DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.clandestinemetalzine.cl

Image

By R

DEAD AWAKEN born from the ashes of ABYSSAL CHAOS in 2002, between that year and 2008 they released 5 self produced Demos, but certainly the most important feature of DEAD AWAKEN has been their lineup unstable, because since the early existence as a band they have suffered numerous lineup changes, even "Where Hopes turn..." was released by two members only, I am talknig about Jörgen Kristensen (V, G & B) & Mats Blyckert (D) both came from the Old school Death Metal bands ABHOTH & SUFFER.
The Polish DM (VADER, BEHEMOTH, HATE) and WAR are their main influences, but the thrashing Jörgen's riffs and the excellent Mats's performance give a touch of distiction and acoustic independence to the music of these DM zombies.
"Kingdom of Damnation", "Deutsches Afrika corpses", "State of Corrosion" y "Where hopes..." are tracks that will destroy your skull just like a Dum-Dum bullet.
An excellent debut of this new Swedish DM Panzer, an Album with a mature and solid sound proclaiming with violence War has begun... Lately Magnus Wall & Jonas Stålhammar (Both ex ABHOTH's members too) had joined to DEAD AWAKEN as Live members only.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://allabouttherock.co.uk

Image

By Dave O'Gorman

I first encountered Eternal Helcaraxe in the live environment and bought the EP that they had on sale on the night and have followed them ever since. Make no mistake, this is Irish Black Metal. One thing that I really like and have always liked about these guys is that you can hear the heritage bleed from the speakers and this is, I feel very deliberate but at the same time not al all forced.

With chants of “We stand united”, you get a very real sense of the subject matter. As you listen, you can see the music come to life in your mind’s eye. Eternal Helcaraxe are very proud of their heritage and are proud Irishmen as am I when I listen to them and they do this without any hint of a cliché.

Irish melodies are interwoven through a brutal black metal assault and it works perfectly. Nothing is overpowering, it is never all one thing and nothing of another. It is a perfectly balanced release.

The musicianship is outstanding with caustic vocals and occasionally some very convincing killer clean vocals. The band have nailed atmosphere and that is a very difficult thing to do naturally and organically.

This is a band perfectly in sync, releasing for me what is a perfect form of black metal driven by a proud sense of heritage, unforced and therefore convincing. I listen to this all of the time and every time the hair stands on the back of my neck.

This is essential black metal.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

Swedish initiates The Gardnerz took me quite by surprise, not due to their unusual moniker, but by their rather unique approach to the hybrid of doom and death metal which is a bit trickier to classify than the garden variety drudges who generally inhabit the genre. You can clearly hear the roots of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost or Officium Triste in this sound, but the stark melodic walls they superimpose seem more akin to fellow swedes like Memory Garden or Candlemass, if they implemented layers of growling and snarling more like a grind or death metal outfit. They are also fond of interjecting calm contrasts into a lot of their songs, with flows of thick bass and cleaner, slightly affected guitar tones.

It doesn't always work that well, but the overall aesthetic is one of a some bone carved galleon on a sea of crushing and tranquil emotions that seem to shift on a normalized basis. Prime examples include opener "The Art of Suffering", which transforms from an elfin eloquence to these massive dual melodies that twine beneath the guttural foreman; or "Flaw in the Axiom", which has these epic, gliding guitar lines but builds into complexity to create a more exotic, hammering rhythm after the bridge. They definitely experiment with the riffing, striating cuts like "Incident" or "Born to Consume" with these eerie, scale based departures that one might expect of a more technical death metal act, and most importantly, they understand that doom metal must not be slow, boring and wholly soul-leeching to successfully shower its emotional void upon the listener, even if a few too many of the tunes use comparable techniques and suffer from sameness.

