This is going to be a much different recommendation thread, because I am not looking for a specific style of artist or genre, but instead classic dvds and vhs tapes that are definitely worth owning. My music library is pretty vast, but my music video library is not nearly as big. I am hoping to remedy that over time. Any noteworthy must have video are what I am looking for, especially if it leads me into finding new artists I'm not familiar with. I'll throw in a list of a few videos that I have, so you can see for yourself, and if a band has a better dvd than the one of theirs that I have, then I am definitely interested in those in particular. Any genre is fine (with the exception of nu-metal or metalcore), like I said, I want quality of the dvd itself to be good, whether it be a spectacular performance, great bonus features, great packaging, great audio, a well done documentary, etc. Just leave a brief explanation if you can discussing what makes the dvd so great. Thanks in advance for any help.

1439 - Hellvetia Fire
Aborted - Aurichular Chronicles (sp)
Alice In Chains - Unplugged
Alice In Chains - Musicbank
Behemoth - Crush, Fukk, Create
Behemoth - Evengelia Heretika
Black Dahlia Murder - Majesty
Black Label Society - Bruised, Boozed, and Broken Boned
Black Sabbath - Never Say Die
Cannibal Corpse - Global Evisceration
Cannibal Corpse - Centuries of Torment (The First 20 Years)
Death - Live In L.A
Decline Of Western Civilization, Part II
Down - Diary of a Mad Band
Dream Theater - Live In Budokan
Dream Theater - 5 Years in a Livetime/Images and Words in Tokyo
Dream Theater - Metrpolis 2000 (Scenes From New York)
Lemmy
Marduk - Funeral Marches and Warsongs
Nine Inch Nails - Closure
Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been
Opeth - Lamentations
Opeth - Live Royal Albert Hall
Opeth - Roundhouse Tapes
Slayer - War At The Warfield
Immortal - The Seventh Date of Blashyrkh
Iron Maiden - Rock In Rio
Judas Priest - Electric Eye
Until the Light Takes Us

Like I said, my collection is kind of shit, and compared to my tastes now, pretty out of date, so I am hoping I can beef it up a little in the next few months.

Ultimate Revenge I & II. I know I had one of those on VHS. I just remember it was a good live vhs with death, forbidden and dark angel on it.

If it is the one I am thinking of, I think Heathen is on it too. if so, that is a pretty good video.

I know that they're not exactly loved around these parts, but Nevermore's The Year of the Voyager DVD is terrific. The band is on fucking fire there, giving a very intense performance and, despite what most people would say, Warrel sounds better than ever there. Also, Rainbow's Live in Munich 1977 is awe-inspiring. The band had their best line-up ever at the time, and the jams that they play are just completely stunning. And when Dio is left alone to improvise behind the mic... Man, my heart stops when that happens. Every. Single. Time. I mean; listen to their version of Mistreated... Sorry Coverdale, but that track's just not yours anymore.

That would be a really awesome addition. I'd like to have more of a thrash collection, definitely.

Yea it is a great dvd, also check out Overkills "Wrecking Everything", fuck come to think of it I have a shit load of dvds, Iced Earth's "Alive in Athens" is a fantastic dvd as well as live album. One of the first I every owned and still love is Anthrax's "Odivnekifesin", it captured that band in their prime. Sodom's "Lords of Depravity 1 & 2" is a great insight and documentry into the band. Windir's one and only dvd is prob my favourite black metal dvd and their last ever concert, loads of extras. Without going into detail you would prob enjoy Tankard, Kreator and Destructions dvds, all well shot with good sound.

I am definitely interested in Windir's. They have been a favorite black metal act of mine for quite a while. How is the concert performance on the Sodom dvd? Quite interested in that as well.

Nocturno Culto's 'The Misanthrope' is a fantastic DVD as well as a thought provoking statement on black metal culture.

Pure Fucking Mayhem is also great.

I want to bump this as it's 4ish years old now and I'd like to get some recommendations for metal DVDs.
I've seen the Rainbow '77; man, that is just classic.
I've got the big Maiden 'Early Yaers' which I love and a couple Priests the best of which I'd say is the British Steel 'Classic Albums; and also the complete BS live from just a couple years back.
Also have Asphyx's 'Live Death Doom' which is just mindblowing, and I'm not a huge DM fan at all.

As an aside I also have the Grave Digger (favorite band) 25 To Live and for some reason it won't play on my new DVD/Bluray. Any idea why or what to do?

While not a fan of Mustaine anymore I've heard some good live stuff from him recently. What's the best DVD to Get; Buenos Aries or another?

