Psychrist is brilliant. They have some absolutely fantastic riffing that is quite unusualy for death metal of their style. Uncompromising, brutal and beautiful.

Can anyone give me a list of some awesome old school sounding death metal bands? I keep going through these phases where I find a bunch, and then I hit a wall, and I can't find any. Some of my favorites right now (to give you an idea) are Funebrarum, Corpsessed, Wormridden, Carnal Ghoul, Lawless, Cemetery Urn, Coffins, Disma, Incantation, Cianide, Grave, Mold, Monomakh, Voids of Vomit, Vasaeleth.

Someone might bother compiling a list, but the purpose of these threads is to bring more specific recommendations to requesters. You have not even specified whether there were some you did not particularly like, and for what reasons.

I don't mean to sound shitty, but if I were to talk about all the bands I didn't like and why, it would take the rest of the day, if not more. That's why I included bands that I like to see if anyone knows any bands that are similar.

I don't like high pitched vocals (Asphyx, Ataraxy, Obituary, etc.), but I don't want to listen to 3-4 minutes of someone burping into a mic either. I like a fuzzy deep sound that's fast and aggressive sounding, but not straight up raw sounding.

CrushedRevelation, thanks for pointing me towards what you've said, but most of what was pointed out, I've heard, and didn't care for. Does anyone have anything else?

Hence, as I said, we usually prefer more specific requests, as well as ones that the requester was willing to put effort into. Incidentally, very broad, general request are against the guidelines as well.

I apologize for being too base with my request, but you didn't have to jump on me for it. I'm not new to the site, but I'm a new member and I'm still getting the feel for it.

Anyway, if my last post wasn't too vague, do you have any suggestions? I'm not asking for a list of 20+ bands, just a few that I could get into.

I didn't intend to come across as antagonistic. I'm merely trying to relate my view of how requests should be handled here, so please don't take offence. We're all friends here.

Have you checked out Desolate Shrine or Maveth? Those are some of the most crushing modern death metal bands, both of which draw eagerly from the old style, even as far back as when black metal didn't effectively exist as a separate entity from death metal. And another Finnish band, Lantern, are quite experimental and strange (and thus a little divisive), but worth hearing for what kind of things can be done in death metal. It reminds me of the last two Autopsy albums.

Cruciamentum? Thick, abrasive guitar tone, reminiscent of the old Swedish sound. Some of the riffs are more modern, but the atmosphere is thick and oppressive. If you like the modernised Swede thing, check out Undergang, it's an immensely heavy take on Swedish death metal. Nirvana 2002 is also one of those classic bands. Again, swedeath, but with a very oppressive atmosphere.

Rottrevore is like early brutal death metal, with much of that old school vibe that modern bands are emulating.

Gorephilia might sound like derpy brutal death metal band name, but the music is very atmospheric, sinister and oppressive, and I definitely recommend their music. Corpsessed is not quite as good as most of the bands you mentioned, but they're always worth checking out. Krypts is another young Finnish band that isn't quite as essential as some other bands.

I LOVED Maveth, who unbeknownst to me, has members of Cryptborn (another band that I love) in it! I also really enjoyed Desolate Shrine. Cruciamentum is a band that I've heard before, and while it was pretty enjoyable, it just didn't grab my attention a whole lot. Undergang is another band that I love. Totally filthy and heavy! And if you haven't listened to them, check out David Torturdød's other bands Wormridden and Reefer.

Nirvana 2002 has a really grimy sound that was really awesome, but the vocals were too high pitched for my taste. Lantern was definitely interesting to listen to. Not the most amazing thing I've heard, but definitely holds my attention, and deserves digging deeper. Rottrevore is just fucking classic! Gorephilia was okay as well, not something I'm super into. And you're right about their name by the way. If you wouldn't have said anything, I would've thought them out to be some "Slammin Brutal Death Metal/Cybergrind" bands, which is funny because the name they used to go by was even worse! And last, Krypts is another band I recently got into and I love them as well.

