| Here we have Nuclear Death's third demo effort by the name of "Vultures Feeding". What becomes immediately obvious once you put this tape in is the improved production over their previous two demos. The sound is very balanced this time, allowing each instrument to get equal representation in the mix. The bass guitar is clearly audible on this recording with a unique, crunchy heaviness to it. Lori's vocals are still in the same aggressive thrash metal style, but she no longer implements those off-the-wall falsettos into her singing. The music itself is basically a continuation of their last tape but with added heaviness. The drummer has improved with his fast-tempo beats, offering a good amount of straight-up grindcore blasting in addition to some powerful double bass. Unlike their full-length efforts, this is still first and foremost thrash, then death metal, then grind; but the element that never changes with Nuclear Death is the pulverizing, all-over-the-place chaos in the music. In terms of that, this demo is even more crazy than the "Welcome to the Minds..." tape. While that one was a disgusting blend of Slayer, Repulsion and Sadistik Exekution, "Vultures Feeding" takes the chaotic factor even further and has more of a Bestial Warlust vibe to it. There's much fewer of those mid-paced, chunky thrash riffs on this tape. Instead, what we have is the early stages of highly dissonant guitar reverb that would later resurface in festering slabs on "Bride of Insect" and "Carrion for Worm." The best (and shortest) song on the demo is probably the title track. Lori uses some eerie whispering vocal effects towards the end that are combined with a wall of distortion and blastbeats. The result is a dark pit of anguish from which there is no escape. Another killer release from the nuclear wasteland. |
