From http://www.thegauntlet.com/article/8417 ... VALLENFYRE

Quote:
As announced last week, the UK Death Metal band VALLENFYRE signed a worldwide deal with Century Media Records. The band just released the "Desecration / Iconoclast" 7" on Imperium Productions and you can listen to samples of both songs on http://www.vallenfyre.com where you can also find a link to order one of the last few copies of the 7" which is limited to 500 copies. We can already guarantee that at least the b-side "Iconoclast" won't be released anywhere else in the near future. VALLENFYRE is the brainchild of Gregor Mackintosh, songwriter and guitarist of PARADISE LOST, along with members of MY DYING BRIDE, AT THE GATES and DOOM. We didn't announce all the details in the first news piece because we wanted you to judge the songs on their own merit and not be biased either way. And it looks like most of you liked what they heard on the band's website.

The full line-up is:

Gregor Mackintosh (PARADISE LOST) - Vocals and Lead Guitar
Hamish Glencross (MY DYING BRIDE) - Rhythm and Lead Guitars
Mully - Rhythm Guitars
Scoot (DOOM, EXTINCTION OF MANKIND) - Bass
Adrian Erlandsson (AT THE GATES, PARADISE LOST) - Drums

The sound of VALLENFYRE goes back to Greg's youth: "I was first introduced to more extreme music by my older brother in 1981. Over the next few years in my early teens I grew to love various early hardcore punk bands like Discharge, English Dogs, Conflict etc. Around a similar time I was becoming aware of other more metal music like Motörhead and Black Sabbath. In '84/85' I got into bands who were fusing these styles like Hellhammer, Antisect and Amebix. A couple of years later I started tape trading with people all around the world which enabled me to hear lots of really cool, interesting, extreme music. Autopsy, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Repulsion, Nihilist are some of the more well known names I started to get into but there were many many more which never gained the same notoriety. At the same time I formed Paradise Lost with my friends. Our early stuff was a bit of a mixture of all this stuff but we also had a lot of doom influence from the likes of Candlemass, Trouble and St Vitus."

The events that led to the conception and formation of VALLENFYRE are not particularly happy or pretty ones: "In the late summer of 2009, my father John Mackintosh was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Later in the Autumn as his treatment progressed, Paradise Lost embarked on the their European tour to support the latest album [Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us]. A week into this, I received a call from my mother telling me that the doctors had found cancer in his lungs and it was terminal. He only had weeks to live. I made the decision to leave the tour leaving my very able guitar tech Milly [not be confused with Vallenfyre's Mully] to take my place. I went and stayed with my parents for the next few weeks. After a very sad and painful time he passed away on the 2nd December early in the morning. Over the next few weeks I experienced all the famous stages of grief. It started to become very self destructive so I decided to channel it into creating something. To pay respects to the man that drove us to our very first gigs because none of us could drive. The only Dad I knew that listened to Bolt Thrower's Peel Sessions on the radio. The guy who gave me my first chord book. I decided that I was going to go right back to the beginning. To my roots in Death, Crust and Doom. It all started very Angst ridden. This wasn't originally meant for anyone else to hear. It was a release. After recording some material I realized that I was actually enjoying doing this but I wanted friends involved so it could actually become real fun."

The 7" tracks and the upcoming album were recorded between December 2010 and April 2011.

Greg: "The album is called 'A Fragile King' which is a reference to my fathers' battle with cancer. The lyrics are predominantly about the same thing but also include gripes with society, religion, politics and relationships as well. It's all pretty grim."

The VALLENFYRE debut album "A Fragile King" will be released on October 31st, 2011 in Europe and on November 1st, 2011 in North America through Century Media Records. VALLENFYRE is not a one-off project but will continue as a band that will also play live in 2012. Stay tuned for more background information.

You can hear how it sounds here: http://www.vallenfyre.co.uk/

What do you think? I'm looking forward to this, Greg is one of my favourite guitarists and this sounds good.

A teaser for the upcoming 2014 album 'Splinters'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jzf8sGyjuQ

This stuff sounds awesome, it's basicly a return to classic era Paradise Lost but way more uptempo ofcourse (think: Autopsy, Entombed, Dismember). Should be a quality OSDM release. Erlandsson is a drumbeast in this video btw :headbang:

here's the cover for 'Splinters' in full

I'll check this out...but really hope the band will actually write more effective songs this time. Don't get me wrong; I'm sure Vallenfyre have the right intentions and whatsnot, but I felt their debut to be extremely one dimensional and not impressive enough save for the eerie, morbid leads.

Great stuff, I'm surprised I liked their first album so much as I don't much like the vast majority of the band members main bands. Proper 1991 death metal.

I thought the first album was quality work and this just by the teaser sounds like it'll be quality as well. Like the cover art as well though it seems a bit more d-beatish style. Regardless I'll be buying.

The first album was really good, but I was hoping for a more straightforward OSDM attack. I felt that songs lke Seeds or My black Siberia really dragged down the album: I'd prefer a shorter and more direct release, maybe a more crusty or d-beat influenced album. Anyways, I'm sure it's gonna be good!

I quite enjoyed the first album. Some killer old school doom/death. We need more doom/death bands in that style to begin with you know stuff like Sempiternal Deathreign or what Asphyx has been doing since day 1.

New song is up! Fast as hell verses, they're really bringing out the crust influence. And as always, Kurt Ballou's production is absolutely devastating. My only critique is that I was hoping for a new approach in terms of guitar tone, but I guess that's what makes it OSDM.

the new song sounds more swedish and d-beaten for sure. Might end up sounding less doomy than the debut.

I got this a few weeks back and think it is great. I'm listening to it more than I probably did 'A Fragile King'. Would love to see these guys live!

i listened to the new one today. It is a more diverse record. Could use some a bit more of an organic filthy sound though, it sounds a bit too much like a sterile amp used together with what sounds like a hm2.

Been listening to Splinters regularly since it came out. Absolutely love the sound and atmosphere. I never got around to listening too much to the previous album, but upon taking a liking to Splinters I might do so in the near future.

The new album is a lot more memorable than the first album; I could tell that from the first song along, which was already more interesting than their first album. Their first album wasn't bad, really, just didn't really stand out.

Men i dig this album "Splinters" it makes want to bash some skull. That album has so much anger and energy. I dont like a damn Paradise Lost but i am addicted to Death Metal Crustie in pits of Doom.

I'm on completely the opposite side... I loved almost every track of the debut and spun it over and over, but other than a few decent riffs and a couple of solid songs on Splinters, I've been really quite disappointed with it so far. It strikes me (like a lot of these OSDM albums at the moment) as guitar tone audio porn first and foremost, with the actual songwriting left on the backburner a bit. Who knows though, I might warm to it. I hope so since I've been looking forward to it for a year, only to be underwhelmed.

looks like Erlandsson is skipping the upcoming euro tour, so Vallenfyre will be playing with a stand-in drummer then.... I kinda saw this coming (it just didn't combine with At The gates touring later this year + his involvement with Paradise Lost and The Haunted). It wouldn't surprise me if he skips out on Paradise Lost 'or' The Haunted aswell... It's just too much food on his plate...
