And love will steer the stars! - 85%

This is pretty solid stuff and I'll be surprised if their next release is another independent one. I can't really pinpoint exactly what makes this really good; it's just solid, heavy meat and potatoes doom that grows and grows on you.

Yeah, a real simple formula here; riffs borrow mostly from Sabbath, (fortunately, unlike most Sab disciples some of the stuff here also moves at a somewhat decent tempo), a bit of newer Candlemass and perhaps even some My Dying Bride? Perhaps it's just me but I definitely hear a lot of MDB in the way the vocals and guitars interact, and perhaps in the dude's slightly-whiny-but-effective english (no idea where the accent is from) vocalising. Nothing here is remotely complicated and whilst a few parts could've used a bit more complexity- that faster riff in Unto the Hour of the Dead could sure as hell be a bit more interesting- things still work really well.

Repeating myself here but yeah, there's not much to this- no real leads short of some harmony work, short of the occaisonal "YEAH" the vocalist stays within the same range the whole time, no clean bits, no progressive ideas- and while this might get boring if it was a 70 minute long full length, as an EP it works marvellously. A thick, gothic atmosphere (complemented with solid lyrical work), big riffs that get you headbanging and occaisonally lapse into a more relaxing, stoner-ish plod.

This isn't rocket science. It is a very good debut though. Hardly life changing but simple and effective, and I'm keen on seeing what they'll come up with next.
