first thing that comes to mind Circle of Dead Children - Human Harvest,grindcore with slight death metal influences.

EyeHateGod also play some pretty heavy fucking shit,check Confederacy of Ruined Lives ,it's as bitter as sludge gets.

Anaal Nathrakh are also pretty damn heavy,they play Grindcore influenced Black Metal or vice versa,i wouldn't know,i don't really like this band,but it sure is heavy

Prostitute Disfigurement ,a brutal death metal band from the netherlands,nothing too special about their music in general,the vocalist uses the old "pig squeal" ,guitars sound heavy as fuck and some songs come with sounds of people being murdered,overall heavy stuff,not very impressive though.

Dragged into sunlight,i don't understand what genre these guys fit into ,but their guitars sound lke a well constructed brutal wall of sound,this is a constant in their sound,the vocals are kinda black/death...i've read around the internet that they're black/sludge,but you know,these genre thing might be a little unfair,try listening to them if you get the chance,they're quite unique

I haven't heard all their stuff, but the collaboration they did with the Japanese band Hijokaidan ('Both Noises End Burning') is the heaviest, most brutal & extreme music I've ever heard.

Dragged Into Sunlight, Swans, Abyssal, Defeated Sanity, have already been mentioned, but those together sound like a decent crash course in extreme heaviness.

DS have taken the basic post-Suffocation sound and made it even heavier, vaguely similar to Devourment 15 years ago but way more technical.

Abyssal's 2013 album is so crushing and claustrophobic that I still haven't fully digested it. Probably as close to Dragged as anything last year.

Swans are really an entity unto themselves. Overall I prefer their comparatively mellower 90's stuff, but almost nothing beats 'Cop' or the 'Young God' EP for sheer musical malevolence. Extreme metal bands have spent the last 30 years trying to catch up to what an NYC noise rock band was doing back in '84.

Dragged Into Sunlight's 'Hatred for Mankind' is possibly the heaviest metal album I've ever heard. Someone once said that their guitar tone sounds like the old Sunlight Studios "chainsaw" tone (think early Entombed) soaked in a vat of battery acid. And the Charles Manson/Aileen Wuornos/whoever samples just add to the scariness of it all.

One or two posters above mentioned Conan, who are indeed heavy as fuck. I'll probably be buying the new album in short order.

I'm new here, but utterly happily surprised to find a mention of Borbetomagus here!!! One of the best bands ever. Love their stuff dearly since a friend played me their 1989 album Snuff Jazz in 1994. Have collected most of their output, saw them live once in Gothenburg, it was pure bliss. Buncha Hair That Long is a favourite, an easy start. To be honest, I prefer Live in Tokyo to the Hijokaidan collaboration. Experience The Magic is really intense listening, although maybe not "heavy" as in doom metal. Don Dietrich's solo 7'' has a lovely production too. I like the organic, human sounds at the core of Borbeto, which to me is worth more than the tape-slicing effects noise of other "noise" acts. Also, when I check out some black metal or whatever band on Youtube and it sounds good, sometimes I play a Borbetomagus video at the same time, which more often than not makes it sound f-in' awesome.

The thread said 'heaviest shit you've ever heard' so I decided to go with the heaviest band I've ever heard! I mean I'm a fan of more then just metal, I love heavy, intense music in general, and to be honest, even if some people won't admit it, most, if not all of Borbetomagus' material is heavier, more 'brutal' & intense then any metal I've ever heard. I haven't heard the 'Live In Tokyo' album so that's why I went with the Hijokaidan collaboration, I need to check that one out. I just ordered 'Borbetomagus A Go Go' & 'Songs Our Mother Taught Us'......

You can't really go wrong with Borbetomagus, after a couple of years they got noisier & more brutal but still experimenting. Please note that Borbeto Jam and Industrial Strength is them at their most "traditional free jazz", due to the many "old school" guest artists, so I'd call those two less essential (I don't think they'll be rereleased on cd). I guess my issue with the more recent Hijokaijdan collaboration is the drums/percussion, it becomes a bit more conventional to me, but is enjoyable in its own right - still, aren't both groups more vile sounding on their own? The album Sauter & Dietrich did with Thurston Moore is a good one (best thing he ever did maybe), Barefoot in the head. I also have a soft spot for Sauter's & Dietrich's "Bells together", but "heavy" isn't the right word, more like an unplugged experimental sax album. "Asbestos shake" with Voice Crack is really bizarre too. Also dig the 7'' single The original chirping chicken/Choking Olga very much, it has that guttural low-end sound (here's the B-side):

I like a thread which namechecks Celtic Frost's Monotheist along with Swans and then Borbetomagus! Feels like home.
I too prefer the (comparatively) "mellower" Swans in the mid-90s, I saw them live twice during their last two tours before they (temporarily) quit. Among the best - and indeed heaviest - gigs I ever been to. Saw them once after the "resurrection", partly as extremely good as back when, partly ...not so, sad to say, it didn't always take off, I didn't think the new songs was as good as the ones one had been spoiled with before. I preferred the Gira acoustic solo gig I caught in the interrim years, he had lost none of his intensity.

You mean, outside of goregrind shit like Last Days Of Humanity that's so heavy that it becomes unlistenable?
In that case, probably a doom/stoner band, like Bongripper or Electric Wizard or something.

Last Days of Humanity never actually struck me as all that heavy. Maybe because everything I've heard from them sounded like it was recorded with a tin can.

That being said, a bunch of slam/deathcore is what comes to mind for me-- Extermination Dismemberment, (early, early) Whitechapel, Disfiguring the Goddess, Gorevent, the like. At a certain point, it's kind of superfluous to try and find just one single band that's really heavier than everything else; it's kinda... well, long since been done. I don't think I'll ever hear an album that I can definitively say 'Yes, this is without question the single heaviest thing I've ever listened to.'

I also thing for straight death metal Hail Of Bullets, Binah, Disma and others are heavy in their own ways. Especially Hail Of Bullets.

Possibly that Justin Broadrick/Aaron Turner collaboration, Greymachine, would be up there for me. Ludicrously heavy, dense stuff, but I can't say I liked it all that much.
