No it doesnt. This guy watched Melissa Cross' Zen of Screaming and wrote down a couple of the excercises she suggests on that DVD. And like I said before, it wont teach you how to growl. The heat/fire thing is for when you sing in your clean voice, it's basically rasp but she called it heat/fire to be original.
Although you should watch Zen of Screaming if you can. Her breathing, pitch and warmup advices help quite a bit, but if you're looking on how to growl, dont get too dissappointed if you watch the whole hour of this DVD and still cant growl like shit. As I said before, it's more of a video for those who know how to do it and wanna get better.

I've came up with a method how to find your "inner growl"... I think. Try to speak normally, and feel your throat with your hand. Feel how the vibrations is all over it? When you growl it should be mostly in the upper part of your throat. Between your jaw and your Adam's Apple (if you have one, and if not, then imagine you do). Just try different stuff untill you get it, and after that it's all a matter of shape of your mouth, ammount of air, etc.

Oh, and one last thing - I keep seeing all these "it's all in your diaphragm, just push air with it...", these people are full of shit basically. The Diaphragm is not a muscle you can control. You use it unwillingly (sp?). But there's a way to recognize how/when you use your diaphragm. Close your mouth. Put your fingers on your lips. Hum something. Feel a vibration? Now try to make a stronger vibration... If it gets stronger then your diaphragm is working. Now you just need figure out what you did that made the diaphragm work, and you can use it when you sing/growl.

Well, I once did vocals in front of an audience at a battle of the bands..I made stuff up on the spot..and yet we got 2nd place. The thing that keept me going was the fact thatI tried to get into the music as much as possible. Don't worry about trying to act "brootal" , you'll get an adrenalin rush that should aid you...good luck.

Been practicing growls for death and black, but since a while I've been busy trying to come up with grunts yourself.

Not much really, I can mechanize my grunt without vocoders, I can do a "dinosaur", and some weird stuff... also have I been practicing burp-vocals, like in porn/cybergrind, and Demilich.

...anyone tried this too, and got some tricks how to, because these tend to go wrong fast...

its hard to talk about all these diferent types of vocals because people dont use the same names. im pretty sure the "burp" vocals your talking about are called pigs. iv herd pigs used alot when talking about gore/porn/cybergrind vox.

I can do screams(like black dahlia murder), low growls(like black dahlia), high growls (wich sound like a demonic scream if done rite like black market fetus), low pigs(sounds like alot of porn/gore/cybergrind vocals like holocausto cannible), high pigs(more used in cybergrind bands like wecamewithbrokenteeth), and i can also do that heat and fire shit or watever its called(a bunch of screamo bands do it in a chorus ad backup vox).
I taught myself to do all of these but its weird because i didnt figure out how to do the pigs until recently. but the concept was will me for years because when i was younger in elementary i would talk while inhaling and it would make this weird sound and i pretended i was an alien and i tryed that now and i just changed the shpe of my mouth and i got the pigs sound.

how do you do the "high growls"? Another name for this might be "banshee scream". I mean the really high, thin, undecipherable spooky scream like if you took Ihsahn's vocals on early Emperor albums and get it a little bit higher pitch. Or maybe the 'slave' screams on Wormphlegm songs... if you know what I mean.

I'm having a bit of a trouble getting more "conventional" growls... I can do a black metal scream, a really low undecipherable growl ("pig vocals" if you wish) but like nothing in between. I cant the the "traditional" death metal growl or the higher melodic death growls... it annoys the shit out of me. I basically joined a Progressive Death Metal band and they really liked my vocals (I play bass, but they also need a vocalist so I said what the heck..), but they said the lower growls are too undecipherable, and the high ones are too BM, so I thought I'll just do something in the middle, like Oprhaned Land or My Dying Bride or Opeth growls, but I keep getting my throat really dry and I choke up after a few lines... annoyance!

im not quit sure what you mean for the emperor banshee scream but i think you just scream like a girl and if your voice has matured it wont be a steady sound just change youe tone and you should find a spot that will sound like it. and for the growl i used to have people say that its too hard to understand and flat. my problem was that i would keep and steady growl and say things but to get it to sound good and understandable you have to acctually move your lips like you would when you talk and growl at the same time.

I have a big range of vox screams.. but I'm also a singer to.. I try to avoid metalcore/hardcore screaming because it hurts my voice and damages it, and that will 100% ruin my chance of ever having a good, clean voice...

People in my town say I can scream and growl real good, even if I'm only 15 years old.
Anyway, I just wanted to point out some clues I found myself about screaming, since growling has already been cleared.

There are some ways of doing screams and each of them gets different results, I'm gonna say some of the ones I found on myself:

1.I'm not going to say to use the fucking diaphragm as I don't even know what it is. The first time a got a good scream was this way: I hardened my stomach (or entire belly, let's say) and let the air go out as I was singing, ALL the air, with strength, very much like whispering. Depending on how much you close or open your throat, you can get a more thorn or more later-Dimmu-Borgir-like vocals. This "technique" gets good results, but it's hard to sing very loud this way.

