Wow, you just found Loudness AND Witch Cross?!

I'm jealous... I WISH I could go back and discover those two for the first time all over again!

It's not sarcasm...Loudness are by far the most famous Japanese metal band. They were really well-known in Europe and the US in the 80s.

That's strange, I've heard of Sabbat, Abigail, and Sigh long before hearing of Loudness. Funny how things work out!

You're robbing yourself if you don't get ahold of Fit For Fight. It's nwobhm (from sweden) with the same production as Don't Break the Oath. That sort of thing is only supposed to exist in the restless dreams of metalheads.

Believe me, I love that record. I'll be ordering it as soon as I get the chance.

Ever listened to Deep Switch? They sound absolutely nothing alike but I happened to get into them both at the same time so now they're forever tied together in my brains.

A lot of people don't like Deep Switch, or think they're a silly near-parody. I'm not one of those people. I think Nine Inches of God is a perfect record. Beyond weird though, and not in a try-hard way. It came naturally to those boys, I can confirm via recent emails with Dr. Nice that he's still weird as a mother fucker.

Jamming Larmes de Heros by Sortilege right now. I'd probably be paying more attention if I could follow along with the lyrics but this album has grown on me tremendously from the first listens. I don't know how but I've got to get ahold of Metamorphose soon. I know I'm preaching to the choir for most of you but I'm still kind of surprised what a "sound" the french scene had. You can tell they really studied their Mercyful Fate, but they're too romantic to be that evil, so they made their own way...

Haven't heard them yet. That's some intriguing album art, to say the last; I'll give them a listen and post my thoughts here. It's cool that you have correspondence with one of the members! I always get a nerdy kick out of things like that :P

The guitarists dad painted that shit on like a days notice! Sorry if you hate it, no promises. I love that quirky weird shit. Time Machine took me the longest to come around on but now I think its a masterpiece. Sounds like Gabriel-era Genesis playing trad heavy metal.

I was super stoked on our correspondence at first and then it just got kind of weird. He sent me a whole concept album he wrote and recorded on his PC and I couldn't get beyond the horrible modern sound and didn't want to be honest with him about it.

Damn, that's pretty cool. I doubt I'll be disappointed; I'm very open minded when it comes to music. A band has to really fucking suck for me to not like it. Or, as you say about this album he has made, it has to have very sterile production :P

Oh hahah my fault I forgot they're danes! You know how it goes, you fuckers are completely interchangeable to us american pigdogs.

Inspired by the "mini-review" thread to give Protectors of the Lair another spin. This is the first time I've made it through the whole thing I think. It really is completely different than the debut, so much more off-the-hinges and wild sounding. I'm not sure why it didn't grab me initially, there's a lot of potential.

Speaking of Witch Cross; just 20 miles away at the same time, Proud released their only album. They never got the attention they deserve.

Damn, sick recommendations spewing out the asshole in this thread, I'll have to stick around indefinitely...

Appreciate it, brothers. I'll be back for more soon!

Queued up soon is Wolf from Sweden, a newer trad metal band. Thoughts?

By the way, I'm loving Deep Switch.

I'm really glad to hear that. Once you've spun it a few times if you want to drop some detailed thoughts I'd love to read 'em.

I'm very partial to the title track, The Poisoned Lake, and Spinning on the Wheel. The title track is so gleefully sinister and base, and those leads sound like the Rev was trying to be Shermann and Denner at the same time.

Oh and the "ballad" is a jaw-dropper for me. It sounds like this little floating island of complete, open sincerity in the midst of all these bizarro-world, Fate-meets-Rocky-Horror tunes.

Ha! To be honest, the only song on the record which gave me a really silly vibe was the opener. The rest of it was a solid slab of burning hot metal, and the lyrics were the only silly part. I'll re-visit it for sure.

Now I'm listening to Oz - Fire in the Brain featuring Quorthon's hand on the cover of the album. Up next is going to be either Proud or Heavy Load, haven't decided yet...

I'd like to buy an Omen album, wich one would you guys recommend? (I already have Battle Cry). From what I listened on youtube any album might do, except the last one which sounds terrible.

Warning of Danger and The Curse are both very solid albums, I prefer WoD but it's really a toss-up for the most part, except that WoD has Hell's Gates, which might possibly be Omen's best song.

Warning of Danger is almost as good as Battle Cry. So much fun...The Curse isn't as good, maybe a 4 star album instead of near perfect, but it still rocks out pretty well.

The Curse was actually my favourite for a while (Battle Cry's top today). But all three are essential with Warning of Danger being the most uneven.

Just found Witches Hammer thru the Canadian Speed Metal compilation released in '03. I've gotta say this is some of the best speed metal I've heard. Great raw production, killer riffs and ripping fast leads.

Hey guys, any of you familiar with a band called Tragedy Divine? They released an album called Visions of Power in 1996, and it's quite decent from what I heard. MA says that they play prog metal, but there's a bit more to them than just that. Beware the weirdo vocals though:

Love it thank you, weird vocals are always my favorites though. Sounds pretty progressive to me though obviously not only that, its great though. Opening riffs are almost a bit of death metal, get more traditional though. Not too many bands with heavy riffs like that with these vocals it really goes well together.

Reminds me of
this with way heavier riffs, but the vocals arent quite as good in Tragedy Divine IMO.

The vocalist on Tragedy Divine is fine he sounds a little like Kai Hansen, though the music in that song doesn't really grab me though.

Anyone here into Plasmatics?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BEkXGQeoQY

I just came across this song today while watching an old episode of Beavis and Butthead. Given their image I would have expected the to sound more hard/punk rock. But this is some really awesome raw heavy metal. Is this a good indicator of their typical sound or not?

I love the Plasmatics to death but that track is not really indicative of their sound. This comes from their last album which is much more hard rock/metal influenced than their earlier. Their early songs are more akin to a punk/metal mix. Either way - great band and worth checking out.

Battle Cry > The Curse > Warning of Danger

The Curse has several absolutely excellent songs, almost tempted to say it and BC are equal, but BC is just too classic. WoD has some great songs too but it's less consistent.

So the new Satan's Host is finally, FINALLY coming out. It's slated for November 14th, pre-orders are open, so it seems like after nearly 13 months of delays it's the real deal this time. Listening to the preview track...yeah, it's been worth the wait. A bit slow to get going, but MAN do some of those riffs fucking SMOKE. Conklin if anything sounds even better than before.