This is far from funeral doom, mind you, but a dynamic formula which never underplays the significance of the guitar riff. The production is giant, boxy and bright, even when converting a few of their obscure influences into covers. Vulcano's "Bloody Vengeance" and Winter's "Servants of the Warsmen" are both tackled here, and they both do a loyal and chunky service to the originals, even if some of the somber mood of the latter is lost with the brighter production. At any rate, I didn't love all the material on the album, and the vocals, while abrasive, are your pretty standard variety growls like a harsher Nick Holmes (his death voice), but the Swedes are onto something here. If they can extract some of their mightier melodic conjurations into some better grooves, and perhaps clean up some of the transitions between loud and soft, then they could easily lurch alongside their countrymen Isole as modern death/doom titans.

Rating: 7/10

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by A Different Shade of Black Metal Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Diabolical are a band from Sweden that has been interviewed by this zine before and plays a musical style that mixes melodic black metal with technical death metal and this is a review of their 2011 album "Ars Vitae" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are mostly technical slow to midpaced playing with some fast parts but that much in the way of blast beats, while the synths are very dark sounding and dont over dominate the music, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they sound very powerful.

Rhythm guitars are mostly slow to midpaced to fast technical death metal riffs that are also influenced by melodic black metal and thrash, while the lead guitars are very technical and melodic metal guitar solos.

Vocals are mostly deep death metal growls that have somewhat of a black metal edge to them in the high pitched screams, hile the lyrics cover death and the apocalypse with an occult edge, as for the production it sounds very heavy and professional with some songs being recorded live.

In my opinion this is another great album from Diabolical and if you where a fan of their previous releases, you will not be dissapointed. RECEMMONDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sightless" "Sicidal Glory" "Guidence Of Sin" and "The Dreaming Dead". RECEMMONDED BUY.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by Aristocrazia Webzine

Image

By Mourning

In the minds of every metalhead Norway nineties certainly is not remembered for the death metal, but the Scandinavian territory gave no gems of little value, impossible to forget people like and Molested Cadaver for example, sheltered there were also the Fester, training ever too much lauded but that his honest work the place and how.
During restoration of the Old school label reissued many offer the chance to come into contact with tiny disks, considered this "Winter Of Sin", the first album of the combo of Askim.
The dimension of sound is almost a "crossover" weird for the period, the base is a death metal canon but turns into doom territory, his voice grating stretching almost Blackish and melodies that cross the tracks thanks to a solo often "pulitina "anticipate or are coincident with the intentions of many of their colleagues who will move the shot and founded what would later be recognized as the Norwegian black metal circle, keep in mind that the disk in question is originally dated 1992, one of the fundamental years for that movement.
The influences of giants such as Celtic Frost / Hellhammer are evident in the sound so much that at times the approach is reminiscent of Darkthrone and Samael agl'albori career and although they can not boast pieces "masterpiece", "Winter Of Sin" is made insert into stereo with pleasure, is a performance that reminds us of what was genuine and honest way of asking the extreme, devoid of artifice and disgustingly plastic products (yes, it is a remastered version but not a plastic-remastered).
A taste for the tunes you live in tracks like "The Ancient Gods Wore Black" and "Victory!" both supported by a more than worthy of air quality that increases its value, the tracklist changes marked increase in intensity on the final scoring shots tighter in "Liberation" and "The Commitments That Shattered" and taking advantage of primordial and groove " As The Sword Clinch The Air "and" A Dogfight Leaves A Trace. "
Probably many do not change your life what these songs come, but contextualised in the period in which they were written and passion ooze, the undersigned finds himself catapulted into a time when the speech is the word death metal was coming around the hives people were coming and alienated as a bearer of incurable disease (a heartfelt thanks to all the fucking bigots), too small to buy discs in bulk, but not to keep your ears open listening to the advice of the largest (ninety years are not throw as many say, stop when maliconia me away).
As memories of the disc in the first version, the production was already oriented in keeping the good in low light and this press has kept this aspect (the original bassist of training, Jørgen Skjolden, unfortunately died in 2000), point to be reckoned with in As the depth given to the pieces played in their favor.
To sum ??up, as none of them is a sublime work by Fester "Winter Of Sin" is still a platter for an avid follower of the world that death is most welcome, though many of the rest of training youngsters who say they play old school inspired by these outputs so-called "minor" to understand what was the dedication to style and probably the metal shelves and lists the various mailorder would not say empty but maybe halved by too many obscenities that boast of that mark .
Step back in time to refresh your memory in some cases it does not hurt.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Giménez

