Have my song/ep pretty much finished. I'll be recording and posting the first part of it this week, the other four parts will be up all at once when they're done. I've been writing for it for just about a year now and I'm really fucking excited that it's coming to fruition. I ended up not having anywhere near enough lyrics for it so I'll also be working on that, which is always fun. It's supposed to be a concept album based on a delusion psychosis I went through in the past due to drugs. Almost all of my lyrics ever were written in some state of inebriation so I think this could turn out well. Or absolutely horrible. I guess I'll find out. Also after trying to do Dani Filth's scream from 1993 for the past three years of my life I finally figured it out. I guess the correct term for it is whistle register plus vocal fry and a little bit of oomph. Really hard to figure out, pretty easy once you get the feel for it.

I personally hate Mr. Filth's vocals, so hopefully you'll have more "oomph" than a cat that got its tail stepped on.

But anyway, is there any tricks that yall guys use on yourselves that gets you into a lyrical writing state of mind? I've had a song almost completed for weeks and yet, I have absolutely zip for lyrics or vocals...

I'm not much of a writer, but I'll think of a song title/theme first and then write about it while having vocal patterns in mind. A deadline also helps.

Since the deadline was extended I took a few days off, so I just gotta record a few solos and vocals (got the lyrics written) for the thrash challenge and then try to figure out how to do stuff in reaper like add eq and compression.

Devin Townsend does it here and there as well, I think his is better than Dani's now although neither of them do it. For lyrics I usually have to think about what it is I'm going to write about, usually something that's personal or means something to me, and then I kind of just become that and it flows. I find that it has to mean something to me or else the outcome just seems too cliche or not even worth it. I've recited poems at things and people usually give me good feedback but as far as lyrics go I'm not sure how much better they are, but then again it's pretty much the same thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

edit: post #420

I have a booklet of tons of lyrics. But usually I can think of something immediately and spot on. Like when I'm recording Dragunov material after we write and record the song I literally take 2 mins to scribble something down for lyrics and then just run with that.

Just finished a rough draft of my lyrics. I'm probably gonna wait til later today to do the vocals though, since my wife is babysitting. I will say this: These lyrics aren't written the way I usually write, but I personally think they are badass and I can't wait to try them out.

Ultimately that's all that matters. Fuck everyone else, if they like my shit too then that's cool but I'm worried about making music that sounds cool to me.

That's how I feel always. goes for everything I do. I was having a discussion with a couple of people about the production on the CA song I just resently posted both of which just completely hate it. I like how it sounds so therefore it's not getting changed. They couldn't seem to get that.

Again I'm short of time but I'm progressing with the Ff pre prod tracks. I expect to have this weekend some of them done for the guys to listen.

SLK, I'll check the material you sent me on Friday. Then I'll have an answer.

I programmed about 60% of the drums for this first section last night, which is more than I've done in the past two months. Now I just have to do a couple different variations at different tempos and "the riff that has no time signature." This really motivates me to get mics and shit so I can just play the goddamn drums myself. At first I was a bit skeptical of this whole thing, but after playing along to the drums a couple times I think it's gonna be pretty cool.

Merihim just completed a new black metal hymn called Under the Sign of Lucifer. It's only a youtube release for now, but I think it's also on ReverbNation (I don't run that account so I don't know for sure yet). Also I'm standing by for submission to the host of the current challenge. Gonna check that after I'm done here.

My folk band Crestfallen Still is currently in the studio working on our full length album which we will be heavily promoting soon.
100% of album profits are going to Children's Cancer Research Fund.

My metal band IntroVertuM is working on one song at a time , spontaneously one day per month, it's a very slow process, fitting for doom metal I guess....

Here's a picture of the 5 way pedal board I was talking about and all the specs:

Image

"FIRE BREATHER / SLEEPER" by my brand "Analog Saboteur" .custom made entirely out of raw parts. designed and created by hand 1 off custom for J.M. ( Cave Paintings ) 5 true bypass outputs with isolators, phase reversal, and ground lift. One true bypass loop for controling external pedals. And a custom crushingly brutal fuzz (Firebreather Fuzz). Built in power regulators, with two seperate regulated power outputs to power other external pedals. (Its for guitar)

Wait till I post some vids of it in action. Both as in just using the normal amps and their dirt settings and then clean going and using the firebreather fuzz stomp. That thing levels fucking buildings. I've only been able to do up 3 rigs mainly cause I didn't know he was going to be done when he was and I have to go buy more instrument cables to run up the other cabs. haha.

Well the tour fell through. Our friend in Chillum passed away two days before and the drummer of chillum is in Special Buddy Discount. We ended up playing just cleveland ourselves. Shitty how things went especially considering our friend was only 29.

Other then that we have been writing, getting new gear and preparing for a slew of shows in March. Hopefully going to put out something within a month or so. If you guys want the split with Special Buddy Discount we did PM me on here. SBD's side is awesome, crazy blackened grindcore. I'll give you free things too.

