I recall being reminded of so many things when listening to Aeternus. Anyhow, try Belenos' album Spicilege. It has somewhat similar riffing, minus the early Anathema influence, and with some folk/pagan elements.

I think it's also highly reminiscent of Christicide in certain ways.

Is there anyone here that could perhaps recommend me something comparable to the early Aeternus albums, namely Beyond The Wandering Moon and ... And So The Night Became? I have always found these particular recordings to be rather unique in that the atmosphere and feel is totally black metal whilst the guitars are pretty darn heavy without sounding like death metal guitars. Any insight would be appreciated!

Totally not black metal, but when I hear Aeternus' sophomore album I'm reminded of Runemagick's first few efforts. I know, it's weird. I guess it has something to do with that martial tone set by that first song.

Thank you for the recommendations guys, I am going to look into all of them. I have heard good things about Belenos for a while now but have never actually sat down and listened to anything.

I'm looking for a few things right now as far as BM. Does anyone have any suggestions for bands that are similar to Szron, Grifteskymfning, Yellow Eyes (besides Diminishing Light), and Gratzug? I like the fuzzy atmospheric guitars, I like all tempos, but mainly fast and aggressive, and I don't like a shit ton of keyboards.

Also, is there a band or are there bands out there that musically sound like Revenge, but with (for lack of a less offensive term) better vocals? I absolutely LOVE the aggression and constant blasts, but the vocals are so fucking off for me.

And please, no NSBM.

As for the first three ones, I'd guess Chaos Moon, and Satan's Almighty Penis (Yeah, although the name sucks, the band actually don't)
Also some things from Klabautamann and possibly Ekpyrosis (except for the Mensch Aus Gold album, which is somewhat different)
Curiously most of these bands even the ones you mentioned are from USA. I guess there may be more bands following that line on the american scene.

Actually, only two of the bands I mentioned are from the US (Yellow Eyes and Revenge), but that doesn't matter to me. I'm not going to lie, the only band that I liked was Chaos Moon, but they were super good, so I thank you!

Any more suggestions?

You probably already know them, as they're all well known and stuff.
But in case you don't, there's also Krallice and Wolves in The Throne Room.

@Edward K I only know Szron and Gratzug. New Szron and old Szron are very different, but here's a few less obvious bands that might work. Looking through my collection I'd say...

Aboriorth, Beastcraft, Demoncy (new album) Blodulv (sounds like old Szron) Eternal Majesty, Katharsis, Luror, Olc Sinnsir, Plaga, Zwartplaag. There's a lot of others like Horna, Behexen that I figure you already know about.

To Karlabos:
Yes, I know both of those bands, but I only like WITTR. Krallice's vocal style and overall music compositions just really didn't catch my ear.

To Sick6Six:

You need to listen to Grifteskymfning! They're fucking incredible. I haven't heard their demo, but either one of their full lengths will do for you. As for Szron, I like them as a whole, but I do enjoy their newer sound.

As far as your suggestions, I loved Aboriorth, Katharsis (I'm assuming you meant from Zwickau, Saxony) was fucking intense and chaotic and raw. Definitely a good Revenge "replacement" so to speak! Luror's vocals are way too far into the DSBM realm. The farthest I got into that is Gris. The other bands I enjoyed, but they didn't really pop out to me.

Horna is always a classic to me, as well.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Any more?

I listened to the Aeternus album some more, and it's amazing how much it sounds like The Silent Enigma at times. I stand by my recommendations of Christicide and Belenos due to the similarities in riffing style, although neither band is superficially similar. A tangentially similar band would be Grand Belial's Key and especially their third album Kosherat, as the guitars are quite heavy for a black metal release, and the style is strongly influenced by non-black metal genres.

It's interesting how much the double bass drums sound like the rumble of studded tires. If you've ever driven a car with studded tires, perhaps you can see the similarity. I like the sound, it reminds me of Demolition Hammer's Epidemic of Violence.

Yeah that is the correct Katharsis, forgot to mention that since there's a ton of bands with that name. Check out Lugubre (Netherlands) They are very aggressive and extremely overlooked IMO. Everything leading up to their last album had the raw, fuzzy sound you're looking for. Their new album is amazing, but they really upped the production. Also the first Koldbrann album "Nekrotisk Inkvisition" fits in with the Katharsis/Lugubre sound. I also really like Koldbrann's 2nd album, but their latest effort didn't do a lot for me.
Edit: I agree, Christicide sounds really good also, I listened to a bit of them after noticing their drummers solo band Suhnopfer.