There are always new formations which, although not really contribute something original to the scene, deserve to be heard with attention, since they do not have a high degree of innovation does not mean that quality has not. And that is precisely the case of THE GARDNERZ, a little Swedish, but with some components of Chile and Uruguay, who now draw their debut work, "The System of Nature". A difficult title to define its slow Death Metal means it can be easily seen Funeral Doom.
The sound that reigns throughout this compact is fragile and powerful, brutal and beautiful but with a notable tunes, mostly provided by the guitars that can sometimes recall the work of Schuldiner in DEATH (just listen, for example, cutting open the round, "The Artof Suffering") but, yes, with a much slower pace. The deep grunts of vocalist Niklas Ankarbranth fits perfectly with the dark sound of the combo and at the same time, in contrast to these weak (in sentiment, not quality) melodies that take the lead in the more atmospheric. Other songs like "Lady in the Grave" is pure Death Metal slow and rough and black with a touch metalhead, the truth is that their sound is always a walk in extreme genres, taking the best of each to, following thereby create the very sound of GARDNERZ. That said, the music, although not really original, is very varied, which always adds points to the disc, unfortunately, the voices could also have been more mixed, although its work adapting to what the music calls at all times is more than acceptable. On the other hand, production is a few moments ago that the compact does not sound like you really should, especially in the instrumental passages peculiar curious that includes the band in almost every one of its courts
On other tracks we find more progressive touches that could perfectly remember the best time ATHEIST (relatively speaking, of course).
THE GARDNERZ have interesting ideas (a mixture of styles that we've heard before but it is still welcome) who play through good compositions but, unfortunately, fail a little in the production and vocals that can ultimately lead to monotonous , the truth is that with a little more work the end result could have been really enjoyable. However, and despite being a record that still leaves plenty of room for progress, it is a very interesting debut work and anticipates a great future ahead.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://brutalism.com

Image

By Robert Cardenas

Battling out of Stockholm Sweden Septekh emerges. Consisting of 4 members this band has much to offer. Their 1st demo in 2009 followed by an EP titled “Not Quite What I had In Mind”, another E.P titled “The Seth Avalanche” in 2012 and finally “Apollonian Eyes” in 2013. This band has much to offer.

Apollonian Eyes: The title track Apollonian Eyes is pretty straightforward, Thrashy and attacking full force. This song takes you though a roller coast of riffs and kicks ass. Bun it to the Ground (2nd track) is heavy as fuck and sure this song kicks ass live. Very heavy and solos are totally ripping. Curing The Gods kind of reminds me of God Dethronthed for some reason, which I think is a good thing, right? Lots of killer riffs with great screams and growls from beyond the graves! The last track Vlad Tepes one of those fist pounding songs with that Guitar riffs of thrash. I’m also getting the Destroyer 666 feel in some of the parts which again (my own opionin is killer). This E.P is 4 songs and runs at 16 Minutes.

