So I'm looking for something fairly specific. I literally know nothing about doom metal at all but I'm taking it that this is what the Monotheist album is based on what I've read about it. I'm looking for something similar to this album as I can't get enough of it. I love the big menacing guitar tone and the overall dark brooding atmosphere and I'd love to find some similar stuff.

Check out KYPCK:

They don't really have the vague thrash/black/death tendencies that Monotheist has, but they nail that vaguely gothic doomy sound with huge guitars thing pretty well.

Triptykon might be an obvious recommendation, formed by ex-Celtic Frost guitarist Tom G. Warrior.

Triptykon is perfect! Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I just love this style's progression and atmosphere. I could listen to this all day.

This is probably a less-obvious rec, but parts of "Monotheist" remind me a little of later Godflesh, especially the final album "Hymns". Obviously it's a starker album without much of the rich variety found on "Monotheist", but you may find something to like.

Also, there are a couple of moments (particularly "A Dying God...") that remind me of Khanate.

Monotheist has a few songs that are very close to dutch doom/death from the early 90's. So maybe check some of those bands like Sempiternal Deathreign, Spina Bifida and Delirium.

You may like Lord Mantis. Pervertor is the album. It's more rhythmic than Monotheist but when I heard it for the first time I thought "this is like Celtic frost and meshuggah!" Don't worry... It's not "djent."

I think you would love Atriarch.

Monotheist is one hell of a brooding opus man. Love every bit of that record. Triptykon is an obvious recommendation as stated above. I second Atriarch as well, they play an eclectic blend of post-punk and brooding blackened doom. I'd like to recommend The Wounded Kings' The Shadow Over Atlantis record. It is filled with menacing wall of sound and huge guitar riffs.
