I wanna see WELL filmed atrocious live performances. I can enjoy crappy filmed ones too but there's something funny about spending so much money into a well shot concert and just fucking it up.

Take a look at 19:29 on this Celtic Frost concert. It's fucking awesome, hahaha! Best guitar solo ever, and the drummer looks so stupid!! Ha!!!!!

I can't say I have much to contribute, but I must say the thread title made me chuckle out loud.

That ridiculous live video Nader Sadek did. The female vocals at the beginning already had me facepalming, but then to have the drummer facing the band, basically in the crowd? wtf. Speaking of the crowd, nobody seems to be into it. Also, Tucker's "wig" falls off at some point about midway through and the camera pans away in an exaggerated fashion.

Funny because the first thing I thought of was Led Zeppelin at Live Aid...so bad the band refused to let them put it on the DVD but it ended up on Youtube eventually. Jimmy Page is drunk/strung out, Robert Plant has a mullet and his voice cracks on like every note and Phil Collins is drumming.

Obligatory mention of Children of Bodom deciding to get drunk before live where Laiho has to play probably the most difficult song he has ever written (Kissing the Shadows).

Dragonforce had a pretty bad one a while back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlYe_g0BkGY

The fall at the beginning is the best part.

Both my entires are drummer related. First, Impending Doom doing More Than Conquerors with apparently a fill in drummer a few years back who could not play double bass to save his life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUKDM70lSzw

Second, Vital Remains's second-to-most recent live drummer Albert Allende just in general could not play the material. It affected the rest of the band, and that combined with the awful levels in this soundboard audio and the pitiful vocals shows just how fucking wretched they were live just a couple years ago.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that famous clip of Venom slopping and sucking their way through Black Metal. Still good to go back to for a laugh every so often.

No audio of this, but in 2006, I want to say, Vital Remains toured with Deicide. The only songs played were from Dechristianize, and they were played at about 2/3 speed. Tim Yeung was on drums, and he was about as good as that Allende guy. Suzuki's leads were good, I guess. I couldn't hear any of them over the horribly inconsistent CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK of the bass drum.

Maybe Yeung was sick or something, but I was stunned that a guy who can apparently play so many beats per minute with his feet was so unspeakably bad at songs at 2/3 speed. He was worse than some of the opening acts.

A lot of those speed contest drummers are really bad at playing actual music, not to mention that a startling number of speed drummers, even those that play in bands, just plain cannot play slower. Yeung at the time according to MA had only been in one other band as a legit live player at the time (Nile three years prior), so either he was really, really shitty at playing slower back then or there was a TON of studio magic done to him on the Hate Eternal, Aurora Borealis, Council of the Fallen, and Decrepit Birth albums he played on before that.

Or maybe he was just having a shitty day. We all do at one time or another.

This Skitsystem performance in Poland is just terrible. They're just so damn drunk and the bassist/singer kicks their guitarist in the nuts at the end of the video. "No speed, no punk!"

Oh yeah I like that one too. I like Mantas "running towards the camera" move, haha!

Bizarrely enough I saw Yellowcard last night and they were phenomenal. I've been looking at a lot of their videos today, and it's a strange coincidence this is the first time I've seen anyone link to them.

Angra at Rock in Rio a couple years ago had the double whammy of awful sound and horrible vocals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTvKZxZtabw

While we're on the subject of performances being ruined by shitty sound, nearly EVERYONE at Bloodstock this year who was on the stream had abysmal sound. Special mention goes to Dark Funeral and Hell being so unbalanced that the vocals kept fluctuating between just barely audible and not audible at all.

I found this video of Sadistik Exekution playing recently and it's by far the worst thing I've ever heard. The guitar sounds terrible. I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to take this seriously.

I love their first couple albums, but man...that is fucking awful. Seems like they should really give it up.

I remember seeing some hilarious old footage of an Ancient (Nor) show where everything seemed to go wrong. Bad fire breathing, a fire on the stage that burned through the guitar cable, and probably more I can't remember. I can't find the footage on youtube anymore though. Anyone have it or a link?

Damn, this is tough to watch. I saw them in early 2010 in London, and he was pretty good then as far as I remember. That said, it was a small club gig not a huge stadium show: don't know if that'd make any difference. His performance on their live album is brilliant. Thing is though, his voice noticeably deteriorated in some ways through their albums: compare his range on something like Fourth Legacy to the last album they did with him. I liked how the writing shifted to match his failing range, but it's pretty sad. I still don't really know what happened with that guy...

And now for one of my favorite horrible live performances. Some South American group covering Evil Dead by Death.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjTQChepBCg

It's as if they're all covering a different song at the same time.

Great thread! I especially enjoyed the Skitsystem, Angra and Sad Ex vids. I saw this Bal-Sagoth video recently and it is definitely worthy of this thread, I think:

A TALE-AH! FROM THE DEEP-AH! AHWOODS-AH!

Whatever happened to Bal-Sagoth? It's like they just sort of dropped from the face of the earth a while back.

--

Cradle of Filth at Rock am Ring 2006 was one of the things that introduced me to the band, and I loved it when I was 15 just because I had never heard these songs before. Nowadays I view it as a goddamned train wreck, almost entirely due to the horrible vocals, both male and female. Dani's voice was just about at their worst here, sounding like a wheezing cat most of the time, and Sarah Deva just plain stunk, particularly during Her Ghost in the Fog and whenever she had to sing in a higher register for Nymphetamine. Painful, embarrassing performance, and it's an absolute miracle that they've turned their live performances around as much as they have. Just shows what getting a new drummer, losing your shitty female singer and changing your own vocal technique will do.

I actually like that bal-sagoth video. Byron totally sells being a badass, walking out still chewing gum while he is doing vocals. The mix is a bit of a mess though.

Ancient has always struck me as a band that tries WAY too hard at the whole black metal thing. They keep going for being super grim and yet always come off as very amateurish and goofy.

seeing Jesu and Nadja live really put me off their music. Jesu relied too much on pre-recorded music and Nadja just kinda sucked.

Yeah, the Bal-Sagoth one isn't TOO bad, but if anyone brings that performance down, it's Byron. Don't get me wrong, I love those guys and that video displays what great musicians they all are, but Byron is doing his goofy Hetfield thing, and his delivery is way off. I know he doesn't usually do all the lyrics live, but some of it was so goofy. "The ravens are on the wing tonight tonight they areahhh!".

Angra is one of my favorite bands, but I don't think I've ever seen a good live video of them, even back when they still had what's his face on vocals. The vocals are always off key, the playing is always sloppy. Disappointing.

As far as Roy Khan goes, I just don't think he had it in him anymore. There's a live DVD I've seen where he sounds pretty great, but I'm sure it's been touched up. Such a shame, his performances from Conception to Kamelot are some of my favorite vocals ever.

So incredibly half-arsed. The "Pit" of about 3 cracked me up, as did the banter before they played Scrolls of the Megilloth. He might as well have added that he was wearing an onion from his belt, as was the style of the time...
