Everyone's favorite astrogrind band's 2014 album. Perfectly jizz-inducing for anyone who likes to put on Abyssal and beat it to their tonality. But much faster.

Streaming Plebeian Grandstand: Lowgazers

this album... well it's straight up Deathspell Omega ripped. Not as layered but def influenced. i can see why all of a sudden a bunch of newbies are bitching in the blacklist thread asking why they had been blacklisted. So far this album is pretty good evidence. Nothing prior to it was metal based though good.

But those people also don't realize it's not released yet.

Fukpig: This World Is Weakening

This is basically a re-recording of the album 3 as the full band and with a couple of extra songs.

This is what 3 should've sounded like. So full and great. 3 really sounded like a rush job on everything really weak even the vocals. This one is fucking thick and vicious.

Just some great black metal that's not long winded but the songs feel longer than what they are in a good way. Love this shit.

Edguy - Tears of a Mandrake.

As I was reading the thread about Edguy's new record I felt like listening to this album. Total greatness, this album feels like going to the theater.

Tzun Tzu: St

This is how brutal death metal should be. chaotic suffocating and not all focused on slams and shit. Also that nice twisting churn a lot of Australian bands seem to just develop in their riffing styles.

Back to the beginning (of the reunion/revival/reincarnation of MR). I remember loving the hell out of this album.

Arch Nemesis - After Forever

One of the more interesting PM albums out there stylistically. Every song on this thing is like a dream, floating along like a shamanic voyage through the mind.

Strings and some electronic arrangements I like (but in small doses). Personally, I want to see power metal with a lot of electronic elements - like recent Blood Stain Child gone power metal. I've heard some doujin stuff do that though. There is some Russian band called Hammerforce that does this, but I thought they sucked.

That'd either be really cool or really cheesy. I'm not sure which one.

Quote:
Hell, album covers, band pictures, anything. I find bands via twitter and concert posters over there too. Sometimes I check out bands by who's talking to who over there (Japan's scene seems to be pretty tight). Most of this stuff I couldn't find on mp3 even if I wanted to, so I've been buying stuff based on very little to go on - for the most part, I've been pretty lucky so far.

My experience has also been pretty positive. Mostly blinding buying things, dropping a lot of money on an album relative to western CDs, but it's been worth it. Japanese people really seem to do power metal a lot better than everyone else. I've also been getting into their post rock scene at the same time and it's really good too and a lot better than other stuff I've heard.

Quote:
hehe I could namedrop stuff like crazy :P But yeah, it sucks how expensive shit is over there. I use HMV Japan for larger orders, and places like S.A. Music or Disk Heaven for smaller orders.

Their scene seems pretty healthy at the moment. There's a LOT of good up and coming bands, plus some ones from the mid 00's resurfacing and releasing good albums: eg, Longinus, Prophesia, etc

This will pass most people by, mainly due to the language barrier, Engrish/bad accents, and I find a lot of this stuff has a pretty high learning curve. Internationally speaking, I think Japan's scene will always be a niche market (yet it manages to be completely self-sustaining).

I'll keep those sites in mind, thanks. I personally find the language barrier thing funny. For me, I had a mild aversion to non-English-lyric bands, but then I thought to myself, “well, I listen to harsh vocals like it's no problem, so what's wrong with clean vocals in another language?” And there you go. I know a guy who is decently into metal at work, and he generally likes the stuff I play, but he can't really get into any of the foreign language stuff. I guess it really is a big deal for some people.

Quote:
Kizuna was the first song that hooked me, New Legend was the second. I think I like Everlasting a bit more than that one now though. I can't wait for their older stuff to arrive in the mail, I should've bought those aeons ago!

My general plan is to slowly obtain Gargoyle's and Galneryus's discography over the next few months. Hopefully, I won't get sidetracked too badly.

Quote:
Things seem so weird over there, I wonder if things over here are going to start to seem really boring? Like, they put a pretty strong emphasis on presentation over there, whereas over here its normally pretty bland or non-existent. Like, I've always had a tendency towards weird/experimental shit, and I think I'm getting my ass handed back to me on a platter haha

I've found a lot of power metal over there (esp. in the doujin camp) that's really fucking weird. And it doesn't sound forced either - over here, such things would sound totally forced, over there they don't even break a sweat. In fact, it sounds rather genuine/endearing.

Yeah, they make a lot of weird shit over there. (Sigh being one of the reigning champions obviously). I've been drawn to a lot of that kind of music as well. There are really some sounds that only Japanese people are going to do.

Quote:
"Chronostrings" I can't wait for (my next uber-priority). The album cover is really neat. Then again, I like power metal album covers over there a lot more than the crap over here.

That is a pretty badass cover isn't it?

Quote:
Indeed, one of my favorites by them. That song (along with some of Light Bringer's stuff) may have turned me on to the bass guitar. The bass/guitar tapping solo is insane, plus I like how the drumming goes along with Syu's guitars perfectly. Actually, Junichi is pretty underrated, IMO - he wastes most power metal drummers. Mind you, a side of me would rather put Galneryus in prog metal than power metal.

Yeah, those fills are pretty fucking sweet. One of the few times where you can ignore the guitar solo and air drum instead.

NP: Boris – Akuma No Uta

I've never been too big into drone stuff, so the first track is alright, but I really dig the second half of this album.

Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine

One of their best songs. Damn shame they slow it down so much live now. It completely kills the song's impact.

I started to listen to it yesterday and it seemed to be more similar than I had expected. Anyway, a few seconds later my computer decided that it had lived long enough and it collapsed. :annoyed:

Zombie Ritual - Zombie Party

Sirenia - Meridian

I have rarely heard female vocals being used to such perfection. The music is so heavy, but she just soars above it all.
