"Paranoid" is simply 'fast' punk rock or proto-punk for that matter. It's not quite metallic. It could easily have been an MC5 or The Stooges song..

What on earth is punk about Paranoid? The typical punk song is I-IV-V-IV, or just I-IV.

Yea. It's the first proto-punk composition that discarded standard progression. "Endless Vacation" by Ramones is another example of unconventional pattern. Later Soundgarden and Melvins wrote tons of punk-metal hybrid shit with radical structure.

If one shortish rock song is proto-punk, then so are ALL other short rock songs.

Quite a shitload of albums/songs could give the usual Sabbath/Purple/Heep/Budgie (Zeppelin can't really compare, as much as I dig them) standards of early heaviness, a run for their money. These are some of the ones that come to mind.

1970-
Sir Lord Baltimore- Kingdom Come. Already arguably considered an early Metal album.

Randy Holden- Population II. This track in particular is very doomy and comparible with a slightly less heavy Sabbath or Pentagram.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWb9xuHSaBw

Lucifers Friend- S/T Takes the Zeppelin riff to near NWOBHM realms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVpe13BwR9c

1971-
Toad-S/T. A much more heavier Zeppelin type vibe. This song in particular has riffing closer to Iommi than Page.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUJMeyDbYoM

Boulder Damn- Dead Meat. Some unquestionable Doom riffs in this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtKQnUaIGak

Blues Creation- Demon and Eleven Children. More Bluesy than Flower Travellin Band but certainly heavier than most bands of the time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUaCI3ZSJxM

Too Much-S/T. Very inconsistent album with some spectacular tracks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV-BiCwfaSU

1972-
Jericho-S/T Here we go. Truly killer early NWOBHM vibe here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK-boH0DkYs

Jerusalem- S/T Very dope sludgy shit. This track in particular was certainly a contender.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QclSTWfJrk

Tiger B. Smith- Tiger Rock. The NWOBHM sound a decade before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_bTWLzBRII

Night Sun- Mournin'. Whole album is a masterpiece. Faster and oddly more technical than a lot of the bands then, though this track has an undeniable Sabbath vibe and fits this thread perfectly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ9Tv0bS5lE

1973-
Buffalo- Volcanic Rock. Doesn't get any badder than this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGxflt2mbpA

Of course there's plenty of other contenders, not to mention the hundreds of Prog bands of the day who had occasionally groundbreaking heavy segments sprinkled through certain songs.

I'm already familiar with Sir Lord Baltimore and Lucifer's Friend but that shit is in a league of its own. God damn it's heavy as balls proto-stoner/doom. Thanks for posting man!

Didn't see this one posted. But here is one from 1974 that had to be pretty damn heavy for its time and the solo...really good song.

Bedemon-Serpent Venom

No love for Randy Holden and this '71 proto doom masterpiece? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnya439X ... ata_player
Easily one of the heaviest songs of the 70s!

And what of False Prophet and this '76 heavy rock/punk piece? When kids think of 70s metal, this OS the kind of thing that comes to mind: uptempo heavy bluesy raw hard rock and roll played with abandon and tinges of psychedelia.

Ah, Holden was mentioned.....

I always saw some influence of surf rock (dick dale, etc) in metal. I'm on my phone atm, might post something specific later.