My Concussion: This release has great production and it seems that these guys know exactly what they want to do music wise. Excellent musicianship. Great work and I think this band’s next release should be very interesting and I’m sure it’s gonna be something to look forward to in the future.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Dennis van Dommelen

We are talking early nineties. Death Metal was at its absolute peak but the Black metal scene in Scandinavia was already developing. Just a few bands from Norway: Darkthrone, Cadaver and the mighty Fester all released material that was more death metal related. We all know the story of the first Darkthrone album 'Soulside Journey' and how they quickly turned into a black metal band afterwards… Fester from Askim released their debut album “Winter of Sin” in 1992 after the demo tapes “The Introduction” and “Winter of Sin” which sold fast. I can remember seeing the adds of the album in some underground magazines from that time. In 2005 I finally bought the album on a public sale site. “Winter of Sin” became somewhat of a mystique release therefore. So when I finally listened to it for the first time 6 years ago it immediately grab me and never let me go. The guitar work on “Winter of Sin” is nicely done, it mixes a variety of tempos with strange melodies. On the subject of melodies, Fester creates some pretty strange ones, and I can't give a clear example of another band that does that. That also counts for the guitar solo's which appear at the rarest moments but are well thought and always going somewhere. Bjorn's vocals are harsh and more in the direction of black- than death metal. The album carries a dark and mysterious atmosphere of melancholy and despair, yet also nocturnal beauty. The songs possess and epic feel, maintaining a certain amount of gloom, despite a few upbeat riffs. It is difficult to choose the best songs as they are filled with so many different riffs and tempos. But over the years “Liberation” -with its majestic dreamy outtake- became somewhat of a favourite. For the majority of the album, the songs are slower or mid-paced though it does vary. To say that Fester has their own sound is an understatement so is to say that this is an absolute underground release that is not everybody's cup of tea. If you're into early nineties black/ death metal please give this a try. Abyss records does a great job here re-releasing this classic album in digi pack format with re-mastered sound at Bonemachine studio and including a live '91 track. The album “Silence” that came after this one shall also be re-released by Abyss records soon. Make sure to get that one too! Fester recently got together and the majority of songs for a new album is already done and to be released later this year. Can't wait for that one! For now: “Feel the cold waves of winter, not only in winter but the whole year…”

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by Chaos Vault

Image

By Oracle

Already I begin to honestly wonder if I am a jebniety. Different labels podsylaja various publishing houses, advertising them as revelations of the decade. And I did. And here comes this little shallow, an unknown band, and I'm like odsluchujac podjarany boar.
And that was even then. A thousand times the man had heard these things. Simple as construction cepa, oklepne back as a farmhand. For this name taken from a kiosk cheap deodorant Movement. Maax . For this first issue of this epce is entitled "Die By The Ax '" and that's at all beats me surreptitious. Especially the guys with Maax not look at these men ucacanych fragrant metals, contemplate what it sounds bride in his arms. Unless the chosen one is entered in the proof of Jack Daniels. At least so I conclude with "Six Pack Witchcraft", because my ear doslyszalo bands influences here, which is not going to dislike. The Crown - in the title track, for example, very audible. Nocturnal Breed - in the rest. Just as classic as Motörhead and Venom. All suffused with black metal sauce slightly. Motility riffs, simple songs, rude and crude play ... Hell Yeah! Maybe I'm very picky, do not appreciate art, but this Maax is a metal whore of flesh and blood! And many will listen to him and say "what it sees dong this?". I wonder too. But enough that fires the EP was, and gets a sudden attack of ADHD. Me that's enough. For the guys look like dads Hellstorma. Well I tell you, as a metal mug shot!
Okay, I will not persuade you to seek the board, because it seems to dog the doghouse. Who knows what it was, probably looking for this album since April, when it was released "Six Pack Witchcraft."

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.heavyhardes.de

Image

By Lord Obirah

The founding year of the Horde dated to 1989. Long, long time ago so that the boys vanished from the rehearsal room and the first signs of life in the form of demos The Introduction (1991) and Winter of Sin (1992) among the people brought. No Fashion Records ultimately was responsible for the release of the debut Winter Of Sin, which is these days about Abyss Records back into favor.
The underground status never was able to grow out. Perhaps it is due to the complex orientation of the material. Maybe it's the mid-tempo in its music, which are quite rare really fast, no, on the contrary tend to tighten the hand brake as they pass gas. Perhaps it is due to the gloomy and melancholic nature of the music, not really outstanding in the class or the playful honky sound. No matter what it is, for me, Winter Of Sin a great album, just because it beats not only stubbornly forward, because the band uses unusual songwriting and because of the underground sound gives it a flair that many bands aspire to no avail.
Enriched, this new edition also features a live track called "When Darkness Confirms (Live '91)", which displays about nine minutes, depending on where the live-resistant hammer. The noble digipack does the rest to this album not only put to Underground Black metal fans to the heart.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.metal-observer.com