Obs: I have to warn that this method requires a lot of effort from your throat and it can hurt in the beggining, and it hurt really bad on me in my first times, it doesn't hurt anymore but I wouldn't advice using this very often as it can probably damage your throat.

2.This one I discovered later after paying more attention to vocals of bands like Norther or Children Of Bodom. This technique can get a real loud volume and it's not very hard to do. The screams, however, are not as good as the one above. You can accomplish it just like this: first scream something in a clean tone, then, do it again, but this time, let ALL the air pass by your entire respiratory system, if you did right, it'll come much like Norther or earlier Children Of Bodoms, vocals, very thorn, but you can choose if you want to do a highpitched scream, like Dani Filth, or a more harsh version of your normal voice tone, as you close or open your throat.

I found useful to use both these ones, as the first was more used when recording and the other one for playing live because I play guitar and sing, so I can't concentrate everything on the vocals.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

I'm doing keys/vox for my viking metal band. I'm doing a mixture of screams and low clean sung 'epic' vocals, though I mostly scream.

I've got the low, gutteral growls and the mid-ranged barks going on (I kinda sound like Vintersorg, or sometimes the mid-range vocals of Jari from Ensiferum/Wintersun), but I'm having some real trouble reaching that black metal scream, like Windir, Emperor, Ulver and the like. Keep in mind that I'm 17, and I'm pretty sure that my voice isn't fully developed, if that has anything to do with being able to do high-pitched screams. Any tips? For my screams/growls, I use the technique of humming, then pushing out the air until I get a scream, which I can do pretty well. How can I make it go higher, without going into some stupid-sounding falsetto scream/singing thing?

My vox for my band DarkWing are a mix of Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, and Lemmy Kilmister. My biggest influences when it comes to vocals.

i sing in my prog/avantgarde black metal band

the only band i can compare the sound with is borknagars new stuff,
i do very low clean vocals, like bal-sagoths storytelling voice
and i can to short "pig" bursts

my strongest sound it a really raspy, almost painful sounding growl like early satyricon

i am quite proud of my voice and im pretty good on stage

i also do guitars and computer work for recording, ive set up a professional recording studio in my garage, with lots of shiny expensive things that have flashing lights on them...

the band is called "Death of a blackened sun"
average song lenths are 6 minutes but they dont get boring
we have 2 demos circulating (about 500 copies i made with a cd duplicator)

i have almost finished our website, il keep you all updated if anyone is interested

You guys don't have myspace?By your descriptions,it sounds interesting.

I'm the vocalist of a band called through darkness,we play epic/extreme melo-death.we sound,in my opinion, quite unique.our songs have complex structures and great variety and we're currently composing the songs for our first demo,to be released in the beginning of 2007.
i can do both guttural death growls and mid-range screams.
if anyone's interested,we have some songs on myspace

i've been trying to start a death metal band here in new jersey for years, but it just hasnt happened yet (if your interested in starting something in my area, email me or something..)

anyway, if you want to hear the recordings i can email the clips to you. i pretty much just would like to get some feedback from other people, good or bad.

Hey there, I've been growling since around the age of 16 and singing since 18 (I'm 19 now), I do vocals for a prog death/dark power metal band.
www.myspace.com/bardikragnarok

Demo is ancient and mega rushed, but you get the idea.

(Yes there is good metal in Scotland)

@SoManyDeeds:
Ok, I finnay got around to replying. I listened to it and it sound like you definitly have some experience. The lows are a little low on volume (which is mostly always the case) but still sound good, the high pitched sound good , but can you do that for a while or does it start to get irritated? If not then thats great, otherwise I would say try fining a way of maintaining the rasp but not using as much of your throat. Its not like you were using it for a song, I know, but I would recommend finding a way to get your lows and highs in the same volume proximity, just move closer to the mic on the lows and a bit further back on the highs. Like I may have said I don't have much experience, but I figured I'd try give some advice. Good luck , sounds great. Practice is definitly a factor in progression.

I can do bm vocals, I'm generally better at the high-pitched ones, I used to be able to do what I call false screaming which was really more like whispering but sounded like a scream when you recorded it, now I'm not so good at that, but I'm a alot better at lowder vocals, I've recorded myself a few times and I think I sound pretty good. I find it alot easier to scream when I play bass at the same time or I'm screaming to a cd, I think that's mainly because the walls are a bit thin and I don't want the neighbours to think I'm dying. Like I said before I'm better at high-pitched vocals but now I think I'm getting the hang of the low growl and I'd like to scream in a band if I could find one.

im looking to do some vocal lessons soon (just a matter of finding a decent teacher) but i practice my singing by humming/singing the notes i play on guitar. Ive noticed ive got a very low range voice and can get a pretty mean growl and death grunt (even though thats not what i necessarily want to do) but how could i get train my voice to a high(er) range for singing in power/speed metal style? plus does anyone have any tips on how to not damage your voice with harsh vocals?

Problem is you wont get a chance to mix honey with water or whatever during show. The sore throat thing is just your throat getting used to the act.. Doing the honey water thing just extends the time it'll still be sore. I used to have it, and I used nothing, and now I can sing for like two hours straight without any pain.

