The intro to Manowar's Bridge of Death is a pretty well-known case, and if you're excluding early thrash from extreme metal, Slayer's Fight Till Death and Black Magic might be the earliest examples.

Aside from the non-extreme bands influenced by black metal or post-rock (tremolo picking is as much a trademark of post-rock as it is of black metal) like Agalloch, I can only remember it being implemented in guitar solos.

Venom did it way much earlier with songs like Witching Hour and Black Metal. Also Judas Priest could be considered as pioneer with songs like Exciter, dating back to 1977.

It's the last riff of Strid's End of Life, which has also "inspired" Nargaroth on Black Metal ist Krieg.

I'm not sure Exciter counts as trem picking. The main riff is just 16th notes at a moderate tempo. Trem picking blurs the rhythm of the individual strums a bit.

Forefather - Steadfast - Has that intricate, stately atmosphere coupled with a rockish drive the opening riff is what I'm referring to:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uytm9-C-Nl8

Iniquity - Border into shadow - Another 'sound defining' riff for Iniquity: A grimy and sister form of crunchy tech death, the melody is impossible to forget and it starts at 0:34 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoG56iIUkKE

Dodsferd has some pretty damn awesome pissed off riffs like in Hypocrtic Shitfuckers still breathing. Like just look at the title of the song lol.

Also Forteresse's Honneur et Tradition is absolutely amazing. I noticed how that was recommended so I definitely second it.

L'Espirit du Courant by Brume D'Automne is pretty damn crazy too.

Oh and I will lay down my bones among the rocks and roots by Wolves in the Throne Room. Pretty much the whole song is just majesty. The last part is amazing. Prettty much any WITTR song has amazing tremolo riffs

It was used in surf music. The first example of this I ever heard is "Misirlou" by The Surfaris from the early 1960's; and for me, this remains the classic example. This song--probably more than any other--is what got me interested in instrumental hard rock.

Here is a more recent performance:

The Surfaris - Misirlou

Dick Dale is credited with popularizing this old Greek folk song as an electric guitar classic; though I don't think he was as well known in Minnesota, which is where I was at the time. Here is an example of his work:

Miserlou - Dick Dale

The intro riff to Vader's Wings boils the blood, but I love how the Elegy by Impetuous Ritual almost sounds slower than it actually is.

The opening riff on Altar of Plague's 'Neptune is Dead' is my favourite. I can't describe why I like it so much, I just do.

I know I for one want more (properly) tremolo-picked power metal. I feel like I have some, but I can't remember what songs they might have been.

Seconding the dismember and morbid angel riffs on the previous page.

Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned:
Carcass - Heartwork https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaXS4nAx0jU
Amazing intro. Although a bit similar to the dismember - override of the overture riff. When I think of tremolo picked riffs this one comes directly to mind. But that also may be because I always play it with band practice to warm up. :D

I love these two:

The riff that comes approximately 30 seconds in is beautifully chaotic. The first time I listened to it, it got stuck in my head and it's been there ever since. It's an amazing mix of melody, eerie atmosphere and evil in musical form, condensed into one song, I love it.

What I always liked of Dismember was its ability to craft very melodic songs and still sound more death metal than most of the bands of their time, more specifically with this album. Most people would say that Dismember's peak was with Like an Ever Flowing Stream (and of course it's a masterpiece), but in my opinion the band reached its finest hour with Massive Killing Capacity and Death Metal, perfect blends of melody and death metal.

I also agree with the guy that posted "Visions from the Dark Side". I have to think of more examples though, it's something I take time to do.

I'll have to second Burzum's "Jesu's Tod". It just sounds so cold, like I feel my blood freezing! I also love Diabolical Masquerade's "Cloaked By The Moonshine Mist".

I am with Warlust on his Darkthrone and Burzum picks. "Jesus' Tod" especially. Those two riffs are probably among the best Varg ever wrote, and they are so memorable that at times they'll just start "playing" in my head. I love how the song's introduced by having the guitar just play both of them alone before drums and bass come in, and then it's just a very steady rolling double bass through the whole thing while those riffs continue to burrow their way into your ears.

These two immediately spring to mind. I got into Horna a bout a year or so ago, and Vihan Tie may have some of the best black metal tremolo riffing I've ever heard. That main melody is just so addictive and the midpaced section is equally if not more so.

Great topic.

Here is my contribution:

Cryptopsy - Phobophile http://youtu.be/k0x-l-Gzxdg
I'm suprised this one has not been mentioned yet

The Ruins Of Beverast - Ornaments on Malice http://youtu.be/ktdCjOD719w
I recently discover this band with their last album, and that opening riff is killer

Morbid Angel - Praise The Strength https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qd6KRr8 ... 6829#t=133
Another classic of Death metal tremolo

Forgot this one. I love how it takes countless of forms throughout the entire song, without mentiong it's eerie and melodic sound, coupled with Swanö's majestic vocals.