Image

By James

DEAD AWAKEN. What does that mean? I must be missing something, as that looks like an adjective-verb combination that doesn’t make sense. Unless that Death Metal Random Name Generator is playing up…
Anyway, this band is made up of just two members, Jörgen Kristensen and Mats Blückert. The former appears to handle vocals, guitars and bass, so is clearly a talented musician (although they use a session bass player for live shows – so he clearly isn’t superhuman!) They have been in a number of Death Metal bands previously, namely ABYSSAL CHAOS, ABHOTH and SUFFER, none of whom I’ve heard, so this is my first exposure to their output.
There are a lot of new Death Metal bands around at the moment and many of them seem to be playing old school Death Metal. These guys are no exception. I’m transported back to the early 90s again, this time to the sounds employed by bands like BAPHOMET, SINISTER and IMMOLATION. Do you have those albums? Classics like BAPHOMET’s "The Dead Shall Inherit" and SINISTER’s "Diabolical Summoning"? If so, you don’t need this (in my opinion). The band replicates the sound of these influences really well, but the songs don’t get close to the brilliance of those Death Metal pioneers.
Of the influences listed, this reminds me most of the first two SINISTER albums. Lots of speed, very guttural (and effective) growling, heavy guitars, fast drumming, etc. Most of the songs follow this style, but aren’t memorable. There’s nothing that makes them stand out above what has become a sizeable crowd of quality Death Metal bands.
The standout track for me is "Deutsches Afrika Corpse," which has starts well, getting the head nodding with a catchy tune that again reminds very much of vintage SINISTER, even down to bass breaks. There’s a nice riff that appears at various points throughout the song and could have come straight from IMMOLATION’s "Dawn Of Possession." It’s a good song, but it does feel like there is something missing. That might be down to the lack of a guitar solo, or it might just be that the song needs something else to lift it beyond ‘good’.
There aren’t many solos on the album; there’s one in the middle of "Rocket Symphony," which is okay, and a short one at the end of "Mudhell," but it’s a bit messy, frenetic and doesn’t fit in too well with the rest of the song. Maybe this is something the band could improve for future albums – more solos and better ones at that. "Mudhell" also has an almost military-sounding section in the middle of the song, which although adding interest and variation, ultimately doesn’t lead anywhere.
The chorus of "Venom of the Population" reminds me of "Satan Spawn, the Caco-Daemon" by DEICIDE, yet another 90s Death Metal reference in their sound.
This is Death Metal played very well and I sense that these guys love the genre. I just get the feeling, as I’ve touched on a few times in this review, that there’s something missing. There’s plenty of potential here and if the band can add some more ideas and catchy, memorable songs they can be a Death Metal force to be reckoned with.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by Global Metal Apocalypse

Image

By RHYS STEVENSON

Looking rather dapper in their photo is one thing but the music by Septekh is beyond dapper, in fact it is mind-blowing, more so than trying to work out what style they are playing to a precise pigeonhole answer. 'The Seth Avalanche' is the Swede's second EP and was released last year, now what you can expect is a rather interesting approach and take on to the whole Death / Thrash algorithm, in fact this music will give you enough firepower to spit at anyone who messes your life, perhaps that could be the meaning behind 'The Seth Avalanche', but the music itself delivers crushing Death Metal vocals with the dripping of free-gliding riffs and child-friendly drumming, yeah right! This music is not meant for the emo's, so be warned. This music is meant for proper metal fans, that is all.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Giménez

But fortunately, Abyss Records will remove dust and pull out the trunk of memories its second "Winter of Sin", a compact, although it is now considered a rarity, it is a true gem that should have been recognition.

