For the bands that have changed their genre over the years, could we put the genre next to the album?

for exaple:

Promo Demo '93 Demo, 1993 [1 review, 99%] (Melodeath)
Lunar Strain Full-length, 1994 [7 reviews, average 87%] (Melodeath)
Subterranean EP, 1994 [5 reviews, average 93%] (Melodeath)
The Jester Race Full-length, 1996 [8 reviews, average 78%] (Melodeath)
Live & Plugged Video/VHS, 1997 (Melodeath)
Black Ash Inheritance EP, 1997 [2 reviews, average 89%] (Melodeath)
Whoracle Full-length, 1997 [11 reviews, average 68%] (nu Metal)
Colony Full-length, 1999 [13 reviews, average 86%] (Melodeath)
Clayman Full-length, 2000 [11 reviews, average 65%] (nu metal)
The Tokyo Showdown Live album, 2001 [5 reviews, average 63%] (nu Metal)

Sorry, I don't know much about in Flames.... but what do you think of this suggestion?

Only if the genre is accurate.

In Flames hasn't released a single nu-metal album.

Whoracle, Clayman, and Tokyo Showdown are still melodic death metal. Heck, Whoracle is pretty much the same sound as The Jester Race. Clayman carries over the sound from Colony, the small alternative influence is seen as the start of In Flames' decline.

Reroute to Remain is Melodic Death metal / Alternative Metal

STYE is Alternative Metal

and Come Clarity is Melodeath / Alternative Metal.

Who knows where they'll go.

While Alt. Metal is somewhat related to nu-metal, there's quite a difference.

I do think it is a good idea though, but maybe not right next to the album name on the front page. Instead have a Genre fill in for every release, to give folks a good idea of what the sound was like back then.

An example is Moonspell's Anno Satanae vs. Wolfheart vs. Sin Pecado vs. Darkness and Hope vs. Memorial.

Anno Satanae is folk black, as is Wolfheart. Sin Pecado is industrial gothic metal, Darkness is Gothic Doom and Memorial is Gothic/Black.

Or how about Therion?

Of Darkness is death metal, Beyond Sanctorum is progressive death metal, Ho Drakon Ho Megas is melodic death metal, Lepaca Kliffoth is symphonic power/thrash metal, Theli, Vovin, Deggial, and Secret of the Runes is symphonic/operatic metal. Sirius B, Lemuria and Gothic Kabbalah is progressive symphonic/operatic metal.

Or Metallica?

Ride the Lightning - Thrash Metal

St. Anger - Suck Metal.

The post directly above this one is an example of why this probably isn't the most workable of ideas.

Exactly, as alot of albums will be labelled according to opinion.

What if someone jumps on the gun and labels St. Anger "Suck Metal" as I suggested?

And surely, someone might put Nu-metal or Crap on Soilwork's later albums.

I'm not even going to mention Hellyeah...

Though it is quite a nice idea in theory the logic is crazily stupid. People will be changing the genre to suit their own opinion every day. Prime example is Metallica and St. Anger.

If you honestly think that people will be mature enough to follow the rules then it could be a nice addition. If you think it is absolutely necessary for the site then maybe it could be locked and only people over 500 points can edit it or 1000... whatever.

Ehhh...

How would giving albums a genre be any different than how the genre of a whole band is decided? Just make it so only mods could change it.

An interesting idea, but practically impossible to work with.

Just too complicated.

If this idea is implemented, you better be prepared to be subjected to some of the worst labeling ever. Not to mention some problematic conflicts that may arise with bands like Alcest (black metal, not black metal, black metal, not black metal).

A genre addition only to albums that are not metal would be a good idea and it should not raise any controversy. For exable a tag next to exploited's punk albums or burzum's ambient ones.

Suck Metal would be a proper label for those kind of albums. :)

The easiest way is just to put it in the genre box like it happens with some bands right now. Example: Thrash metal up to .... , Groove Metal from ... to .... etc.

I could see a crapload of people arguing what genres the CD's were. The Suggestions and Complaints board would be soooo active if this suggestion were followed. But it is a good idea.
