I feel like traditional doom metal is scarce these days. Most bands are combining doom with another subgenre of metal, altering the backbone of the music and experimenting with different kinds of sounds, for better or for worse. Following the paradigm set by Pentagram, Candlemass, and Black Sabbath, Bells of Doom plays a no nonsense brand of doom metal that's absolutely plodding and heavy, perfect for those creepy nights alone as you contemplate music suitable for the mood. The one man project's only release, The Death of God, was unleashed in 2001, but much to my dismay, quickly folded with no signs of resurfacing with future work. In spite of that, Bells of Doom's demo gives us a positively epic three tracks of traditional doom metal that pays wonderful homage to the epitome of the subgenre.
The Death of God offers little you haven't heard before if you've ever looked into any doom metal. One part slow tempos, another part ominous guitar riffs, the next clean, yet low-placed vocals--that's Bells of Doom in a nutshell. Multifaceted, but never too complicated, Nicklas Rudolfsson plays every instrument on the demo. Normally I would hail this as some kind of feat, but the bulk of the instrumentals aren't elaborate enough and are relatively simple, the way doom metal should be if it wants to stay within the accepted scope of the subgenre. Abstract doom metal runs the risk of morphing into another type of metal, or at the very least, fusing with something completely different and becoming one of the contemporary bands that sidesteps the acknowledged boundaries of the music. Thankfully, Bells of Doom goes nowhere near that territory and sticks to strong, heavy riffs archetypal of subgenre, with tempos slowed to a dead halt that doom metal freaks expect from the music.
There's not much to dislike on The Death of God if you're a doom head, but if you come from a background of various types of metal, you might hope for colorful guitar solos or an enthusiastic vocal performance. Quite frankly, both are pedestrian, even by doom metal standards and could have used a nudge in the right direction concerning a passionate showing. Nonetheless, when push comes to shove, they get the job done adequately. And really, complaints aren't going to get us anywhere because Bells of Doom has been dead for years now. There is no successor to this demo. It was a speck on everyone's radar when it was released. Still is.
Clocking in at a measly 17.9 minutes, The Death of God leaves you wanting more. But you're not going to get more. Rudolfsson has moved on, presumably to bigger and better things, truly a loss if you ask me because his project had a ridiculous amount of potential. I often catch myself thinking about what a full-length would be like or what an enhanced production would do for the music's longevity. Those and other factors would improve the already excellent formula Bells of Doom showed us with The Death of God, but, at this point, it would take a world catastrophe to shake it out of Europe's obscure metal culture. Or, you know, a stroke of luck. I sincerely hope Rudolfsson will rekindle his love for the project and rejoin the blueprint Pentagram and others laid out so many years ago.

Doom metal is one of the most unknown forms of metal but it is probably the most diverse. There is doom that can be found for every mood and occasion. Originally doom was filled with mostly Sabbath worshiping bands but it diversified very quickly and even the original clean vocal styles, that bands like Sabbath and Pentagram did so well, became less common. Today we have some bands that are remembering past influences very well and modernizing the music to create something a little new. This formula has created the triumph that is Bells of Doom.
It’s a pity this 18 minute demo is all this project produced because it’s a fantastic slab of doom even though Nicklas Rudolfsson is still a member of other great acts like The Funeral Orchestra and Runemagick. This album contains fairly low clean vocals that work well. Taking after Johan Langquist, the original Candlemass vocalist, the vocals show an appreciation for depth that very well enhances doomed vocals. It’s very tempting to compare this band to Candlemass because both bands do very well at creating doomed emotions, although they are musically fairly different, but that same epic feeling is produced.
Like any respectable trad doom there are strong riffs that keep the work interesting throughout. It’s crazy how Nicklas did everything himself on this album with the guitar work being sold and drumming as well. Some simple to more complex guitar solos add a lot to the music and you will never be bored here like some other doom bands that are more difficult to get into. Still, as accessible as this album is it’s more slow, extreme and heavy than most trad doom out there. The intro to Funeral of the Wizard is worth mentioning because it has this folk tinge to it because an acoustic is used and sounds very interesting.
For anyone into funeral doom of trad doom I highly recommend this album because it goes back and creates extremely epic trad doom with references to the old bands without being just another Sabbath rip-off. Doom on…