The truth is that, despite being able to get in the sack Feste Death Metal, played a mixture of styles that went from the Heavy Death Doom and even, also taking atmospheric parts. A round dark and heavy, but above all brilliant. Where the heaviness and melody merge in an amazing way, in addition to a production so clear how this genre could be in early / mid 90's in a group so underground.
All mixing elements and detail results in a homogeneous sound really compact, thick, strong and uniform.

The guitar riffs are unique at all times (just as there are not too memorable solos), along with some great harmonies and tremolo. The truth is that the six strings are one of the elements to stand out in this work by his outsized personality, plus the contrast between two ways of using the guitar gives a final result much more original. Perhaps it is something essential in creating the character of this plastic. In fact, mastery of all instruments that make up the combo is amazing, since execution touches perfection at all times.
The voice is another plus in this "Winter of Sin", as it is not what one would expect in a work of this genre, as it is quite sharp and at times shouted, more typical of a Black band.

In this reissue by Abyss Records found, as a bonus track, a live version of 91 of his song "When Darkness Confirms" (belonging to their second demo). This court seems to have been recorded in a studio but the quality of a demo, does not lose its essence and its quality standard and, moreover, I dare say that the voice sounds much better here because it provides more strength and a sense terrifying to the song.

Just a gem, unfortunately and unfairly, forgotten and almost unknown, but near-perfect riff first to last (and pun intended).

Rating: 9.5/10

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis

Instantly this one caught me by the throat and a with a swift crack across my skull it was apparent that nothing else sounds entirely like Diabolical and they embody that title to the fullest extent possible. Part technical death metal, skilled and unique, unpredictable, and yet so smooth and perfectly executed like a surgical incision, this band brings fury and unrelenting chaos back to the melodic and often abused technical/prog element in death/black metal. The symphonic elements only amplify the certain grim and suspenseful atmospheres in each track, sort of like the intro to a great horror film with images of mutilation and abominations being exacted as the story unfolds. There’s also a slight post-industrial feel in some of the effects that give some of the tracks a masochistic and mildewed grey cement dungeon, regardless of what the hell this band does on here, it creates a massive collision of brutality and skill that rivals many and proves that not all things melodic/symphonic/cinematic are wasteland of sorrow and pity, this is an asshole ripper!!!!!! Think technical on the level of mid to late era Death (Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverence, Individual Thought Patterns), some Amorphis, and you’ll get the idea of where the skill and brutality fuse perfectly

Opening up with the eerie neo classical horror film intro of “Ortus”, you instantly know you’re treading in dangerous crimson saturated waters lit with the bright yellow and orange flames that scour the Earth as the war rages on through “Sightless 6”. The intricate arpeggios and melodic lines beneath the fury and pestilence of this track lead you further into some violent apocalyptic scenario full of blood and metal clashing.

“InFuitable Fatum” starts in from some hollow distance, somehow reverberating through a haze of death from the silence and sudden vanishing left by the ending of the previous track “Sightless 6”. Slowly the single solo guitar becomes clearer and nearer like a stalking threat about to become materialized and your skin tingles as the suspense builds through desolate melodic bits and more elements add as you get closer to the climax which explodes upon you with full force and makes your heart skip a beat or two.

Now we come to the all powerful “Eye” with lyrics about the “…crack of a whip beats you into submission…” , “…I see through all your lies…” , “…surrender to emptiness…” just makes my decision on this one easier as a masterpiece of its own creating and highly recommended to everyone who wants something genuine, melodic, aggressive and brutal, seething with hate, but with clean production and graceful deliverance as opposed to raw and bare. This motherfucker is one of those tracks that actually leaves you hanging because nothing else in your mind will compare to the rush you’ve experienced through this 6 minutes of misanthropy and overthrowing submission and ignorance.