Thanks a lot for the recs! Although to be honest, only thing new for me was Ruin Lust, which was a great find! Really grimy sounding! And their drummer is also in Fell Voices who I love as well. Witchrist is fucking amazing, I just heard about them a little bit ago, and yes, I am familiar with Altars, although I think Monomakh is better. Obliteration and Vorum I just couldn't get into because the vocals are too high. Which is a shame because musically Vorum is amazing, but I'd be a liar if I said I could get into it.

Hey guys I am just now really venturing over to death metal, I usually listen to a lot of black but ever since Nation Despair released their new album I have been wanting do get into death. I guess this stuff is melodic death metal, anything similar you guys know about? I also really like the song Dethroned on that same album but I cannot find a video of it on youtube.

Insomnium is an obvious one and a similar style of melodic death metal. Another Finnish band and one of the most highly regarded melodic death metal bands.

Haha! That's like asking for christian black metal or straight edge stoner doom. Sure it exists, but who wants to hear it? There are a lot of bands for me that make me happy without sounding happy. I find joy in the negativity. However, your best bet would be to look into bands that don't really sound happy, but put in a lot of humor in their music such as Cannabis Corpse or Crotchduster.

There are a few that try. They're technically black metal.

Arghoslent's Hornets of Pogrom is irritatingly positive and uplifting. Anata also has uplifting passages, and they're quite beautiful.

Death metal is very rarely happy, it's true. The happiest major bands are probably Amorphis (early), Edge of Sanity and the groovy bands like Entombed. Debauchery is quite cheerful, but I'm absolutely not going to recommend them.

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris will inevitably get mentioned so may as well do it.

Its a real unique album with a sort of brutal-progressive dm thing going on but they use a lot of exotic scales and major progressions which give it a really uplifting feel.

I've been obsessed with Infester's To the Depths, in Degradation lately. It's the combination of riffs, vocals, and filthy atmosphere that does it for me. Can anyone point me to other DM albums that are similar in tone and style?

I also like negative stuff. But I also like weird, controversial experiments in music, bands that do what they're just not meant to. That's why I'd like to hear such a thing as happy death metal =p

Is Rottrevore too obvious? They don't quite have that absolutely fucking disgusting tinge to the vocals that Infester do, and the riffs are a little more bludgeoning and without that sort of occult, blackened vibe, but it's still the same sorta ballpark I think:

Maybe also Imprecation - Theurgia Goetia Summa. They have a similarly thick but blackened tone to their riffs.

I'm looking for death metal with a "rock and roll" sound to it. Metal that focuses more on the groove than the blast, and doesn't go for the chaotic all-over-the-place sound. Six Feet Under, for example.

Vocals are important. I want them to be appropriately dark and evil and whatnot.
I have also tried Entombed, Jungle Rot, and Baphotmet but didn't like the vocals enough to stick to it.

I just want to point out the obvious and mention Carcass - Swansong. It's a rock album in death metal guise, though I'm not sure if you will find the vocals menacing enough.

Obviously the vocals are straight up black metal screeches, but every time I hear that opening riff I think of Foghat. SLOOOOOOW RIIIIIIIIIIIDE.

There's Scrambled Defuncts, and the newer albums of Fleshgod Apocalypse.
Also the symphonic black metal band Lyfthrasyr uses (or used to use) both death metal grows and death metal-like riffs, so maybe it fits your requirements.

Damn right there is such thing as symphonic death metal. In my opinion it is one of the most exceptionally talented genres in metal, and (like all metal) vastly underappreciated. I'll link to select songs that demonstrate the band's best skills, as opposed to recommending entire albums.

I'm looking for particular sounding death/thrash recommendations. I really dig the early Solstice (US) sound. The production is muddy (essential for me) and the playing style has really cool chugging with some balls in it. Don't want to associate the word 'groovy' here but yeah, it's groovy.