Is there any bm (or actually any extreme metal) band with the same vocal style as Master's Hammer's on their last two albums? This is, Mantras and Vracejte Konve Na Misto?

Thanks a lot guys! I loved all three of those bands! Super aggressive, and just the right amount of raw sound! Now, I have another, more obscure request. Are there any bands out there that sound like Obolus? Preferably with the vocals not so buried...

What album should I start with for Vreid? I enjoy Windir's music. Especially the album 1184.

Although there are some similarities between Vreid and Windir, they're pretty different. Vreid is much more guitar oriented and has a interesting upbeat/rock 'n roll flavor rather than folk influences. I think their newest, Welcome Farewell, is by far their best. Amazing catchy riffs and fun tempo changes. My favorite song they've ever done:

Hmm I see what you mean. It's not what I think of when I think of black metal or Windir. It's good. It's more like black/thrash almost? Know any bands more like Windir?

Svarttjern is some very cold, hateful black metal. I definitely second Kaevum, their album Natur is excellent, hateful black metal with some beautiful melodies as well. It might not be NSBM outright, but the Aryan young women in their album covers and their logo shouldn't leave any doubt as to what kind of beliefs the band members hold. They are also affiliated with Darker Than Black records.

Here is a bit from an interview that should make things clear:
Spoiler: show
9) The artwork and maybe some lyrics seems a little bit ambiguous and some people quickly classified you has an NSBM band, can you clarify the things ? Is it only due to the lyrics theme or do you feel close to this kind of movement ? What do you think of this kind of expression in black metal music ?

I can see why we are labeled NSBM by so many, at first glance that would be my first impression too. However it is still not very correct as we have little to do with politics and at least nothing to do with socialism in any way. The only clear connection to NSBM would be the similarities in image concerning the display of natural strength and honour and of course anti-semitism which we would file under religion. With all of that being said our Image and artwork clearly is made to weed out all hippies, political correct or religious people from our listeners, not that we care som much but the whole point of Kaevum is to make art/music for those who will understand it and identify themselves with it.

10) We can see a woman on each of your productions (except the compilation). What does it mean ? What does she represent for you ?

The woman on the covers depicts our ideal and is a symbol of the ultimate beauty which lies within survival of the fittest, she also symbolises the natural development of the band and nature in general.

On my teabreak Baroque so cant go into much detail lol. These are a must- Mistur, Sigtyr, Cor Scorpii and Feigd, all very similar and come form the same area as Valfar, Sognadal. They also have Windir members in their ranks so easily should fit your request. Also check out Galar's debut same goes for Myrkgrav as well as the Vinland demo, these three are not carbon copies but all share similarities. This should get you started.

I 'll have to admit, Ilwhyan is right. When I first heard Kaevum and saw their imagery, It definitely threw up a red flag for me so I frantically searched and found that same interview, and when I saw them say they weren't NSBM I just stuck with that. However, sometimes you have to dig deeper into the meaning of things to find their true nature. I hold fast to my beliefs and don't have time to sit and try to make excuses for what is right in front of my face. However, for every NSBM/racist/Fascist band that I hate and ignore, there are literally hundreds of bands that don't support that shit that still fucking rule.

Flagellant - Maledictum
It's a step down from the debut album, but it's still quality black metal. I was quite disappointed with it, since the debut is quite incredible, and this new album can't even begin to compare to it, but it's still solid.

Phlegein - Silver Veins
One of the highlights of the year. I still prefer their earlier releases like Ancient Battlegrounds, but especially the latter half of this full-length is very good. Somewhat melancholy, contemplative black metal with drawn-out passages and some unique riffing, but enough aggression to not make it sound limp. A well-rounded album from an excellent band.

Sarkrista - The Acheronian Worship
A really well-received black metal debut this year. I'm not as enamoured with it as some here, but I think it's a good reiteration of the Taake/Satanic Warmaster or Horna sound.

Christicide - Upheaval of the Soul
This one is a good follow-up to the 2007 debut full-length. I haven't listened to it enough to make an analysis, but it's a good album.

