Bitchcraft - Bitchcraft

A shame this was their only release - 79%

PorcupineOfDoom, October 17th, 2014

By clicking on the random band button, I somehow ended up writing this review. The name of the band just kind of stuck out, and even if they'd only released one demo I felt the need to find it (after all, a bit of thrash never did any harm). And so I set off on my epic quest across the farthest reaches of the internet, in search of a copy of their one and only demo release. It took a while, but I found it eventually. After much pain in trying to get it to work, eventually it did.

The very first thing you notice is that the production on this demo is very poor. The sound quality is very low and nowhere near the crisp sound that you'd want it to be. The vocals are slightly drowned out by the guitar, but from what I can make out they aren't too strong anyway. Despite the poor quality though the music isn't too bad, the riffs solid, the drums also pretty good.

The first song, 'Bed 13' (bit of a random name, but oh well), is easy to get into and is quite memorable, even if the musical work isn't the greatest you'll ever hear. Even if it's not very complex, it is actually surprisingly memorable. I can't really make out what's going on in the lyrical department as the vocals are blown away by the guitar, but they're the one part that isn't too enjoyable. The guitar solo is also enjoyable, even if it's not quite on Dave Mustaine's level.

The other song, 'Psych War', is quite different. The guitar seems a bit all over the place and the song just generally isn't as enjoyable as 'Bed 13'. The solo is once again pretty good, but everything else seems to leave a lot to be desired. The bass is audible here when the other instruments aren't playing, and it is actually quite good. It's quite sad that it isn't heard more often, but that's generally what happens with the bass. Despite not enjoying it as much as the other song, it does feel like this one ends a little early. It doesn't feel like it's three and a half minutes long, more like a minute less than that.

And that's it. Everything that Bitchcraft ever released, summed up in a few paragraphs. Let's be honest here, they weren't the most musically gifted people that ever walked the face of the Earth, but the band should have lasted longer than they did. I certainly would have listened to a full-length album by them.
