Totally agree. Disfigurement was a pretty kickass recent find.

What are some other "new" US brutal death bands like that, i.e. not mindlessly slammy?

Autopsy, Funebrarum, Hooded Menace... Not extremely similar musically but they all fit your general description, more or less.

There's a lot of recs going on here, so I'm not exactly gonna say I spent very much time on each but, here I go:
I liked Binah a lot.
And the others not exactly what I had in mind. Autopsy and Puteraeon don't seem groovy enough
And the others not "atmospheric" enough. (But I guess that concept varies form person to person?)

Is there any stuff more in the vein of Binah? Groovy, mid-tempo and atmospheric-wise?
If the snare could be above the mix it would be great too.

How about Rippikoulu?! I was going to mention them but I wasn't sure if crawling death/doom was alright to rec or not.

Driving up to MTL to see these cats in a couple of weeks:

along with Ulcerate and Inter Arma

Both bands should be on everyone's watchlist. Phobocosm's full-length will be out in August. Chthe'ilist sometime this winter.

Speaking of "crawling death/doom" some of you will probably like local (to me) DM-ers Vastum. Take the heaviest, doomiest side of Bolt Thrower and the crustiest, filthiest side of Autopsy, throw in alternating male-female death growls (which are sick as hell BTW) and you've got all the feel-bad soundtrack you need...

Anyone have any recommendations for stuff that sounds like Nocturnus or Artificial Brain? Basically anything heavy with atmospheric sections and space themes?

Crystal Age's only full-length "Far Beyond Divine Horizons" is a pretty overlooked gem. Conceptually and aesthetically they kinda remind of Nocturnus, but if you're looking something similar sound-wise then Psypheria should fit the bill. You should try 'em both!

The tone and beginning riffs are right up my alley. Good stuff. One question, though: which 'Necropsy' is that? The only Necropsy I have in my collection is the album "Psychopath Next Door (2013)".

http://www.metal-archives.com/search?se ... =band_name

Edit: I found which one and it's this band (logo, country match): http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Necropsy/13333 and MA shows them as split up.

I had to edit what I wrote hard - apparently I got the wrong video at first for some weird reason. It was some deathcore outfit and sounded not much like Necropsy. I'm loving' that video.

I think Katalepsy has some similar super-heavy mid-tempo riffing. Check out 'Autopsychosis'.

Nice heavy riffing. A little more chaotic than what I'm looking for. Thanks for the rec.

Yeah, I was confused about that Necropsy Psychopath Next Door too, which doesn't sound bad BTW.

The Necropsy I linked to really reminds me of these two Cannibal songs. This sound and tempo is the epitome of what I consider "heavy". Bass-heavy, but not muddy. Drop-tuned, crunchy, but not raspy guitars. If I could find a few albums that were mostly this sound and tempo I'd be a happy camper.

Evisceration Plague

Necropsy's Death Prayer album only hits the mark about 1/4 of the time.

You might try a few of my other favorites. These are more straightforward crushing w/out all the technicality of a band like Katalepsy:

Dragging Entrails - Landfill Of The Butchered | Best songs: Misogynistic Clitoral Flaying and Meat Cleaver D-Cupitation

Extermination Dismemberment - Serial Urbicide

Kraanium - Post Mortal Coital Fixation

Holy hell! Those first two are really heavy ... unfortunately I can't take BDM's vocals. Dragging Entrails is almost good enough to actually ignore the vocals. The only previous BDM that's come that close to listenable for me was Abnormity's Irreversible Disintegration. The recording of that snare in Kraanium would drive me nuts. Sounds like the trash can lid that Lars was banging on in St. Anger. Getting closer though. Thanks.

I actually really like the vocals on that DE stuff, the ridiculously brutal gurgles are hilarious if nothing else. Great production too, but overall it's just a little too slam-heavy for my taste - I prefer stuff like Guttural Secrete when it comes to newer USBDM.

I love that Abnormity album! It's been a regular in my slam-filled playlist for a few years now. My album of the year the year before Katalepsy's Autopsychosis was one you could check out:

Deadly Remains - Severing Humanity (2012). This music is somewhere in between Dragging Entrails and Katalepsy. Closer to Katalepsy in that it's technical and simply not as bludgeoningly heavy. I think Deadly Remains do a great job of delivering lots of cool riffs, song structures, and interesting twists and turns of a technical variety, yet without getting you lost or confused. You also get plenty of crunch guitar riffs. They keep things together and relatively catchy and the whole album start-to-finish is strong. Not saying 'best album' of 2012. Just found it to be the one I listened to the most. My favorite. I would, however, put Autopsychosis against any similar-genre album for 2013 and there were a bunch of good ones. Passages Into Deformity chief among them.

Song: "Human Trafficking"

For slamming brutal death I really like Devourment and Cerebral Effusion for example:
Cerebral Effusion - Impulsive Psychopathic Acts (2010) (SPA) http://youtu.be/faivJvCTRjE
Devourment - Molesting The Decapitated (1999) (USA) http://youtu.be/0MKxZCnoj2Q
Devourment - Butcher the Weak (2005) (USA) http://youtu.be/ZuzMxG0erZU
Devourment - Unleash the Carnivore (2009) (USA) http://youtu.be/zw4PQGNippU

For regular brutal death Mortician and Abysmal Torment for example:
Mortician - House by the Cemetary (1995) (USA) http://youtu.be/nFHm_GoLB20
Mortician - Hacked Up For Barbecue (1996) (USA) http://youtu.be/oQ5e5K2Z9Gc
Mortician - Zombie Apocalypse EP (1998) (USA) http://youtu.be/h26YusiB9Ug
Abysmal Torment - Epoch Of Methodic Carnage (2006) (Mlt) http://youtu.be/QSqTWfQldyk
Abysmal Torment - Incised Wound Suicide EP (2004) (Mlt) http://youtu.be/-gRI9LmXORI

I second early Suffocation and presume you already know Nile?

Yeah, I already know about Nile and am a big fan of Devourment and Suffocation already, but I'll have to check out the others you two mentioned!

Has any decent war-themed death metal come out in 2014 yet? Last year I think I had WarCall and Kill Division by this time and still a new Hail of Bullets to look forward to. Did I miss something?

Yeah I heard that one. Decaying is cool but they're like Primal Fear to Hail of Bullets' Judas Priest. The songs just don't stick with me. Good suggestion though, exactly in the realm of what I'm into.

EDIT: Trenchrot also sounded pretty good. Very OSDM like the last Asphyx.