“Guidance of Sin” takes a raw and occultic, yet violent black metal sound in vocal style and keeping with the symphonic and technical this track completely restores your faith in the lack of faith in humanity and could possibly even cause injuries to those around you as it inspires you to thrash about and take revenge.

All in all, if you’re going to be a true individualist, this will be a great anthem to further ignite your rebellious nature. Question everything and accept nothing as pure truth, even though hopefully I’ll be convincing enough to get you to consider this release, plus it will obliviate you both physically and mentally!!!!!

BANE (Serbia) Interview by http://www.clandestinemetalzine.cl

Image

By Roberto de Santiago

Young band from the Balkan (Serbia) with a half-decade of existence. During this time they have released a Demo (2007), an EP "Misanthropia" (2010), a couple of splits & "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" (Debut Album). The past November 7th, 2012 was released "The Acausal Fire" their sophomore LP under Abyss Records, without a doubt one of the best Melodic BM albums of the past year. The following interview was conducted the past year. Currently Branislav Panic (BANE ´s alma matter) is relocated in Montréal, Québec where he reformed the band in 2013 with new members; Eddy Levitsky (HOLLOW, KARKAOS) on bass & Backing vocals, Gabriel Choinière-Fortin (Drums) & Max Allard (Guitars & Backing Vocals) from the BM band FROSTBITE.

C: BANE was formed in 2006 but the band had a hiatus from 2007 to 2009 right? - What were the main causes of your recess of 2 years?

Branislav: Correct. The main problem was that back then I had no option for any kind of line-up...the recording purpose of the first demo was in order to find some people, but back then my old Death Metal band Disdained was growing until it disbanded in early 2010, and then my my main focus finally went back to BANE.

C: You are the only former member of BANE currently right? - Why did you have so many problems to find a suitable line-up so far? - What is the statue of Nokkturno in the band?

Branislav: Yes. The constant problems with the line-up are mainly because people usually do not know what to expect when they enter the band. In order to play, you have to be 666% devoted to the band, and have to take everything very seriously - from rehearsals, live concerts, etc... And the majority of the previous band members simply could not put themselves into the position of being a loyal band member. The current line-up is definitely the best & most stable one until date, with Nokkturno as a keyboard (session) player.

C: Your second album "The Acausal Fire" was released just some days ago...Right? Could you tell to ours readers some details about the production of it? I mean Studio, producer, etc.... How time did you spent for the recording?

Branislav: We spent a total of 10 days recording the album if I remember correctly. The recording engineer & producer was Honza "Butcher" Kapak (AVENGER), and the sound was crafted at his own Hellsound Studio, located in Czech Republic.

C: Why did you decide to include a DISSECTION´s cover (´´Night´s Blood´´?)

Branislav: Because for me personally, that is probably if not the best Black/Death Metal composition ever written. I`ve always wanted to make record cover of that song, and this was the right time to do it. We still play that song very often on our live shows, in the honor and rememberance to Jon Nodtveidt & Dissection.

C: ´´Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness (2010) your first album was released under Grom Records. - Why did you decide to change of Record Company? I mean from Grom records to Abyss records? Are you satified with the work of Abyss Records so far?

Branislav: I`ve been in touch with Dan ever since we released our first EP called "Misanthropia". At first he re-released our debut album on Digi-CD with bonus track with whom I was very satisfied with all the promo work he had done for the band, so it was just a logic step to continue our cooperation. There is no bad blood between us and Grom Records, we just seperated ways on a professional level, while remained in very good friendship relation.

C: I can see Misanthropy is the base in your Lyrical concept. What are the causes of your hate against mankind?

Branislav: The human race itself, and it`s infernal stupidity you can see in everyday life.

C: In March 2011 the band released a split with NEFTAKARA (Malaysia) called “Necrodeath Ritual” and then one year later another a split was released, but this time with LYCANTHROPY (Russia) called “Dissolve and Coagulate”. How was born the idea for these split?