That's really sucks about your friend dying. Sorry to hear that. There is always more tours, not always more friends.

What's the split on?

When I hear "blackened grindcore" I immediately think of Anaal Nathrakh.

How Anaal Nathrakh-y are they?

probably very little. I think more like the crusty black metal stuff that's kinda mix of both... like Order of the Vulture

I have never thought of Anaal Nathrakh as having any grind influence. I haven't extensively listened to AN but I've always thought of them as just insane over the top black metal. SBD is grindcore with black metal riffs they are really awesome. Just crazy, lots of blasts.

The split is on tape. We will hopefully have a big cartel or something up soon but who knows how long. Hopefully going to be touring in the summer.

I don't have the internet so I don't want to set something up and not be able to reply to people or send them their things. Our drummer is supposed to. Hopefully he sees this and gets on it.

A couple days late, but February sucks like that. Here is February's Blacksoul Seraphim song, "Exalted Genocide".

http://blacksoulseraphim.bandcamp.com/t ... d-genocide

I do the harsh vocals on this one in addition to drums. My first time doing non-group or narration vocals.

I really liked the drumming on that, though the keys could be a little more upfront in places and I feel the vocal melodies aren't standout or catchy enough to be compelling/memorable, though doubtlessly well executed. The harsh vocals were cool too ;)

Why thank you. The cool part about doing the monthly release thing is that we can go back and make tweaks to the songs if we need to, be it production-wise or adding/changing elements. For now, think of all the songs as "single versions" until the album of them all comes out at the end of the year or at the start of next year.

I like that we've gotten more post-metal musically. Both Josh and I have really gotten into that style over the last year and a half, so it's not really surprising that that style has crept its way into Blacksoul Seraphim. The songs are still rooted in gothic/doom metal, and one of the songs we've got coming up is sort of our love letter to Black Sabbath, but it's definitely got a more post-metal feel to it with these new songs. Now to try and convince the mods to change our genre tag to "Doom/Gothic Metal (early), Doom/Post-Metal (later)".

My band did something similar last year, putting out 2 songs with accompanying music videos every couple months. It was fun, but the problem I found in the end was it became a bit harder to get people's attention after a while. Unless you've got a sizable following singles just don't generate press or interest like an album. Good luck though!

I've got a rather interesting show coming up on Friday. It's part of this Icelandic cultural event, some musicians are flying in tomorrow, we're gonna jam on Thursday, and then play a set together on Friday. Yeah. Oh and unbeknownst to us the promoters put up a post asking people to chose a song that every band and act will play together at the end of the night. So it seems we'll be having a giant jam on Neil Young's Heart of Gold with like 20 other people. It'll definitely be... unique.

Currently checking out this band Pornography that my friend has been doing for awhile own his own and finally decided to get it as more fuller band. Had someone up in TN where he lives play drums and I played bass. it sounds massively awesome and disgusting.

worked a bit on my build I have going on.

Discovered a shitty SX Les Paul copy in my storeroom which my brotherbought and abandoned. Can't be worth more than US$50 so rather than sell it I think I'm going to replace the jack and strings and just play in standard tuning for the first time in years.

It's been a religious drop-C tuning for me for almost 2 years straight, only recently I've set up my spare guitar to D standard which can be downtuned to drop C without a hassle should I suddenly need it for Oshiego. With this crappy SX guitar it's time to play punk rock covers ahahaha.

Either way I thought it was pretty fucking sick. Sort of has a Ne Obliviscaris vibe to me a little bit

Congratulations sir! I had no idea bands could win grants, thought that was for nanotechnology and scientists that work hard to revive long extinct deadly diseases. That's pretty damn impressive man, are y'all going to make more videos with that money or is it strictly for the music alone?

In Canada you certainly can, I remember seeing the liner notes in Cursed's (sludgy crust) final album thanking the Canadian government for grant money. I found that funny because they had lyrics attacking the government, but it was more draped in metaphors than a blatant "fuck the politicians" approach.

I purchased an Engl 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s

I played my amp (Engl Screamer 50w) through a Mesa 2x12 cabinet, loaded with the same speakers, and it did that chuggy, grindly metal sound really well (it actually made the Engl sound more like a Rectifier). In the end, though, it lacked the awesome brightness of Engls, the reason why I own that amp in the first place, and damn, the Engl cab really brings it out. There's still a ridiculous amount of bass without a tube screamer, so I use the Ibanez TS to tighten it up.

I love the lead tones I get from that, though the best lead settings aren't ideal for rhythm tones obviously, and with the Screamer I just have to make a compromise. Maybe I'll get some impossibly expensive Engl head with midi next.

The guy in the music store couldn't believe how heavy a cab with two 12'' speakers could be. It's 33 kilos, so it'll be a handful on the road.

Played with the band Vaporizer from VT a few days ago. The fact that people like that kind disappoints me to no end. But Vattnet Viskar was super heavy. If you guys can see them you should.