Kirkebrann - Når Allt Dør
Seething stuff. It's worth a few listens, see if it clicks. It didn't make anything like an unforgettable first impression to me, but it's completely solid black metal.

Cosmic Church - Ylistys
This is one of the best album of 2013, and I know it even without having heard it yet!

Regarding Celestial Bloodshed, I must say I wasn't overly impressed with that album. It seems quite empty in terms of content especially towards the end. Svartsyn made a solid album though. I should take my time to listen to their discography more thoroughly one of these days.

Throne of Katharsis has releases a new album this year. I wonder if that's good.

Yellow Eyes has nice sounding production, but the first riff of that song is complete bollocks, at least.

I absolutely do. I've been stuck with the demos, including the new one from last year, but I'll get over it soon probably.

I've been listening to less music lately due to my earbuds being fixed, and the manufacturer is having problems finding spare parts. :(

Yes, the new Cosmic Church is fantastic. Really long songs and album, but the general pace is a bit quicker than their previous stuff, with more focus on drawn-out tremolo sections than the more slow-to-mid-paced chordy riffs featured heavily in some of their older material.

Another great one is the new Fyrnask album:

Hate to put in a request this vague, but, while I've been enjoying a handful of black metal records for about the last decade, I never got around to doing more than just dabbling in the world of black metal. I know I definitely enjoy its unique appeal when I find something that clicks with me, but it's hard to click with me since I'm pretty picky when it comes to my BM, so here's a rough list of my 10+ fave black records:

First 3 Emperors
At The Heart Of Winter/Sons Of Northern Darkness
Nemesis Divina
Everything 90's Dissection
Blood Fire Death
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Vaguely recall enjoying some Dark Fortress/1349 too, I think

I guess you could say the general features I'm looking for in my recs here are something a lil' more intricate, proactive, melodic, epic, or "hook-y" than the traditionally raw sort of black metal; not at all interested in something with that super-thin, shrill, dentist drill-guitar production of say, Under A Funeral Moon. Not interested in anything super-repetitive/droning or with flat riffage, either; y'know, something catchier, kind of! Don't be afraid to rec "mainstream" BM either, since, for example, I never even got around to checking out guys like Enslaved. And though I won't say no outright, I'm not super-interested in blackened death, black/folk, black/Viking, black/whatever; pure black will take priority here.

First of all, I would very much like to tell you that you might underestimate how intricate, melodic, pro-active underground/raw black metal can be. I find it funny that you name 1349, cause they have a fair share of bleak recordings as well. Here some examples that might lead you into discovering more bands. Anyway, here are some bands that might be to your liking:

Smalley, you might want to check out Valoton. Their riffs are more intricate than the typical Darkthrone style, and they've got hooks to spare without sacrificing their evil sound. Another gem from 2010 is Flagellant's debut full-length Monuments. Evil, utterly dark, atmospheric and quite intricate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCb0mE2B_6s

You also might want to revisit Gorgoroth's sophomore and third album. Especially Antichrist should fit your request, aside from thes ong possessed by Satan perhaps. Under the Sign has a couple of songs that should fit perfectly as well, though the sound is much rawer. Especially songs like Krig, Funeral Procession and Ødeleggelse og Undergang.

Speaking of good bm this year, has anyone listened to the czech band Cult of Fire? http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Cu ... %A8/390747
There seems to be lots of raving reviews about their latest album. It comes out this saturday but I think there are some tracks put up by Iron Bonehead for streaming.

Indeed I have, awesome band. The debut album was quite a surprise so I have had my eye on this new one. They remind me of Masters Hammer in places.

I've listened to the debut. Unfortunately, it failed to make much of an impression.

Yeah, I hated the older stuff, but the new album is fucking great. I love the mix of hindu/mystical sounds with their music.

I haven't listened to their previous stuff but the imagery and themes of this latest one seem quite fantastic. I dunno how many bands apart from Rudra have tackled this hindu mythology business in black metal. Slightly over the top but I hope that doesn't take away too much from the music. I'll definitely check this out when it gets releases.

Is there anything out there, anything that comes close to later-era Limbonic Art? What I mean is, keys used tastefully, generally abrasive and heavy riffs (for black metal), and melodies that border on absurdly dissonant? I'll post a vid for reference.
