i know that this would be a tremendous pain in the ass for administraters to do, and has no chance in hell of happening, but what do you guys think of metal archives being a wiki?

i personally think this would be a good, if not at least interesting idea. because metal archives is already open source, but if it were a wiki, bands/albums/songs, could be categorized by more than just genre and country. you could have language, region, city, ect. and even other lesser important, but pratical none-the-less information, like pages on festivals, history on genre's and catgeories of bands based on what festivals they've played at.

but yah, like i said, not going to happen. still, discuss...

It'd be one hell of a change, it would be harder to organize but I think it would be for the better in the end (if its even worth all of the trouble)

I like the idea of it, but I can't really see it working. First off, everyone would argue about genre definitions (which can be really ambigious) and it'd be a real pain to moderate.

As for festivals and the like, that would be cool, but also real hard to do. WHy not just google the festival to find out info about it?

Our engine is optimal for the kind of info we keep. Why change it to a generic, all-purpose format?

Not to mention the fact that MA can't hardly function as is for a few months without imploding for a week or better. I can only imagine how bad it would suck if it had to handle the level of information an open wiki would have.

I don't think a Metal Archives wiki is necessary. However, I DO think that a wiki specifically for metal music would be awesome, and it's something I'd love to do one day.

I like MA the way it is now.

As a side note, the MA page on Wikipedia is rather amusing. Like reading an analysis of oneself.

A metal wiki would be most Krieg. The problem is all of the goddamn mallcore dickwads would be posting their little "OMG GOD FORBID IZ THE MOST PROGGRESIV bAND EvER!!!!!111!!" And since it would be a wiki there would be very ability to curb this sort of thing, since sadly it seems the trendcore kids outnumber the true metalheads. Wikipedia is able to maintain quality control (for the most part) due to massive traffic, but a metal wiki might not have high enough traffic to do that.

Nonetheless if it could be pulled off, I would love a metal wiki. One of the biggest problems I have with Metal Archives, while simultaneously recognizing its essentiality, is the limited editing ability of normal users to band information.

Only real advantage I can see a wiki having is the ability to elaborate on bands, such as include an extensive band history that is more organized, or if people wish they could list the tour dates. It would also be more flexible (band members can have their own pages, but isn't that gonna be in 2.0 anyway?), but because its more flexible, its easier for people to fuck up and be vandalized.

i've been reading all your guys' replies and saw this list on wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wiki_farms

maybe on one of the free ones, someone should start one, just as an experiment. i'm not so technically inclined as to be able to do something like that, or else i would.
