The only album with Tommy Bolin and the MK IV, brought in as replacement for Ritchie Blackmore (who had left for Rainbow). Deep Purple split for the first time following this release, and Bolin died of drug use the following year.

According to Glenn Hughes, the album's title was Tommy Bolin's idea. Tommy while drinking he said phrases like "come taste the wine" and "come hear the band", he mixed both phrases and thus the title emerged.

"Lady Luck" is a song brought by Tommy Bolin from his previous band called Energy, which was composed by its vocalist Jeff Cook. Cook gave Bolin permission to use his song (although according to Bolin, he only remembered several parts), but Bolin didn't remember the lyrics well, so David Coverdale made new lyrics for him.

According to Jon Lord, the title "Owed to 'G'" is a pun. The "owed to" would be "ode to" and the "G" is for the musician George Gershwin. So the title would be interpreted as "Ode to Gershwin".

"You Keep On Moving" was originally written for the album "Burn" (1974), but was rejected by Ritchie Blackmore.
