^ I agree, it's some of my favorite stuff from him. All the people who says he can't write music should check out his country, it rocks.

Just a little bump, as I am drinking some Jim Beam and playing some acoustic guitar and I have work tomorrow, but it's Friday!

It's always amusing to me how most of us here have an extremely picky taste when it comes to music, yet we end up agreeing on music outside of metal. Hank Williams Sr. is pretty good. I used to live in western Kentucky and, needless to say, my best friend introduced me to him when I was around eight years old. "A Country Boy Can Survive" is catchy as all hell.

More whiskey and more country tonight. To be precise, Macallan 18 and the Statler Brothers :)

I've been listening to a lot of Ernest Tubb and Junior Brown lately. As old school as it can get. And you can't beat Johnny Paycheck and Waylon Jennings for 70's classic country sounds.

Travis Tritt- "T-R-O-U-B-L-E". Pretty badass as far as country songs go.

The only Country I had liked, 'till recently anyways, was The Eagles. Well, technically they're Country Rock, but still.
My grandma likes Country music alot & listens to it dayly, so I've heard alot country, from classics like Jonny Cash to newcommers like Bon Jovi. Until recently, I've always hated them.
I have been interested to hear some HWIII, but I haven't ever gotten to aside from the one time I tried looking for his one Doom Metal album.
I also really enjoy this odd Country Metal fusion band called Rebel Meets Rebel.

I'll go ahead and put myself on the Johnny Cash and Hank 3 bandwagon. I do have a soft spot for Jimmy Buffet and Garth Brooks due to the stuff my mom played when I was a kid but I never got around to venturing further.

What I hate, as you mentioned yourself, is the "shitty excuse" for country, that plague the mainstream these days, country is practically dead, only Hank III is kinda keeping it alive.

Amen dude! Hank 3 is cool as hell, just saw him recently in Pennsylvania, keeping outlaw country alive!

I listened to country when I was younger, though I never really got very deep into it. The only three albums I still own are all popular-level country stuff: Red and Rio Grande by Doug Supernaw, Storms of Life by Randy Travis, and a greatest hits thing by Garth Brooks.

While I'm not a fanatic I do enjoy a good amount of country music from the originals/innovators (Hank Williams, Carter Family, Jimmie Rogers, etc) to honky tonk/outlaw (David Allan Coe, Willie Nelson, etc) to some of the pop country from the early 90's (Tim McGraw's first couple, Sawyer Brown, Brooks and Dunn, etc). It stops there though. Somewhere in the mid to late 90's it spiraled too far into pop territory. Garth Brooks is partially to blame for this I think, but he wasn't alone. I mean listen to Tim McGraw's new song with Taylor swift. Why pretend this is country music still?

i like Matt Mays, sorta country-ish/rock from Canada, has a good balance...not too much cowboy bullshit to lose the rock crowd, but enough to still technically be called country...saw him a few months ago, was a great show. saw Hank III a few years ago, another awesome show, but I didn't dig his other band Assjack...tight riffing but im not a hardcore fan, anyways I digress...

Hell yeah. My favourites are Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt as well as 21st-century alt-country acts like Ryan Bingham, Drive-By Truckers, Chris Knight, Hank3 and Matraca Berg (technically she started in the early 90s but she's only recently got back into country music with two amazing albums).

While much of mainstream country music is pretty bad, there's good stuff out there - Brad Paisley is worth checking out if you can stomach a lot of goofball 'humour', and Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood have both done good stuff here and there.

I love country music. At least how it's traditionally defined, I don't much care for the slick, pop-ish, manufactured stuff that is front and center. Real country music done well has a certain magic to it. It's laid-back, un-pretentious, teeming with emotion, sort of exists in it's own world, and it's totally comfortable with that.

One thing I like about it is that it sort of exudes a humility about it that I find refreshing. It's not about bling-age (a complaint that I have with some radio-ready stuff), it's not about showing off or boasting. It's not concerned with what's in-fashion.

Some country that I like includes:

Merle Haggard (the last concert I went to, btw)

Randy Travis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s9q4An6rMA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffo3yKFjYmA

There's still people making good, modern stuff also. It's unfortunate that it's been almost completely pushed out of the mainstream.

Jamey Johnson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYGwxf1gCC4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyHdq550q0s

Ashley Monroe (a recent discovery, she's in a Miranda Lambert side project)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N386iSk-AGU (mid-tempo upbeat)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgJeHFNjL6k (ballad)

Chris Knight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY9BFrDLZFY (a rock-tinged song)

There's also a pretty decent blog devoted to traditional country and americana.

country goes as deep as metal, when I feel better another day I"ll come here and annihilate with what I've learned growing up with country musicians of days of old, I think the best stuff like metal is relegated to the fanatics, past the golden age that is, the polished turds float to the surface, as is expected

Country is a genre I don` t know as much about as I` d like to. I` ve heard some great stuff by Cash and Willie Nelson over the years, but I don` t know much about the other guys around that time. I can` t stand modern country music, so naturally, everyone in my family loves it. I heard a lot of Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson in my childhood, and it didn` t take long for me to get tired of it. Nearly two decades later, not much has changed, with entire car rides playing nothing but country radio. The whole southern thing gets old fast and it gets way too preachy with songs about America and Jesus. It` s more akin to pop music, with big choruses and easy on the eyes men and women populating most of what I hear. It shows that the genre is more interested in making beautiful people superstars than making good music. I don` t want to dismiss an entire genre because I` m sure there` s plenty of great singer-songwriters just waiting to be heard, but that` s not what` s getting airplay.

Really stoked about this thread. I've been pretty obsessed with the music of Townes Van Zandt over the last year, and I know scattered songs from the other "classic" artists, but there's a lot to digest posted here. Looking forward to it.

Not all 90s radio country sucks:

John Anderson - Seminole Wind

And skimming this thread, I didn't see any Doc Watson. His version of Omie Wise introduced me to tragedy and darkness as a small child and has, in hindsight, had an overall immense influence on my life. Folk not country I guess, but whatever.

Do any of you think that traditional country will come back? Or will it be completely supplanted by pop, and rock sounds, until it's nearly indistinguishable from other genres?

One thing I don't like about a lot of radio stuff, is that it revels in stereotypes. Exaggerated southern accents, songs about back roads, pickup trucks, beer, stuff like that. There have always been a few songs that sung about that stuff in a sarcastic way, but they seem to be totally serious singing it.

It's more like what suburbanites and city people think country music is like, cranked up to 11.

Merle Haggard isn't southern.

The only real country song I like is the Zac Brown band with their song "Sic 'em on a Chicken".

Marty Robbins is probably my favorite. His storytelling was unrivaled in my opinion.

He also wrote the best song about jesus i've ever heard:

Country is my third least favorite genre ever, only beaten by Rap (who is second) and Pop (first). I just can't stand it. Southern accents have always gotten on my nerves, the happy melodies, poor musicianship, lack of complexity, and overall simplicity of the genre is something I just don't like. Not to mention the lyrics.

Maybe this is just modern country though; I really don't know how to differentiate between the newer stuff and older stuff just by hearing it.

When done right, I consider country music to be the equivalent of American folk music, much like Celtic or Chinese type music. But yea, modern country is just so watered down by auto-tune and ex-boyfriends who don't pay attention to you anymore.

However, if southern accents annoy you, you probably won't like me too much. Most of the time I can repress it without effort, but I also don't think anyone notices it because they are so used to it.
