Progressive rock and metal are by far my favorite genres. Queensrÿche, Rush, and Pink Floyd provide me endless listening enjoyment. Of course my love extends to almost all sub-genres of rock and metal, but there are a few that just don't fit that mold. Shame me if you want to, but I love Prince. He can play the hell out of just about anything he gets his hands on and his songs are just enjoyable. Seal is another artist who slips between the cracks. "Crazy" is one of my favorite songs for god's sake. It makes no sense to my normal musical tastes. Are there any artists that just don't fit your normal diet?

Funny thing about Prince, but an old musician friend/the guy who produced our last album swears that Prince is just faking it when he plays guitar and that what you hear isn't actually being produced by his fingers on stage, which are just doing random shit. I really don't know enough to say either way but the guy was full of funny observations like this.

Theoretically, Poison is everything I hate. I like that double live album though that shows that Deville and Rokket should be doing something else. Also I like Anal Cunt.

Other than that my musical taste is superior to everyone else.

I'm not ashamed of anything that I actually "like", but for the purpose of this thread I do enjoy Creed, but have no real idea why because I'm not religious, not interested in music at all that isn't some form of metal, classic rock, or blues (though I've been trying to branch into "goth rock" lately). Maybe it's nostalgia from my pre-metal days, maybe it's because Scott Stapp is a great singer and Mark Tremonti is one of the more involved guitarists of that era...I dunno, all I know is I just find their music enjoyable .

Mark Tremonti is a great player but I absolutely detest Creed hahaha, Henry Rollins pretty much hit the nail on the head when describing them.

Not really a guilty pleasure at all but as for not fitting into my typical music tastes, I suppose you could list the tons of mandarin and cantonese pop and rock stuff from the 80s and 90s. Hong Kong's Four Heavenly Kings are the shit.

Same here for the same reasons - Creed was my first "favorite" band in the old days of fifth grade, though these days I can only really enjoy My Own Prison. Some really creative songwriting there, especially on the first two tracks - The chorus on Ode kicked off my love of big layered-vocal choruses that's stuck through to my metal days.

Well, I enjoy glam such as Quiet Riot, Cinderella, and Europe. I also like ELP, especially Tarkus. If this goes into metal as well, I love tech death like Brain Drill, Origin, Monumental Torment, etc that everyone seemingly hates.

Glenn Benton. Hear me out, I know he hasn't produced a decent album since Stench... maybe it's the curmudgeon in me saying this but there's a certain Nick Nolte-esque charm to a 40 something year old man who's just always got a problem up his ass that I kinda respect. Deicide may never put out a good album again, but I kinda wanna see a 60 year old Benton just on stage at some shitty dive bar and realize there's gonna be a point in the show where he's just "had it" with some minor problem, will stop the entire show and just bitch at whoever will listen to his Ebeneezer Scrooge rant. It's probably just me, but there's a certain level of respect I have for that kind of petty anger that the dude seems to have.

The Tragically Hip. Amongst other bands but they really are a great band. Gord Downie is a great musician, and I think that their songs are deeply rooted into our culture as Canadians. Plus they've had a very successful go in the music industry. As well as Rush.

I absolutely love this Offspring song. It's the only thing I will ever want to hear from them.

I really like some old gangsta rap like N.W.A. and Geto Boys. There really is no reason I should, I listen to mainly punk/metal and I'm about as white as it gets. I guess it's sort of the feeling of it, it's kind of akin to punk for me because it was one of those in things in the 80s and 90s that all the politicians tried to blame pretty much everything on. That and a lot of it is catchy as fuck.

I've never been to a single punk house that didn't have, at the very least, a copy of "36 Chambers" floating around somewhere. It's really not unusual.

Neil Diamond. I don't own any Neil Diamond albums and I probably never will. To be fair, "Sweet Caroline" is a great song to sing along with when you're good and drunk, and "Crunchy Granola Suite" has a surprisingly good main riff. But the rest of his discography the likes of which you hear on easy listening and AM radio stations is just so terrible that I enjoy it, in spite of my better judgement. It's almost as if he takes performing shitty music into a whole other realm, the likes of which cannot be equaled, and for that reason I love him.

I dont feel particularly guilty for my non-metal musical tastes.

I really enjoy folk and ambient music and pop singers/grops like Lana del Rey, Of Monsters and Men, Zola Jesus, Grimes, Banks, Fever Ray, London Grammar and others. Yes, I love female "hipters" singers hahaha.

But I should feel bad for this one, oh ancient gods forgive me.

I listen to a lot more than metal, from big band jazz to electronic music. Some favourites are Weather Report, Jamiroquai, and KLF. Oh, and I don't find any music "embarrassing" if it's not metal. There's crap everywhere, metal or otherwise.

I'm reaching a stage where checking out new metal releases and old classics just doesn't really satiate my hunger for music like it used to. While I'm still primarily a metalhead, I love pretty much any type of music as long as it's catchy and well produced. I do tend to gravitate to more ambient/electronic as well as more laid back stuff like trip hop and other atmospheric, beat heavy music. Rap is always fun, too, there's actually a lot of legitimately good music coming from questionable rap acts, Clams Casino is a producer that I've been listening to a hell of a lot of recently, it's funny because the quality and atmosphere of his music is so compelling, and then you realize that he produces beats for guys like Souljah Boy (or whatever). I grew up listening to lots of punk, so I tend to listen to a bit of that as well, but truthfully I just haven't been into punk/hardcore as a genre for a long time, outside of a few favourite bands.

Sometimes it's easy to forget how little people give a shit about your taste in music when you are such an avid listener, so I get why some people might say they have "guilty pleasures". As I get older, I just care less and less. I think it's also the fact that I discuss music for it's own sake less and less and just listen to whatever is tickling my fancy at the time.