I also like the career retrospective type DVDs as well.

Oh, and what about Rush? I think I've seen Beyond The Lighted Stage(sp?) and that was good. What newer live stuff is good?

Thanks in advance!
Eric

PS. Two new favorites are Volbeat and Mastodon; any help?
PPS. would that there was a good Mercyful Fate DVD... ;(

Cradle Of Filth - "Heavy, Left-Handed And Candid", "Peace Through Superior Firepower"
Rammstein - "Live Aus Berlin"
Satyricon - "Roadkill Extravaganza"

I suggest performing a search on YouTube for all your favourite bands, download their live video's and burn your own DVD. Apart from that Marduk has 3 DVD's out with live footage if you like them.

Well if you like Sabbat or black/thrash in any way, the Sabbatical Visionslaught DVD is fantastic. Two live shows from 1994 and 2000, both kick maximum ass. Great sound throughout, camera work is limited, but you can clearly see that the band and the crowds are completely into it.

Cool. Thanks! Sadly none of those bands interest me but I do appreciate the time it took to type that.

Thanks for that. I appreciate your help as well. This is the Japan Sabbat, I assume? I know of them but have not heard much from them. Huge fan of the UK Sabbat (and Skyclad as well.) I should get into Japanese metal, their porn is often top knotch so it stands to reason their metal should be good as well, eh? :).

Really? Recommending google/youtube and d/l'ing shit's the best you can do? Thanks for nothing. Please don't respond to my posts again.
.
What about, say, pre '85 Scorpions or a good Saxon vid? Anybody?
Or what about scene histories? Like NWOBHM or German Metal or Japan metal or whatnot?

Excuse me but a band may own their music but they do not own their live footage and YouTube is full of great and rare material, bootlegs and YouTube is the very best you'll ever get your hands on in most bands case since they never released any material themselves. Is it about your band or adding some plank space?

Nothing to do with pirating IMHO.

Amon Amarth's Wrath of the Norsemen was the inspiration for growing my hair out in high school. They're known for their endurance sets and I think all of the recorded concerts were over an hour long each, this being right before With Oden on our Side came out so their material basically covered their whole discography.
Gorgoroth's infamous Live in Krakow was pretty cool too, crucified naked people covered in blood and goat's heads piled high all around the stage and shit.

Paradise Lost's Draconian Times MMXI is one of my favorite dvds. The performance is just so tight, so powerful...each song sounds as (or even more so) strong as in the album. Nick Holmes delivered every line with passion and energy, what a great live document!

Cliff 'em All is messy as hell, underproduced, dirty...but what the heck! It has some of the best footage of Metallica at their peak, raw as they were. Their performances are full of anger and power, I always play this one while studying or something and I end up headbanging to every song. Also their 89 dvd is fucking amazing, they shredded the stage at Seattle.

There is one Megadeth dvd you should get, That One Night in Buenos Aires (man, I saw Megadeth here in Argentina 2 days ago and I can tell you, here they may be even bigger than in USA, the stadium was falling fucking apart and they played here just a couple of months ago with Sabbath!)

Born in the Basement, a docco made by Rat Skates about Overkill's early years and how they worked their asses off to get noticed. Great material to get some real background on how it was back then!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdrUEWDAjUo

Also for old school thrash...Agent Steel+Overkill+Anthrax Metal Hammer Roadshow, aka US Speed Metal Attack, Bochum 1986

"Live after death" ('85) and "Maiden England" ('88) is where it's at. I'm no big fan of live recordings etc. but these albums and
VHS/DVDs are just pure awesomess! Great setlist, great stage, great shows. Def. must-sees, both of them!

edit: oh, just saw the age of this thread… possibly you know these already by now...

Yes, this is the Japanese Sabbat. Don't be daunted by their discography, just go through the studio albums in order and you'll be busy for a while. :) Plenty of other great metal from Japan too, although these guys are easily my favorite.

Thanks for that. Just finished watching Maiden's Flight 666 (or whatever it's called) and found it quite good. However I still cannot get over Bruce being a pilot. For some reason that just blows my mind. I remember getting Live After Death on vinyl, back in the day, and Maiden England on VHS as well.

I agree with Judas Priest's "Electric Eye". Very comprehensive with all the videos they had made up to that point and a killer set during the "Turbo" tour.

Overkill's "Wrecking Everything" is also killer and I would also recommend Amorphis' "Forging the Land of Thousand Lakes" which is excellent in every regard and was my personal intro the band.

Helstar made "30 Years of Hel" a magnificent show with a set list covering all the eras of the band. Check it out!
