Def Jam Recordings was founded by Rick Rubin in 1984. The label focuses mostly on rap and hip hop, but the thrash metal band Slayer was signed to it, releasing Reign in Blood and South of Heaven on the label before Rubin left, taking Slayer with him to form Def American, which later changed names to American Recordings.