Malevolent Creation - "Pursuit Revised" when Brett sings "I know you feel me when I'm lurking around corners" immediately sprang to mind.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YcSXWDeB0E&t=2m3s

Also Windir's "Journey to the End."

Entombed - Drowned https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDdKIriXirM
Obvious but classic. The verse in Supposed To Rot is nice too.

Bölzer - C.M.E. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZBaEtn ... be&t=1m43s
The riff at 1:43. Part of what makes it great is the way the drum beats change too.

That Malevolent Creation song fucking rules, its a shame that isn't one of their more notable songs. Envenomed as a whole is one of their best albums.
Aside from Horna and Sargeist, I've been into alotta Baptism's early-ish stuff, everything up to Grim Arts is pretty much textbook "how Finnish black metal should sound"
Also this early Nattfog demo has some of the best tremolo riffs I've heard in a long while, if you can get past the super lo-fi production that riff around the 2:00 mark and then at around 3:20 are pretty majestic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXz0Axw9DxE

These 4 songs from these 4 bands are probably some of my favorite melody/tremelo-based riffing in metal in general.

Pantera - The Art of Shredding (the intro before the vocals kick in)

Gorgoroth - Funeral Procession (The whole song is filled with badass/melodic/catchy riffs throughout, honestly)

The Berzerker - Heavily Medicated

Burzum - Ea, Lord of the Depths

Black City - Black Fire has to have one of the catchiest and brilliant tremolo riffs I've heard around 1:20.

I almost forgot how great D666 was, thanks for the thread.

Great thread indeed. So, apart from the obligatory choices of Emperor and Thorn's classic songs for me I would like to contribute some other songs that quickly came to mind:

Deathspell Omega - Jubilate Deo (O Be Joyful in the Lord)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlAeD_LTIxc

Anaal Nathrakh - Blood Eagles Carved on the Backs of Innocents
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSbo-FQRJd8

Satyricon - Storm (Of the Destroyer)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siUzbkrwHG4

Burzum - Belus' Død

The starting riff of Ea, lord of the depths by Burzum is probably my favourite tremolo riff to play.

Windir's Journey to the End pretty much taught me to tremolo pick when I was still learning.

The first song represents a minority of their output. It's from the second CD of Sanojesi Äärelle, which is about forty minutes of material quite similar to that. The second is some of the the grittiest Horna there is, from Sotahuuto. The last is from their first full-length, which could indeed be described as aggressive and tremolo-driven - melodic, but in a hateful way.

Horna's material that can most accurately be described as aggressive tremolo driven (but melodic) is some material from Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne, early full-lengths as well as Hiidentorni demo, and some material on Sanojesi Äärelle. The single most appropriate song for that description would be this, in my opinion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxfxU0tsRNk . It's a cover of Pest(Fin) though.

dude this first album material is fucking BRILLIANT!!! I can't believe I've never checked this stuff out before. This band is so good. Its so catchy.

They're dark, and quite seriously black metal, but its MUSICAL. Its fucking catchy. There are hooks. This is amazing.

I was going to post this one anyway as it was different to the black/death examples here, but here's a pretty neat one from power metal!
http://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q ... Of+Islands Starts at around 0:45.
I also enjoy the little fill at the end of it.

Also on the power metal subject, Adramelch's Zephyrus climaxes on a tremolo-picked part in the last 30 seconds or so of the song, with the guitarists playing a different melody for a "counterpoint" (at least in the At the Gates sense) feel. Probably my favorite tremolo picked section in any song.

EDIT: Oh, and there's a good bit of tremolo picking in some of Running Wild's stuff too. The Phantom Of Black Hand Hill is a good example; some parts almost sound proto-Summoning or something.

Nearly every song off of every At the Gates album before Slaughter of the Soul had amazing tremolo picking riffs. But here are some of my favorites:

The Swarm:
http://youtu.be/XAPTxBHipRI?t=11s
I love how that initial violin harmony evolves into the dual-guitar tremolo picked lead.

Forever Blind:
http://youtu.be/74WOaWHkFxs?t=1m30s
In my opinion, the best song that At the Gates has ever done. That harmony sounds so melancholy and anguished.

Windows:
http://youtu.be/Hmd_5k4kEbI?t=1m23s
Ditto what I said above about the harmony. I wish the new album had more of this stuff.

Beyond At the Gates, let's see, a more unknown band...

Desert Shadows by Garden of Shadows
http://youtu.be/Km5sTKbadCU?t=5m5s
With the keyboards and deep guttural vocals, this is incredibly epic and atmospheric.

Amon Amarth - Amon Amarth

The band usually starts their concerts with a strings version of the song and it sounds like legit classical music.