Yes but you can mix the honey into a water bottle and keep it handy. Besides I meant for practicing to get used to it. Exactly as you said.

Ok so, um... this may sound weird.. but I was screaming to emperors "Into the infinity of thoughts", and I got REALLY dizzy and fell to the ground...

I hit my head against something (I dont know what it was) while falling, so it wasn't just like me being extremely tired...

But, is there a way I can stop this from happening ever again? I've never had it happen, but I'm having a gig coming up soon and I cant have this happen on stage haha.

Hyperventiliation. You were expending too much oxygen. You have to pace yourself; if you go full-bore on all your vocals you'll just end up exhausting yourself and/or passing out like this time. Take it back a notch.

Same here. I, and the vocalist for our band can do these types of vocals, except he exhales and uses his throat, which I know now isn't good for it, whereas I do this deep inhaling sort of thing, (if anyone knows what I mean), but I cannot exhale it at all. Any tips? Also, if anyone knows a good method for Black Metal screeches, I would greatly appreciate it.

www.myspace.com/writtenintorment

is my solo band i do the vocals aswell
on the newest track "mass graves " had dagon from heathen deity backing my stuff up and hes a realy good death metal vocalist.

i simply use my throat to create the raspy sound and use my diaphragm (sp??) to push the sound out.

For the ultra-gutturals: just shape the throat appropriately, add a little bit of basic vocal tone (you know, just like you're speaking) and cut it so it makes that 'gravelly' sound. You know that groan you make when you wake up too early in the morning? Just do that and shape the mouth and throat so that the sound is extremely low. :D Just remember that no, it can't be loud. That's why you have a mike.

Another note: pig squeals, which I just figured out how to do a couple days ago. Essentially, you're doing what you do with the traditional ultra-gutturals, but you're closing the throat more (making you have to force the air out harder to get the 'squeal') and tensing your diaphragm to get the intensity to it. Unlike the Devourment-style vocals, these have power to them and can be done with some volume, though not a lot unless you want to obliterate your vocal chords.

As for BM vocals, I still know dick-all about those. I can do some weird Catasexual Urge Motivation-style snarls and screeches, but nothing like you'd hear from a typical BM artist. the_empyreal_lexicon would be the best person to ask about this.

I can growl reasonably well. The thing i'm wondering though, to me it sounds pretty darned good, I can do anything from a reletively deepish death growl up to higher shrieks/screams (I think i'm good at doing the vocals Nergal did on Behemoth's Sventevith (Storming Near The Baltic) as well as And The Forests Dream Eternally) but when I recorded it on my MP3 player (an iRiver H10 if that helps) it sounded really gay. Should I listen to with my ears (and a friend who thought it was pretty good) or to the MP3 player?

i've never tried inhaled vocals. i'll give it a shot sometime.

i actually just taught myself how to do harsh vocals over the last month or so. i'm not in a band or anything, but i spend a lot of time headbanging in my car, and i decided that i might as well learn to sing along properly to nile and recent behemoth. so i just started trying to howl along to it while driving or stuck in traffic, and it only took the last month or 2 to get used to it. i just would scream/growl along, and if it hurt, i stopped. if it didn't, kept going. simple.

i mainly listen to death metal lately, but i listen to most any kind of music, and i think that practicing lower, gutteral tones also improve the higher pitched stuff. i never could sing along to anthrax because my voice hits the roof at some point (unless i grab my balls), but now i seem able to do that, and it's not too hard to alternate between the gutteral tones and the high-pitched clean vocals.

i think iv posted here about these earlier but iv always know how to do them since i was a little kid because i would talk while inhaling air being stupid with my friends and then when i got inot metal i tryed the inhaling vox and all i had to do was make an O with my mouth and close my throat. so just to get the idea talk outloud but suck in air while to talk (dont suck air in like your gasping for breath or anything just breath in normally and talk) but all you have to do from there is make an O with your mouth (the O like when your doing deep growls) and inhale. if you want a pig sound just say oink (obviously) and keep that O shape. say oink over (your lips should be going up and down cuz you have to keep the O shape) and over doing it and you should be doing some pigs. and alot of bands(cattle decap, wecamewithbrokenteeth, etc.) also do that tone shift thing where the sound goes low to high to low again sounds like there sayin eeeerreeerrr. you do that by just opening your lips some to the sides but dont open your mouth cuz then it sounds funky unless of course that what you want. but this is a good techniq and is much safer for you vocal chords than growls and screams. as far as i know there not bad at all i have never had pain from inhale vocals exept for 1 time when i was inhaling way too much like gasping air in to see what it would sound like. that acctually hurts so just make sure you dont gasp and it should be cool.

finntroll's first vocalist, Jämsen, had to quit the band a while ago because of a viral-based tumor in his vocal chords which could not be removed surgically. i've also heard of other various musicians ending up with such things like blood-blisters which have to be removed surgically.

i practice my harsh vocals in fear of this. my throat gets raw soon after starting death vocals (even in the shower where the aucoustics and moisture help the singer). how can some people do 2 hr live shows when i can barely do 2 minutes???
can such damage be easily avoided?