EDIT: Oooh, just read the Neil Diamond shout out and I had to add: Sweet Caroline is fucking awesome. I like a lot of strange songs like that, though, on account of the radio station they used to play at my old job. Lot's of great oldies from the 50s-60s, most of which who's song titles I'll never learn, but who's catchy melodies and annoying high pitched singing will stick with me till the end of time.

I usually dont like rap or hip-hop but there is a band, or there was, called Dälek, which has some interesting songs, very atmospheric ones and different from what I consider typical hip-hop.

I still listen to songs like "Abandoned language", which has an amazing last part with a very hypnotic section. Perhaps the majority of songs are nothing that original but this one and another few ones were interesting. I think that I discovered this band thanks to Lantlos´s facebook page.

I love Rise Against, and think that the Sufferer and the Witness is their best album. couldn't bring myself to like those two albums they put out after that, and that whole "hey, buy our shoes- cuz they're totally not made in a fucking sweat shop, which is what half our songs are about" remark...

The only group that comes to mind is the Christian pop-rock band Polarboy (mostly their album Back From Nowhere). I don't listen to anything else even remotely like it, but I enjoy their stuff for some reason.

I have Brad Fidel's soundtrack for the first Terminator film. I'm really not a fan of electronic-exclusive music at all, but that soundtrack is just badass as fuck for me, and it's the only thing of its kind I listen to outside of whatever film/game it might be on.

Great soundtrack, overshadowed by the second film's. I love that one theme when they are escaping the police station during the shootout.

I guess my contribution here would be CKY, I was really into them around 1999 or so, and they are probably the first heavier band I really considered myself a committed fan of. Miller was a big Death and Pestilence fan in the early '90s, so he never sacrificed the almighty riff even though the band had plenty of alternative leanings. In the minds of evil was good to me, but judging from his last interviews before it came out, he seemed fine. He sounded a lot more enthused, like before Stench came out, cause all of them contributed. However, it did annoy me how he said that the lyrics were brutal and he wasn't holding anything back, when they were the same thing he's been doing.

Since May last year I began listening to Metal again (I listened mostly to Iron Maiden back when I was 15 to 19, hell I even went to a couple of gigs on 08-09') only that this time I entered the realm of Black Metal, which seemed really appealing to me due to the atmosphere it evokes, I was however avoiding some bands and labels for their possible links with ns but I don't care much about it anymore (still won't listen to nsbm bands though) but because of that and other reasons I stopped listening to it on September. Fast forward to the present and I find myself listening to it again.

However I still like a fair amount of music that has nothing to do with Metal, from Punk to Bowie to the Cure, hell even The Julie Ruin. I'm also getting into Neofolk again.

Since Black Metal is infamous for being elitist, would liking those artists I just mentioned make me an outcast in my local BM scene? It would suck if I tried to meet people and get shunned because of it.

Yes, if you are ever caught listening to Bowie on last.fm or whatever, you will be blacklisted from every black metal distro on the internet, promoters will bar you from attending shows, etc. There are, of course, ways around this, such as disabling scrobbling whenever you listen to more...questionable...material. Just don't tell anyone about it.

well, im not really ashamed of anything thats metal (save for some power metal bands because the lyrics in some....), but when im sick of my CD and im not at a red light to swap, i switch over the radio. Id wager there is equally as much trash as there is listenable, or even great music imo.

im in love with whatever shakira does. Lana del ray is good too. I hate to say it, but katy perry has some catchy stuff too.

as cynical as it may sound, there are some songs that come on that really annoy me, but i listen to right before i switch back to my CD, just to remind myself how great the CD is. i like to think of it like playing in the mud before taking a very thorough shower.

thats not to say that there isnt stuff that is absolutely intolerable. a single note from that song by Avicci or "happy" by pherell williams or whatever is enough to make me gag. same for ANY indie/alt hippy rock song.

I really don't like this idea of "guilty pleasures." Music is music. When it comes to metal, I love everything from Earth to Motorhead, but I'm also a big fan of Kanye West and a lot of "mainstream" music. It's all good. It's one thing to have preferences. That's totally fine, but to bash other kinds of music is, more often than not, motivated by a tribal mentality, or other sentimental reasons.

nearly everything on modern rock radio. and i guess a better term would have been hipster rock, or hipster music in general. I used to work with a guy who played that trash all the time (though he was a really cool guy, i just hated his music). bands like silversun pickups, starfucker, los campesinos, atlas, that band that was in one of the samsung commercials. i know this will probably be met with "those arent hipster alt/indie rock bands" but regardless of what you label them, i cant stand that noise or just about anything like it

Though the OP did have the word 'shame' in it, for my part I didn't answer this as a guilty pleasure question. I thought more about being surprised when I enjoyed a band even though my past experience with similar music gave me every reason to expect I wouldn't.

Though I can't name a single song from any of the artists you listed, or even say I know I've heard them before, your description gave me a pretty good understanding of just what kind of music you're talking about... Well, I'll tell you this: I don't care what you call it, because I don't like it either.

It's not just the sound of it I hate, though. It's the cultural aspect that I find truly pathetic. What you've described to me is that shitty sunshine music for all the well-to-do, self-pitying and "nostalgic" yuppies of my generation. The ones who just wish it could be "summer 4 ever" after finding out how unsatisfied and empty they feel with being cool and slumming in the big city for a living, because "it was better" (easier, and less meaningless) for them to play the part of their parents' whiny pet poodles. It's just a lot of misplaced sappiness and nostalgic longing suited only for spoiled brats. Gross.
