I think I was in this same show and it was too much when I saw some guy's girlfriends in front of me dancing polka to the songs! That was lame! LOL!

Mare was definitely a letdown from what Kampfar was doing and moreso Djevelmakt since Thomas is no longer the guitar player. His riffs are really distinctive; a perfect mix of black, folk and classical influences, always providing a naturesque yet very dark feeling. The Thomas-less albums are very good black metal albums but lack that unique feeling the band had before.
If you wanna hear something really impressive from Kampfar, give a listen to Fra Underverdenen, thought Kvass and Heimgang are excellent as well. The debut and the first Ep are way more viking oriented (and some of the best to be heard), so if you like that (and Frost-Blodhemn era Enslaved for example) you'll love them.
Np: Forestfather - Unnamed song #4. I'm still recording it but what I'm listening makes me feel proud (at least from a songwriting's perspective).

Not even with the old albums could I get into Kampfar.
My friends use to tell me they CAN'T listen to their own music.

I've never heard anything like this. It's thrashy, a bit blackened, very atmospheric in its Middle Eastern sort of way and also has some really strong Maidenesque galloping. They've gone so far into their sound it's like they created a new subgenre almost. I suppose you'd just call it epic metal really; no other fitting descriptor.

And that's, maybe, why I could NOT get into them.

A Tale of Pagan Tongue from (1997) Borknagar - The Olden Domain.
Enjoying this more and more even though the melodies seemed a bit cheesy at first.

Going more brutal today:

Autopsy - The headless ritual
Mortician - Zombie Apocalypse
Broken Hope - Omen of disease
Terrorizer - Hordes of zombies
Suffocation - Pinnacle of bedlam

Coroner - Divine Step (Conspectu Mortis)

This album never gets old. It's groovy without being plodding; excellent hooky riff-writing. Progressive, technical. Amazing.

Hannes Grossmann - The Sorcerer

I'm liking this a bit more than any Obscura album.

Igulatus - Black Knight, from Call of the Horned God

I am pretty sure the general gist of this song is "I hate you, I want to kill you."

Sonata Arctica – My Selene

Amazing poetic lyrics

The only Sonata Arctica I could bother with. The fact that they never played it live told me the band didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground and convinced me they weren't worth exploring.

Iron Maiden - To Tame A Land

It was a shame that this wasn't played on the early days tour.

The news about the new album got me stoked. This has been on repeat for a while now.
Strange how some people who like Autopsy don't like this album. I think its absolutely brilliant

:headbang: :metal:

Fuck, this just rips!! Oldschool as all hell, without sounding tired. Chock full of vicious energy and killer, heavy riffs.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Statutory Ape

One of my favorites by them, even if it came from the meh Miasma.

One of my favorite bands! Pretty cool to see them mentioned here.

Hades - Pagan Triumph
Hades is right up there in terms of putting out quality black/viking in the early 90s. Perhaps, second only to Bathory.

Svartidauði - Psychoactive Sacraments

Towering, brooding, malevolent and all encompassing. The long, twisted song structures really come to the fore with this masterpiece. Excellent black metal from a great band.

Judas Priest - Ram it Down (album). Such a shame the album is so inconsistent. There are some really killer tracks on it but the filler is plenty on it. The title track is still pretty ripping!

I remember when this album was released; there was a radio which aired the title track and 'I'm a Rocker'. With such a preview it was almost obvious the album was killer; the soloing in both songs is totally stellar and stuff... the album was a mixed bag at the end but hell, I enjoyed the fuck out of it. I even remember recording the title track from the radio before getting the album (in a tape, obviously) and the first time I did it, the damned cassette's side A just ended when the solos started! hahaha! Nice ol' times. Priest always brings me those kind of memories.

Spite Extreme Wing - Vltra

The more I listen to this band's work the more I realize how special their output is. The outside influences and oddball quirks of the music they create are quite subtle, but it all combines together to create a sound that, to me, is truly progressive. Wish I could find more black metal like this, because I've been playing their releases to death.

Here's a band who's name doesn't ever come up. On this album, they play good unorthodox Black Metal with damn good bass

Stratovarius - Future Shock

I love the riff-happy speed metal-ness of this. I'd love to hear a band that made a whole career out of sounding like this, rather than just one album.

In Solitude - Death Knows Where

I had a really strange, nauseating dream that involved tracking this album down, so when I finally picked this up that weird feeling came back. I'm finally starting to enjoy it, though. Excellent song here.

Truly sublime dark Norwegian power metal. This album is amazing, I'm sure rexxz agrees with me.

Me too! I didn't like their second album at all though.

NP: Thalarion "Four Elements Mysterium"

Going through CDs and seeing if they're still worth keeping.

Dont blame Kampfar for this, as its music is not that folkie and I have seen a girl trying to do somekind of an arabic/sensual dance while Negura Bunget was playing some years ago. That was shocking.

A few minutes ago:

Lin Ton Taun-Izarren begipean.

A nice taste of melancholic rock sang in Basque.

Instinct - Chamber Dark

Some fucking awesome lo-fi UK black metal, with a kindred spirit to the mighty Myrkr. Mostly mid-paced, but the wiry, spartan, richly nuanced guitar work is quite good - as are the vocals that seem to come from another dimension, or age.

I'm seeing lots of cool stuff on this page :-D

Hades Archer - Penis Metal, off the album of the same name

Surprisingly melodic and epic, considering its name. I mean, it doesn't sound like Dawn or anything, but it's not a cacophonic mess either.

On my second spin of this album album... meh. Decent, listenable, acceptable, will be forgotten. Love the vocals, but that's about the only thing that really stands out

Medeia - Sleep

This stuff rules. If you want Rotten Sound doing an album of longer songs with more melody and without the breakneck speeds, Iconoclastic is a treat. That guitar tone's grindy as balls!

Shroud Of The Heretic - Mourn

Digging the hell outta this deep'n'murky death metal. Really down-tuned, but still enough clarity to stop it becoming a swampy mess. Influences are apparent, but I don't fuckin' care one jot. Solid, heavy, ugly death metal. Perfect.
