Dejection, Unclean

Because of Asbestosdeath, we have the VERY awesome stoner band Sleep. It's crazy, a band of pure nihilism and evil of the most vile order would later evolve into the band best known for defining stoner doom metal. HOW DOES THAT WORK?

Well, this band features Al Cisneros, Matt Pike, and Chris Hakius, later to become Sleep. This was their first real release (their earlier EP releases are extremely obscure and possibly lost forever) and I'm impressed. As dark and misanthropic as it is, it's still doom metal and it's got such a strong sense of Sabbath worship. The four tracks on this compilation, excellently done by Southern Lord Records, features their complete discography. It may be brutal stuff, but Southern Lord does a good job. Worth the purchase if you're into Sleep's history. Or just want something sick and twisted to listen to. Either way, it's a good time. Best track: 'Nail.' It has an excellent intro.
