It's a horrific form of music in my opinion, but I do like Dookie and Insomniac by Green Day.

I love pop punk. Some great bands being Rufio, Sum 41, Man Overboard. Though most people on this site would shun you for liking it :P

Can't stand pop/punk myself.

Old Offspring I used to love back in the day and Bad Religion I still consider good but when all that stuff like Blink 182 (only the drummer is good), Newfound Glory, Good Charlotte, Greenday (they really began to suck), Bowling For Soup, All American Rejects, Fallout Boy etc started to dominate the airwaves it really pissed me off and that is what I consider pop/punk to be. Just sounds like a bunch of immature kids jumping around on stage on energy drinks playing simple chords with weak unmemorable riffs.

This song isn't bad. It's just that the 90s pop punk bands (with the exception of those two Green Day albums and Bad Religion, I can't believe I forgot to mention them) are underwhelming and the 2000s groups like New Found Glory, MCR, Fall Out Boy flat out suck imo.

I shamelessly like Simple Plan. They (still) put on great shows and I am one of few people that enjoy their self-titled album from 2008 (the one that got the most flak from music critics and 'trve kvlt' fans that got mad for the band not sounding like their 1st album).

Seems like a lot of Punk Rock and Skate Punk bands get the "Pop Punk" label for no reason.

I like the album Dookie by Green Day, as well as some The Offspring and The Descendents (if those two are considered pop-punk). For me there's a really thin line between enjoyable pop-punk and crappy, jumpy and cheesy/annoying POP-punk.

I grew up listening quite a bit to Green Day (Dookie and Insomniac) and The Offspring (Smash and Americana). I can still appreciate it, especially Green Day. A year ago or so I rediscovered Insomniac and I really dig it. Can't say I have heard much from either band after that except for a few of the singles they released.

The hip thing when I was about 9 or 10 was Swedish melodic/poppy punk so I have that in my history as well. Usually the compilation records like "Definitivt 50 spänn" which featured all of the more popular bands at the time (Dia Psalma, Radioaktiva Räker,, Strebers, DLK, Räserbajs, Charta 77 etc). Some of the viking rock stuff as well with the infamous Ultima Thule and the relatively unknown band Hel (featuring female vocals).

What is the difference though between pop punk and skate punk? To my ears a lot of skate punk is very much poppy in nature. I can't put a finger on what it is that separates the two genres.

70s California pop punk was pretty awesome, mainly the Beach Blvd comp with The Simpletones and Rik L Rik, 80s hardcore punk band Flag of Democracy straddled a fine line between pop and punk playing some songs so fast they sounded brutal as hell with carelessly chugging guitars and drums on the verge of blastbeats but all the while doing that AHHHHHH OOOOOHHH sing a long stuff, see their album Shatter Your Day or 23 for an example of pop punk that is still punk.

There's good ways to do it, as far as Warped Tour mainstream pop punk, bleeeegh, my sister bought a lot of issues of Flipside in the 90s and man all that shit was gay as hell, generic nondescript bands of white guys in vans and baseball hats with album covers of red wagons with flames on the side, just fucking stupid bland ass bullshit, I am getting pissed thinking about all the dumbass fake punk my sister made me listen to

Nu-Metal is to Metal is what Pop-Punk is to Punk its the Getaway to find Faster heavier bands.

Warped Tour doesn't even have any type of Punk Rock anymore, this past Warped had a bunch scene bands. The Black Dahlia Murder, Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish were the only bands worth seeing on the show.

From what I can gather, skate punk is pretty interchangeable with melodic hardcore if you're a little flexible with the definitions, and they're both a lot faster and more aggressive than regular old pop punk. When I try to say I like skate punk and melodic hardcore, I usually just say "pop punk" so as to not confuse people unfamiliar with the genre, but it's kind of like saying you like "heavy metal" when really most trad metal bores you and you're only into Dragonforce style power metal.

Basically to me, pop punk:

Skate punk:

I have recently decided that San Diego's Fight Fair is the greatest pop punk band of the past 10 years. There are current bands like The Story so Far and The Wonder Years still putting out great stuff that might be better, but considering that Fight Fair is now defunct it's safe to now speak of their legacy. Just wait 5-10 years and everyone will be on the internet singing their praises, just how every old influential band eventually becomes revered after their time.

First, there is the "xFashionx" EP (lol). I actually just discovered it today, but it is pretty damn good for a first release. FF singer Alex Bigman is a big oldschool tr00 90s screamo bro (referred to as "skramz", I'm pretty sure he coined the term). He had a short lived skramz band called Seeing Means More in the early 2000s, and I was very surprised discovered to realize that Fight Fair's first EP is HALF POP PUNK, HALF SCREAMO. Wowza. Idk maybe this is actually a semi-normal combination, but I've never heard pop-skramz like this. But for a band's first release, the songs are all well composed and memorable, especially for existing in such a genre-blending gray area.

