| Several words come to mind when you listen to Iron Youth. One might be "THRASH!". Others might be "Holy shit". Let me just tell you that anything along those lines are very appropriate. Most bands with an NS theme generally are either folk bands, harcore/punk crossbreeds or some weak variation of the two. Not Iron Youth. These guys hit you with some straight-up death/thrash and will leave you wanting more. The first song on here, the title track "Respect/Defend/Create", is a prime example of this. Very thrashy riffs, some reminescent of thrash greats such as Slayer or even the famed Dark Angel, dominate the track, backed by the typical thrash drumming, wavering thrash bass, but with more death metal vocals than thrash vocals. The vocals are deep, even gruff, and screamed when they need to be. For the most part, though, they're shouted, or seemingly spoken in that deep manner. It gets the job done, though. The title track does well to set the feeling for the rest of the album. "Alone" and "Modern Man" are more great examples of thrash, and "Close Combat" is a great death/thrash hybrid. The guitars are really what shine on here, alternating between fierce thrash assaults and crushing death grinds. The drumming, while mostly typical-sounding to the thrash genre, is great as well; it's always there to carry the song along. The bass is decent, and as for the vocals, I really must give them credit. They're deep, rough and add a lot of aggression to the songs. While Iron Youth may never be as famous as Slayer, or even as infamous as Dark Angel, they are still a great band that should be checked out. Ignore your political or racial stance and give this album (hell, give this band!) a listen. If you like thrash, you won't be disappointed. |
