I didn't see anything regarding this topic on this forum; the master behind such film classics as Halloween, Escape From New York, and The Thing is currently on tour promoting his music. It looks awesome. I scored a VIP ticket for the Dallas show.

'The Thing' is one of my favorite movies of all time, such a classic. Also 'Big Trouble In Little China' is so underrated, never get tired of it.

Hasn't made a decent movie in what, 30 years? He's responsible for some classics, sure, but I wish he would stop getting billed as some kind of "master of horror".

That's exactly what he is, though. His legacy will remain regardless of how prolific he is now.

Yeah, Francis Ford Coppola hasn't made a really good movie in decades either. Doesn't mean he's going to stop being called one of the greatest directors of all time.

Think of it the same with someone like Wes Craven. After New Nightmare and up until he died, he made exactly ONE good movie with Red Eye, and a lot of his work prior to that is rather hit-or-miss. Still doesn't change the fact that he made A Nightmare on Elm Street. There's a lot of hot garbage in his filmography, but what is good is REALLY good. John Carpenter may not be any good anymore as a director, and hasn't been for 20 years, but his good stuff is similarly incredible.

Although I'm still trying to decide if Escape from L.A. is worse than Scream. The former might have bastardized a damn near perfect movie in its predecessor, but the latter corrupted the horror genre for years.

I mention it every time I talk about movies. :P

Also, in my opinion The Thing suffers a little from its lead actor, that's what keeps the movie from perfect and instead settles it around a 97-98% score for me. And I only think so long after the fact, because 1980s Kurt Russell being so fucking 80s - like the worst "That 80s Show"-stereotype - takes away a bit from the timelessness the movie should have. Still, what a legend of a movie.

Why is it that some refer to The Thing's soundtrack as synthwave? I never found it such.

It's not even close. Almost no music from the 80s proper is what people are producing nowadays to be called synthwave. Just casuals clinging on to any label they can find to make sense of things, I guess.

Synthwave the genre is intentionally revivalist, isn't it? Whereas Morricone, for example, would be the OG sound they're reviving.

Less so on those two I would imagine. John Carpenter is actually one of the biggest influences on the genre. There's a more deliberate, regular rhythm percussion and basslines which Morricone and Vangelis did so much less frequently. Carpenter might have a few tracks here and there with his new albums that sound appropriate for the revivalist genre but his actual score work from the 80s which influenced it have less in common. Jan Hammer and Paul Hertzog are another two big influences.

Makes sense. I was just thinking great synth soundtrack composers rather than them being on a synthwave ticket explicitly. If synthwave is exclusively a revivalist genre made recently, neither would be included regardless. It's not a genre I'm very familiar with, which is why the synthwave thread is choice.

Synthwave is basically taking 80s electronic synth scores, the dance-pop genres at the time that were big, and the general synthesizer and sampler technologies that were available during that period, and making a sort of amalgam with all of that that feels very influenced by the 80s synth music but still made with a modern listener in mind. There's a spectrum of course, artists like Mitch Murder are *very* retro sounding and use legit old analog gear to achieve an actual sound that you'd hear in the 80s, and there are others that incorporate more modern sounds and compositional methods that you wouldn't hear.

Carpenter and Harry Manfredini are the masters of the slasher movie score.

A clear summary. Yeah, it's cool stuff. I've only heard the more groovy side of it (if there's another side). From your description it sound like dace-pop is at the core. So, would Morricone's score, say, be too atmospheric a style to qualify? I guess what I mean is, does Morricone not really qualify because of era or sound? .. or both .. ?
