This looks like a good idea...in an ideal situation.

Yeah, that was a pretty big thing in Iowa City while I lived there, except they were a fair bit smaller. When I was reporting for the paper there I actually had to go cover a "party" some literary group in the neighborhood was throwing for a local guy who set one up in his front yard. Ah, local papers...

Very small town feel once you get out of the Capitol proper.

Every single bar I've ever gone to in DC either a) was so crowded it took you an hour to get a beer that cost twice what it should or b) sent so many douche chills up my spine that I had to seek treatment for hypothermia. Usually both. I'll stick to old man bars in suburbia/Baltimore.

Eh, a lot of the bars around 11th-14th street NW are incredibly low-key and filled with some sweet bands/stand-up/music and buy one get one free drink specials (reminds me a shit ton of my time in Cleveland/Portland actually). I've never had to wait longer than it took to walk up to the bar for a drink, I've met dozens of genuinely interesting folk and I see a fair amount of awesome music for free (not too much metal though, but a lot of cool noisy rock). Never really see the need to go into the NE or by the monuments. Too many guys in suits or khaki shorts and shit athletic shirts talking about their last marathon and what organization they represent and too many girls attempting to relive sorority life in the form of government agencies. Gross. Like a whole city filled with half a college campus.

Dunno where you used to hang out, but my guess it was the DuPont/Hill area or the Arlington/Georgetown areas - as those are definitely filled with those peeps I was talking about.

^Adams Morgan too. My former flatmate took me there on a nightout shortly after I'd got to the city. Was like a frat house. Hellish.

I'd agree that there are plenty of douchey bars, but there's a bunch of places it's fun to go as well. The U-St area, and 14th St, and H St NE all have decent places where you can get space with your group of mates, and whilst the drinks are expensive that's the price I'm willing to pay to not drink shitty lagers all night (which inevitably attracts the whole "Bro, I had 12 beers last night!!" crowd also...). I've seen some pretty good shows while I've been here: the Melvins, Slayer, Gwar, Dead Kennedys, High on Fire, Blood Ceremony, and a couple non-metal/punk too, including Efterklang who might just be the best live band I've ever seen. I've not really got started on the jazz/blues clubs yet either.

The whole "what organization do YOU work for?" trope isn't limited to the DuPont crowd or the Georgetown crowd or the "Hill rat" crowd. It is to be found everywhere in D.C. because that's what D.C. has to offer and that's what people come to D.C. to do. It's annoying but expecting anything else would be like moving to Silicon Valley and hating everyone asking what tech start-up you work for.

Honestly you can probably find a good bar in pretty much any part of town except perhaps the southeast.

Eh, I've just never really ran into it in my neighborhood. It's a casual thing to talk about, but it's definitely not an all-encompassing thing. It may not be limited but it is definitely more prominent in those areas - those are where think-tanks/unis/government agencies are. I live next to two houses that host shows, only one high-rise and a shit-ton of restaurants and bars - not saying it never happens, just saying this crowd could be in any city. I'm not even saying it's a bad thing, just that it was annoying and that I generally prefer the crowd I'm with now, even when I'm working for the very same organizations I make fun of.

But, with all of that said, I moved here when it was really starting to become it's own city. The last two/three years have done a lot for the Yellow line areas (Shaw and Park View/Petworth in particular). Also, this must be boring - it's like hearing the Australians make fun of some oddly specific cultural phenomenon that only exists there. So, apologies.

Here's some Pentagram.

I've been to bars in most areas of DC and it's near impossible to escape those gross yuppie vibes. Sure, I've been to plenty of good shows in the area, but those aren't really bar experiences, y'know? I'm just not really big on the crowded bar scene in general, and it's just made so much worse in a place packed full of people flexing their salaries and turning every shred of social interaction into some exercise in career-oriented Darwinism. Sure, there are places like that everywhere, but when you've got to go digging to avoid it and you're *still* screwed on beer prices pretty much no matter where you go, it's easier just to stick to places that don't suck as much. Yeah, there are shit bars in Baltimore, too (Federal Hill is like Baltimore's version of Adam's Morgan - basically a bro mating ritual area) but there are also more quiet dad bars with good beer and wood and brass everywhere yet pleasantly devoid of intellectual property lawyers and lobbyists and dudes who generally make sure to hold their martinis in just such a way that you're sure not to miss how expensive their watches are.

tl;dr - all these goddamn yuppie social climbers can get off my lawn!

So in Reno most bars are open into the early morning- or all day. Basically, we hate drinking in other cities because the bars close.

I've quit for a year now, but that's besides the point.

Anyone know what's going on with Revelation/Against Nature/Bland Hand records? I've been a pretty big fan since I saw them in Montreal and am in love with records like Release, For the Sake of No One and especially Ghosting, released under the Against Nature name. They used to release all their tunes for free on their website, but it looks like it's down. Early Revelation is kind of hit or miss: pretty good riffs, but Brenner hadn't yet found a good way to "deal" with his... unique vocals. But the later albums they released have been amazing, really laid back jam music almost. Great riffs and Brenner really lights up the fretboard with his leads, Bert Hall Jr plays some great bass accompaniments and the drums are simple but classy and always serving the song. I know they've never been popular, but it would be a shame to see them kinda fade away cause I do really think they write some legitimately great music.

I'm relatively sure Revelation is still going on. Your'e right about the unique vocals; i never liked them, but when we saw them at that Montreal show (as well as the time I caught Against Nature earlier) you could barely hear them so it was ok. THe riffs, sound, drumming...all that stuff's seriously great.

Well, that's Canada... The last time there was water on the streets across your southern border, people were looting flatscreen TVs while the corpses floated past.

I like this explanation. :) Basically, I didn't like having a long username when I was using the chat... so to save time I just had it shortened on the forum, too.

It's very sad about what's happened to Malcolm Young. Those Bon Scott era albums were a huge part of my musical upbringing.

So, science finally seems to confirm the rather obvious yet generally ignored observation that America's political system is democratic in theory at best.

Would I be right in assuming that this news story will not be featured on mainstream American television because America's political system is a Oligarchy?

As usual, youtube is recommending I listen to Dimmu Borgir, Korpiklaani (that is the Finnish way, take a word and put an 'i' at the end of it and say its Finnish - the original word is Corpse Clan, someone tell dreadmeat that so he can roll his eyes and say he has the first Aussie press on - wait for it - CD), Meshuggah and Hammerfall.

I never listen to these bands, or bands like them, why does youtube do this? I only use youtube for one thing, and it is this:
