I finished the guitars a few days ago, ended up being longer than I planned but that's ok. Have many of the drum parts done in my head but still have to play along to the midi I made. Got some keyboard parts in mind but won't actually write them until drums/guitars are recorded.

I'd be much easier if I could have a vocalist do it for me and I just laid everything down beforehand for the person.

Hey, I could likely provide vocals (as soon as I get this bastard mic to work, that is), if you provided lyrics and where best to place them.

On another topic, guise, I was thinking of dishing out a small amount of coin for a compilation cover from Georgi over at Moon Ring Design, if there's enough submissions.

Just have to write the lyrics and record vocals for two songs tonight and maybe make a few polishing touches and I'll have my submissions ready. I may try to get a third in if I can.

If I can get myself proper recording equipment (I made another thread recently on this) I'll be making something... so hopefully I do!

Hey, it's black metal so the quality doesn't have to be good. Get Reaper and a $10 mic.

I have a rough skeleton and lyrics, but far from finished.

Well shit. So I wrote my song and sketched out some lyrics over the past week, felt it was going in a decent direction. Today I picked up my guitar, which I haven't touched in months, and it's not really working. Mind you, I can't play worth shit and know very little about the mechanics of the instrument but I'm pretty sure the intonation on the 2 lowest strings (or do guitar players call those the top? I dunno, the lowest in pitch) is fucked. I can tune to open E and A fine but once I play up half an octave or so they are both out of tune.

I'm gonna fuck around and see what I can do, but this might be a problem. I dealt with this on another old shitty guitar a while back but it had those little screws connected to the strings in a place I could access them, on this one they right under the bridge so ehhh, we'll see.

I have several good riffs and a rough structure, still need to write drum parts and complete arrangements. Not sure if I'm going to write lyrics as I think the music very much has the feel of my theme, and I really like the idea of creating the theme without using lyrics to do so.

I've been trying to get a different drum setup since I realized I didn't have DFH and it was the pop/rock kit loooool. Can't wait to get a better job so I can upgrade from wasting my money on food and cigarettes to wasting it on gear and programs I don't need so I can have a SLK cave. Finished my song on guitar, only have one part to really work on to get it the way I want it but I'm liking it so far. I just typed out a huge paragraph explaining it but I realized I should just release it and not spout shit out of my mouth.

drumcore 3 free is a good one as well, and as the title suggests, it's free. Sounds good for most things, though I don't particularly like it for blast beats. I used it on my recent doom album.

I don't think I'm going to get 3 songs in for this challenge, probably just have to stick with 2. Still pretty happy about that though.

Well, due to looking for a job and leaving home soon after, I'm not going to be able to complete this challenge. I'm a bit sad, honestly, I already came up with about two-thirds of a song.

Hey,
I might join. I have three questions:
1 - must each participant write a song about a random privately-disclosed lyrical theme?
2 - what's the prize for the future winner?
3 - shall the lyrics be exclusively written in English?

1- yes
2- there is no prize, there is no winner. It's for the pure enjoyment of doing a piece and sharing it with others and we all have a circle jerk review session of each other's songs.
3.- no, but it helps.

I have the house to myself this weekend, woooooo. So I'm going to try to finish up my second black metal song for the challenge. Definitely not going to get to 3 songs unless I end up just randomly writing something after drinking all this wine that's in front of me. Double woooooo.

Song nr. 3 for the Contest EP done in 4 hrs :) Need a bit help - someone can help me with samples from Japanese samurai movies, old ones. Need the speech of samurais or so? Anyone?

P.S Found what i needed so far :)

Part of the lyrics and short sample from what I've done today:

https://soundcloud.com/dominametalband/metallum-contest-iii-sample

Autumn wind of eve,
blow away the clouds that mass
over the moon's pure light
and the mists that cloud our mind,
do thou sweep away as well.
Now we disappear,
well, what must we think of it?
From the sky we came.
Now we may go back again.
That's at least one point of view.

By: Hōjō Ujimasa (北条 氏政?, 1538 – August 10, 1590) was the fourth head of the late Hōjō clan, and daimyo of Odawara.

Yeah I have quite a bit of work to do and I don't believe in sacrificing anything for the sake of a deadline.

But that's what deadlines are for. :)

I've been sidetracked for a week because I'm making a Doom level, but will focus everything on the black metal song in a couple days. Finally played drums yesterday along to the midi I made and it went better than expected, so the deadline won't be a problem. The thing I'm worried about is installing/using my new tascam and Reaper.

You should ideally write it for the deadline, but if you guys need an extension, then I'll be willing to provide.
Like I said, I'd rather you submitted something belatedly and actually submit something, than miss the deadline and submit nothing at all.

I've got mine mostly written. just need a closing riff and lyrics.
I usually write riffs first and then make a midi of it (with drums) and then practice it on drums/guitar for a few days until I'm mostly ready to record. do any of you guys write songs that way?

That's pretty much what I do: sit with my guitar at my computer and play riffs while tabbing/arranging in powertab. I don't add midi drums though, just metronome clicks. I usually have beats in mind for most parts, or I'll just let the midi play while improvising drums along to it to see what I like. Then practise drums and guitar along to the midi until ready to record.

I usually start recording ideas. I'm never tabbing or so - just recording all the stuff and after that simply picking the parts I most like. When my guitar lines are ready starting to work on the drums... usually at the end I'm recording the bass track and the keys (if there are any). Think it is one of the reasons that helps me sometimes to write songs that fast (usually song is pretty much ready in 4-6 hrs. from grabbing the guitar till the last result).

I'll just say I have a bad habit of only posting when I'm not sober. I should be able to finish everything granted it is the 10th and not the last day of October. I was programming drums right before my last post and I was just pissy because my song ended up being a bit longer than I intended and it could be done sooo much faster if I could just use real drums. The one thing I don't mind is the cymbal selection kicks mine in the ass. As far as writing goes I usually just play random things and try all different kinds of chords and eventually something comes of it. I've never bothered to make notations of anything unless I'm at work or somewhere and something pops into my head and I don't have access to a guitar. After I've jammed on everything for a bit and figure out how everything will be placed I program the drums, which I usually have vague ideas so it's not so hard coming up with things. Just click here click there nope that's wrong click here that's better. Record guitar tracks over that and then write and record bass, which I've come to love because I stopped thinking of it like a guitar. Vocals are last because I take even longer to write lyrics.

Well I ended up finishing 3 songs for this challenge, two songs with lyrics and one instrumental. It was a stretch writing about space and the cosmos and making it black metal-ly, but fortunately lovecraft gave me inspiration.

I finished recording one song called "Large Cigar" (in about 2 hours and half yesterday morning). I just have to mix it before I can submit it.

I don't know if I will have the time to record the second song I wrote on the same theme in 10 days. I might go on a vacation, so...

Submission is only allowed until 10th October at midnight?

Shit, I meant November too, haha!
But no, the same applies. If you can ideally get it submitted before the 10th, do; if it's not possible, I'll be willing to give an extension.
