Is anyone else weirdly excited for MA to hit its 100,000th band? Should be in the next couple weeks, and I remember there was a whole lot of press 'round the metal blog-o-sphere when 90k rolled around so this is pretty cool. Is there any way to find out what the "100,000th" band will be or is it arbitrary since bands occasionally get removed?

If submissions were actually consistent, acceptable and complete, clearing the band queue as it sits would put us over 100k.

100,000 bands! YEAH! And all of maybe 2000 of them are worth hearing (if you're generous). Hyuk hyuk.

I noticed it was at 99,500 not long ago. I can't believe there has been so many metal bands. It's insane, but I'm not complaining.

Can't wait to reach 1,000,000 bands. ;)

And how many of them are just side projects of some random guy in his basement that have only released one demo that only his mom knows about?

I'll be sending in a submission really soon once my bands album gets released... thatd be so rad to be 100,000 :D

Technically it's arbitrary and based on whichever way the capricious winds of band rejection, approval and deletion blow, but perhaps a mod will consider what they approve once we've reached 99,999 so that we have something cool to attach to the 100,000 bands! post on our Facebook page. :P Like with 90,000 bands!, though that was indeed sheer luck, as I recall.

We are now less than 45 bands away. It's very likely we'll reach this number within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Right, this needs a screenshot, some beer, an announcement on the home page, and all kinds of stuff celebrating how many bands metal spans by now.

just as a moderator is about to click, with trembling hands and a shiver, the "approve" button for the 100k band, another will be thinking "wait a minute, do we really want meshuggah on the site?" :D

When I search the archives for bands with "metal" in their genre description I get only 97844 results.

Spoiler: show

Edit: Wait I forgot grindcore exists.

There's also non-metal exceptions, (but) they make up only around 100 entries.

EDIT: Also NWOBHM, deathcore, the four or five "Various" bands and -if you forgot the * at the end- metalcore.

Being an obnoxious cuntface aside, your question made me curious, so I sat and thought about it for a bit. It's probably a relatively small percentage of the overall worthwhile bands worth hearing, just because Japan's metal scene outside of heavy, thrash and maybe prog is a bit whatever. Plus, a lot of the important and landmark metal releases came from Europe and America. You could probably outnumber all my favorite bands from Japan just with the amount of classic heavy metal acts to come out of England and Germany, nevermind their extreme metal scenes.

A little late to the party, but just imagine how many man-hours it took to get M-A to this point. It's mind boggling.

This is fucking awesome, congrats to everyone who made this possible. For me Metal Archives started as a great resource when I was getting into metal, but now, almost a decade since I first checked it out it's an absolutely essential tool, amazing community, and hands down my most frequently visited website. Cheers to all, this is an unbelievable milestone.

Wooo! And to think that 0.002% of the bands up until now were submitted by me... makes me feel all significant and at the same time completely unimportant.

Unreal. :)

While I don't always agree with some of the additions and subtractions to the encyclopaedia, it's the best resource for heavy metal on the Internet. Period.

Onwards to 200,000! If there is even that many....
