Everyone else who has thus far rated this album has been correct: it truly is worthy of the perfect 100 score.
Varg Vikernes, one of the most infamous names in the black metal scene, headed the one-man-band Burzum. With this release, the combination of his first full length release and the EP that followed it, he showed the scene (and the metal world) his style of raw, purely evil black metal on a much grander scale than when it was released solely through Euronymous' record label.
Absolutely everything on this album is wonderful: the production is one of the big noticable things. It isn't garage-quality, like most other "kvlt" black metal releases. Instead, it actually sounds like this was recorded in a studio with a good crew working to produce it.
As for the actual music, it's 100% black metal gold. "Feeble Screams from Forests Unknown" is our first taste of it. The crashing black metal drums, eerily distorted guitars and ear-piercing shrieks from Varg all combine together into a truly epic black metal track. And that is just the first song. It picks up again with "Ea, Lord of the Depths" and this is one of the first songs I heard with the traditional "black metal picking". The drumming is also very nicely done; it isn't all blastbeats and random bashing, unlike some black metal bands approaches. "Spell of Destruction" keeps up the black metal and holds the grimness of this album in balance.
And then "Channelling the Power of Souls into a New God" comes on. This shows Varg's taste for an ambient sound, as we would later hear on Daudi Baldrs and Hlidskjalf. It's nice, but is very slow; it's a very atmospheric "break" in the album. Filler, almost, but it fits very well.
Things pick right back up with the remanining tracks. Highlights are "War", "My Journey to the Stars", and "A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit", but that's not to say the rest aren't amazing as well. You would do very well to pick this album up; it's a piece of black metal history, and an amazing listen as well. -I-