"My Worst Disease", a good representation of Fight Fair's original sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kktxwZzfIKI
Also, the original version of "San Diego"; the most pop punk song on this EP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf_9XR5R9rY

Next comes up the "Settle the Score" EP. This is classic, A-level, top-tier EASYCORE (i.e. half pop punk, half hardcore/metalcore). Thing of it as a Southern California take on classic A Day to Remember material. Catchy verses with great vocal memories that slide into huge, uplifting major key breakdowns. Very rarely do you find music that blends pop and heavy so well. What other music can you both dance AND mosh to??? Also this is where the lyrics start to get really good. That line in "Brain Freeze" that goes like "I know you're single because I saw it on your new feed" = so next level and very relatable in this fastpaced world that relies on social media. We've also got the re-recorded version of "San Diego" (better production brings out the heaviness) and a short, 30 second hardcore track "For the Win".

Title track "Settle the Score" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsTgQE46hDM
"Pop Rocks". DONT BOTHER WITH THE OTHER BOYS, I'M BETTER THAN THEM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9J4du5x0kI

Then, we have their one and only full length album, California Kicks. Here the band drops their previous heavy elements and adopt a surf rock sound. There are still breakdowns every once in a while, but they're not the focus of the song and don't really try to be particularly brutal. A lot of fans didn't like it because it's 50% an ironic joke, but this is definitely chock full of Fight Fair's best material. This album makes me wish that Beach Boys surfcore was a widespread thing because they do it very well. This album has their best lyrics, hands down. It ranges from tongue in cheek stuff about being a sweet, wholesome guy (a la Beach Boys) to partying with your bros on the beach, eating Del Taco and creeping on babes. The title track has this hilarious gang shout "JEROMES' DREAM/ORCHID TEN INCH SPLIT" (harkening back to the band's screamo past).

"California Kicks", one of the catchiest songs I know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlex4wzfQmw
"Diner Date" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFkZr4rhOPE
"California Girls" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnx7Er9QKoc
"I've Got a Secret" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_JbBYtE1hw

Their last release was the Broken EP. As expected, this is mostly a blend of their previous sounds: halfway between the easycore of Settle the Score and the surf rock of California Kicks. Not a whole lot to say at this point, the songs are still great and it really bummed me out they never put out another record after this. The last thing they released was a cover of Nirvana's "Tourettes" I believe.
"Broken" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F_VcOu8FH4
"How Do I" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sig4IGPWw-Q

Anyways, just wanted to drop some love for this great band. Seeing how most of you guys only know about old pop punk, it would help for you guys to brush up on current stuff you know? Mark my words: in 10 years Fight Fair will be the token obscure band for pop punk bands to list as an influence.

I'm not to into Pop Punk, not if they sound like Green Day or Blink 182, but some acts like The Descendents & The Vandals are o.k. to me. I also like some Ska Punk bands such as Less Than Jake & Chiking Victim too, now and then. I mention Ska Punk because the genre sounds very poppy to me. Goldfinger's "Superman" was the first song I heard.

Yep. I certainly did. That franchise is pretty much what made me like so many Rock, Punk, & Metal genres, as well as some varieties of Hiphop, funk, & Electronic, without being open minded.

Dillinger Four is my favorite punk band of all time. When they showed up on my radar around 97 they basically erased 99% of all pop punk from my mind forever. It saddens me that I haven't seen them mentioned here (although I'm fucking exhausted and admittedly not reading closely, so my apologies if I'm wrong). After about 20 years of being a fan of the genre they are about the only pop punk band I listen to, along with say, the Arrivals (yep, about as D4 related as it gets, haha) and Leatherface (who everyone should listen to or kill themselves).

Anyway the main reason I'm responding to this thread is that when I hear people describe bands like A Simple Plan as pop punk it gives me a fucking migraine. There is a laundry list of similar bands mentioned in this thread that do nothing but make me think of that nauseating time, right around when I graduated high school, when incredibly plastic sounding shit like this was all over MTV (and whoever reminded me of Blink 182 and American Pie - I simultaneously hate you and thank you, haha).

Pop punk for me has always meant bands like Descendents, Buzzcocks, Dicks, Dils, etc. Jumping into the 90s I liked a lot of bands on Dr. Strange Records, Lookout, a small amount of the less annoying bands on Fat Wreck, stuff like that. But at some point Green Day jumped ship into writing Seinfeld soundtracks and opened the gates for a shitload of bands to hit it big - most of these bands just sounded like the Backstreet Boys with guitars to me. Hey, I guess you could say any and all pop rock, including punk, shares some riffs and patterns or something but for me spirit in music is a real thing and these rotten 2000 era bands just had none of it.

But then again I'm not an elitist by any means, especially not when it comes to something like pop punk which is inherently an attempt to not take things all that seriously (with obvious exceptions like Propagandhi, but there you see how excessive seriousness can turn into self parody pretty quickly).

Maybe the reason the emergence of these MTV bands gave me such a fit of heartburn is that I got into punk with DC and Boston hardcore, Born Against, grind bands like Napalm Death, blah blah blah. I always envisioned bands like Blink 182 as bait for people who otherwise would have been listening to say, 3rd Eye Blind or something. Probably just rewinds my brain to 1999 when I was 18 and I still wanted to wage cultural war on high school football players. :-P

Well, Descendents are pretty much the pinnacle of pop punk and the Ramones rule so I'd say you're doing better than most of the folks expressing their love for Blink 182 etc. in here.

Also, fuck yes on Dillinger Four.

The farthest i've ventured into punk is G.G. Allin and Children of Technology.
