Apparently, it was scat porn. So, yeah. Don't jerk off to people shitting on each other while at work, guys.

He wasn't actually wanking, it seems. Still, scat porn. As Subrick said, he's lucky he wasn't fired.

Audacity. It's a free wav editor and recording program, pretty good too. Your quality will depend mainly on the mic you use.

The new Solstice EP is so fucking good. It's like a thunderbolt straight from hell. True titanic warrior metal at its best.

I feel like I'm breaking a law every time I light up a cigarette in my apartment. My parents were always extremely conservative growing up, and they would have had a stroke if they ever caught my older brother smoking in the house.

Xlxlxlxlxlxlxlxlxlx - if you're serious about recording spoken word, get a Blue Snowball and pop filter. Great, extremely high quality USB mic for like $60 bucks. Use mine for everything. Three settings, and one of them is specifically for spoken word.

I was looking at apartments recently and it came down between a first or third-floor room...I really wanted the third-floor (as I have a child-like fascination with living high off the ground) but the two people moving out were evidently HEAVY smokers, and the entire room reeked. Shame.

So how does one even get to the point of smoking regularly? Forgive me if I'm being especially stupid right now, but doesn't your first inhale of cigarette smoke make you cough like crazy? How about the second inhale? or the 10th? Smoking doesn't feeling good at first (does it?), so I can't see how you would battle through the first couple of horrid cigarettes only to get to the (previously unknown) good part.

Now, slaughter me for my ignorance.

I don't get it either, I guess because I've done harder drugs and I really know what a buzz is, cigs just don't cut it for me. They make my lips feel numb and they taste like fucking shit. I never get anything out of it, so I don't see the point? What is the point of an addiction if there is no pleasure? I guess I understand the repetition part of having to light 'em up after a meal or getting off work or whatever, but is that it? Really?

Smoking is pleasurable. I assure you guys are in the minority when you say they aren't good. Nicotine and caffeine and nicotine and alcohol are two of the best combinations one can get. The taste is acquired, but it's not different than drinking. I never had a bad cigarette inhale. Even the first one. You cough if you inhale it like a joint - but I always found it easy and pleasurable. It allows one to be pensive - to pause between words, to have thoughts drift with the smoke. I dunno. It's bad for you, but it's relaxing and very enjoyable.

Well I have a cigarette machine and I buy pipe tobacco. I don't smoke factory made cigarettes because of the additives. Pipe tobacco is very cheap and a much nicer smoke. $10 for 6 ounces of tobacco lasts a long time. If you are a smoker I suggest the investment in a cigarette machine.

I also don't smoke weed.

I smoke a pipe (only for the most hipster of reasons, I assure you) and it's quite nice. I got my pipe from my dad, who hadn't smoked it in years, and honestly I was pretty stunned by how cheap tobacco for it was. It's mostly to do with taxation apparently, as it's taxed differently from cigarettes. Anyway yeah, it's quite nice now and then, and at least for me, not at all addictive. I smoke a pipe maybe once a week or so, when I'm in the mood.

My mom and my sister smoke, although the latter had to stop because she got pregnant (again). I've never smoked a single cigarette in my life. Never seen the appeal and I don't think I ever will.

I really enjoy smoking. I’m obviously addicted to nicotine, but I've always liked the physical act of smoking. The taste, the texture of the smoke, the tactile sensation of exhaling. Sitting on a balcony or porch late at night with some cigarettes and a book is pretty much my favorite thing ever. I know a lot of people eventually get to a point where they want to quit because they don’t get much pleasure from smoking anymore but I’ve never gotten there, which is vaguely troubling for my future prospects of quitting. I’ll definitely have to use those e-cigarettes when I get around to it.

While I certainly understand the appeal of smoking, I just find it to be kind of a shitty habit overall (not to mention an expensive one, at least here). I simply don't like the idea of spending money to slowly wreck your lungs.

However, Failsafeman's mention of pipe smoking has me thinking..... Is there a difference between cigarretes and pure tobacco? Regarding the way they affect your health, that is.

Pipe tobacco has no additives so you're not smoking chemicals.

I agree with a lot of this, especially the combination of nicotine and alcohol. I don't smoke regularly, but after a few beers or shots I crave a cigarette. I know guys who've quit smoking but at parties will bum a smoke or two because having alcohol in their system is still an incentive. Speaking of, cigarettes can give you a chance to step outside during the party either alone or to talk with a bud.

I've undoubtedly coughed a couple times from cigarette inhale but never uncontrollably. And yup, the first time went smoothly as well. You'll definitely cough if you smoke it like a joint, as Frog said. That's why lots of people hate spliffs, but if you're used to inhaling tobacco smoke they aren't a problem. Also, as far as smoking more than a pack a day or chain-smoking, I don't personally see myself getting to that extent.

Henkkjelle, it looks like you're talking about chain-smoking. Just one cigarette will give you a buzz, so you needn't immediately smoke another. Even at multiple packs a day one might space each out. This depends though. When drinking heavily, I'm more prone to having cigarette-after-cigarette, because my senses have been numbed and I'm enjoying myself. Repeated exposure to this could probably lead to becoming a chain-smoker. That's one way, at least. And, of course, you get used to them after awhile. After having one a day for a short period of time you'll probably be able to handle more. When I start smoking after about a month or more hiatus, the first cigarette is usually harsh, but then it gets easy again after that. And in response to your question about feeling good at first; well, I think the first time it's overwhelming. The first nicotine rush I had was way more powerful than the rest. We're talking super sluggish and so light-headed it's almost unenjoyable. But it wasn't unenjoyable enough to deter having a second and that rush was much more suppressed. I don't know what the general consensus is on that but that was my experience.

As far as addiction in concerned, I've never gotten "addicted," but I have impulses depending on the circumstances, like the aforementioned drinking. I think cigarette addiction is situational (I purposely withhold the word nicotine because I think the addiction stretches beyond that one substance and extends to the act of having a cigarette. This disregards snuff and pipe tobacco but I've never done the former or got into the latter, and I can only speak from experience). For example, before going into a movie, if I have an extended break, or while waiting for someone, I'll get the urge to smoke. I'm able to control that and I'll go weeks sometimes without smoking, so I don't think addiction applies to me. The most I'll ever have in one day is a pack, but that's rare. This'll sound wimpy to regular smokers but I can usually make a pack last up to a week. I don't make it a habit and never plan to.

Edit:

Remember, though, that tobacco naturally has some nicotine in it. But because pipe tobacco lacks the other chemicals it won't be as bad for you, and it's a hell of a lot smoother.

Personally, I've been smoking on-and-off since I was 17 years old (I'm 22 now). I did cough A LOT the first time I hit a cigarette. Like PhilosophicalFrog said: you really only cough if you hit 'em like joints. You have to draw the smoke in through your lips and kinda hold it for a brief moment before inhaling (lightly, I should add). As far as my habit over the years... I would basically only smoke when I was hanging out with other people, so I'd have on average maybe five or six a month. Then it progressed to a couple per day after myself and my closest friends all turned of legal age to purchase them. I was extremely conservative about it in the beginning, though. I knew I would get addicted in time, but I limited myself to slow the process of dependency down. I would stop smoking entirely for months at a time, then I'd get unusually stressed/depressed over the general bullshit we all deal with in life, then I'd light up a cigarette and feel like I just flipped a switch on in my brain. It's hard to explain to anyone who doesn't smoke, but I honestly do feel the nicotine helps me get my life back on track when I'm at "rock bottom" and I'm struggling to find motivation.
