Description

Record label founded by Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn in 1978. Primarily known as a punk rock and alternative label, some of its best known artists include Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, the Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr, Bad Brains, and Soundgarden. By the mid '80s, the label began issuing acts that didn't conform to its punk reputation, including bands like doom metallers Saint Vitus, psychadelic rocks Opal, and reggae act HR, just to name a few. In the late '80s and early '90s the label ventured into jazz. In 1997, the label entered a period of dormancy, brought on by distributor problems and a declining reputation, the latter the result of the label's eclectic catalog (featuring many releases of questionable quality), reports of royalty disputes (which would result in the loss of the back catalogs of Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets, and Dinosaur Jr), and lawsuits it brought against one of its artists, Negativland. Today, the label still exists primarily to service what remains of its back catalog and to issue new releases by Ginn's numerous projects.

Trivia

Greg Ginn initially launch SST in the mid '70s as an electronics company focused on ham radio (SST stands for "Solid State Tuners"). Ham radio was Ginn's first passion and he holds patents on some related innovations he devised. SST employeed many people who were part of the early Black Flag/SST circle. The electronics were shelved when the label took priority. The label used PO Box 1 in Lawndale, CA, for numerous years despite numerous moves for the physical offices. Ginn's initial partner in the label was Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski. By 1983, label manager Joe Carducci and Black Flag roadie-turned-label accountant Steve "Mugger" Corbin were also partners, although by 1990 Ginn was the only sole owner of SST (Dukowski remained on as "Head of Sales" until 1997). In 2006, Ginn and SST relocated to Taylor, Texas.
