Captain Beefheart - Clear Spot

Definitely one of my favourite CB albums. Low Yo Yo Stuff is either about masturbation or anal sex. I can't quite decide which.

That along with Phosphene (which to me is pretty much the epitome of DsO) are the best tracks on that album.

Anyhow, I've been listening to Hvar, by Arstidir, an Icelandic band. Some of the most captivating, and for lack of a better word, "lovable", folk/neoclassical I've heard in recent times.

Morbid Angel - Summoning Redemption

The main groove in this is off the charts good.

Arachnid - The Witching

Bought the re-release from Stormspell. Right now I'm enjoying this song the most. All the Morbid Saint-conjuring chunky riffage and raspy vocals, but with a nice melodic and occult tinge to boot.

Endstille - Kapitulation 2013

I might only be on the second listen, but it seems less grating and more interesting than the other 2 Endstille albums I've heard.

Emperor - Into the Infinity of Thoughts

Having one of my bi-annual listens to Emperor to see if like them yet; everything sounds solid in theory, and I'm enjoying it more than I used to, but likewise, their place at the very top of black-metal is, I think, always going to baffle me.

Rush - Entre Nous

One of the more personal and beautiful songs I've ever heard actually. Just a gorgeous tune.

I've never enjoyed the production of that album.

Sodom - Magic Dragon

I've slowly been getting into the band, only made it up to the Agent Orange album so far, but every time I listen to it, I remember I need to explore more.

If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend checking out Tapping the Vein, it's definitely my favorite Sodom album. "The Crippler" is an absolute beast.

Overkill - Ironbound

Even if this song was 30 mins long, I'd still listen to it all the way through just for that scream at the end. Holy hell, man.

Pestilence - Obsideo

Hey this isn't half bad. Modern and full of groove but also has some cool, odd swinging riffs to offer. I might check the entire album soon.

Rhapsody - Angel of Light

Not great, but easily better than anything else they did. As in, it isn't annoying, hyperactive shit.

Grave Miasma

Man, this music feels so raw and primitive and just pure evil. I love the production as well, everything sounds amazing and the delay on the vocals is cool too. Excellent band.

The production is the main reason I don't think Anthems isn't essential.

Kreator- Flag of Hate the re-recorded version

So much better than Endless Pain's version. That tempo is just perfect for it!

Mogwai - Like Herod

If there's any song in the universe that dares you to get the cops called on you for disturbing the peace, it's this one. Must. Turn. Up. Louder.

When this album was rumoured to be released, after the excellent and well received demo, 7" and Enslaved split, there was quite a stir in the then underground, and speaking as someone who was around at this time, eagerly waiting for it to drop, it's hype was out of this world crazy. When it eventually was available, it blew minds due to the epic scope and power it evoked. Couple that with the members notoriety, obfuscated, and still quite raw production, dark, majestic, and sweeping song craft, a creation of otherworldly demonic delight was beheld - nothing else sounded like it really at that time.

Order Of Orias - Bleak One

This album is offering surprise after surprise. The slower tempos and being a slave to compounding, harmonically layered riffs that swell into commanding, dark mantras is damn good, as it sucks you under into the morass of serpentine coils. Bloody good stuff.

I remember the first time I listened to this. It was something like WTF?!?
Then, sloowly, you get used to and enjoy it.
It's, in fact, and incredible album.

This last one sounds like, yes, more accesible to me.

Watain - The Wild Hunt

There seems to be a fair amount of controversy surrounding this album although I personally think it's excellent. Sure, it sounds different than the likes of Rabid Death's Curse and Casus Luciferi but the aura of Watain is still completely intact and untainted. I don't mind when the audible tapestry of a band changes as long as there is a consistent wellspring of spirit and inspiration behind said changes so, indeed, The Wild Hunt slays.

Bathory - Home of Once Brave

The majesty of this song is hard to overstate. It tends not to be mentioned alot when brining up quality viking metal. It's not as varied and rocking as Shores in Flames or Valhalla, but the atmosphere is just amazing, you just let the bass and guitars wash over you with that pounding drum beat.