Branislav: I am a fan of all those bands, specially NEFFTARAKA and LyYCANTHROPY. We`ve been in touch for a while, much before we started thinking about releasing something together. I am very glad we did, because those Split releases represent true support between underground Black Metal bands from all over the globe.

C: Now please tell us about your experience touring for Europe. You have played with a lot of European underground bands like: ROOT, AVENGER, INFEST, ENTHRALLEMENT, etc.... Did you share stage with´´bigger´´ bands?

Branislav: Yeah, we shared stages with many bands, but some more "worth mentioning" would probably be SODOM (Ger), MALEVOLENT CREATION (USA), DECAPITATED (Pol), INQUISITION (Col), and so on...concerning Tours - it`s always great to be on the road, meet great people, see other countries, watch great local Extreme Metal bands, etc... Sometimes it can be really hard looking from the financial aspect, also lack of sleep is frequent, etc...but it`s all worth it.

C: Do you think BANE is ready to play in big festivals such as: Partysan, W.O.A, With full Force, Summer breeze, Neurotic Deathfest etc...?

Branislav: Well, technically at this time I can say that we could find find ourselves on those stages and sound decent, but that`s not gonna happen anyway, so...we are a Underground Black/Death Metal band from Serbia, so none of those Festivals really care about bringing us there to play. Besides, I don`t even like to perform on big stages - the atmosphere is usually much better in smaller venues, were the bands really connect with the people inside.

C: Could you tell us something about Serbia? Do you have idea about the beginning of ´´metal´´ in your country? And how this style came to be and what were the pionners bands fron Serbia?

Branislav: I`d spit on my country, how bad it is in every single way, which is the reason why I am now living in Montreal, Québec.

C: And about your city Novi Sad,.. What can you tell us? Do you have a good underground scene in your city? What are the main local bands from Novi Sad?

Branislav: No. We have no Metal shops, no concert venues to play Extreme Metal. You get the point. About the local bands...none worth mentioning really, none take this seriously enough. On the other hand I am the first to understand the difficulties they face, but still...show no mercy.

C: How did influence the political and military conflicts to the metal bands of your country? Can you explain to us how the war to affected negatively to the Serbian metalheads?

Branislav: Don't mean to be rude or anything, but won't answer this question the way you expect me to, sorry. The thing is, what's done is done. You (not you, I mean in general) can't be talking about the past your whole life and do nothing to make things better. I understand it can be hard, but man...you get to live life only once, so better make the best out of what you have, and work on things you want to have.

C: Can you tell us something about your projects or bands in paralel? I mean GOAT EATER (Grindcore) & SENIUM (Death/Doom). Also you have a new project with Nokkturno right? Called KEYCHAIN what can you tell us about this band?

Branislav: Senium is now history; we announced that the band is splitting up justa few days ago, so that is done. GOAT EATER recorded new material, and I am guessing it will be released sometime in 2013, but nothing confirmed. KEYCHAIN, however is in serious works. Yes, it contains Nokkturno and Lukas of BANE as well, so it's a similar story with what happened to Death Metal bands OPPRESSOR and BROKEN HOPE - members formed Alt Rock/Metal SOiL, just like we formed KEYCHAIN, which is more or less in the same genre. We released our first single about a month ago, and just finished the pre-production of our first full-length album. Now things are a bit slow & complicated since I moved to Montreal, but the recording will take place sometime soon, and the new stuff should be released sometime in 2013. After that we have some plans, but unfortunately nothing I can share with you & the readers at this time, for the simple reasons that there is nothing confirmed until date. However, I encourage people to come check us out & follow us for news & updates concerning that band: http://www.facebook.com/keychainofficial

C: Please tell us a little story about Zlabog Promotions & Zlabog Home Studio... Did you have work with a lot of bands, Right? Can you to name a few ones?

Branislav: Zlabog Promotions is a booking agency which I runned with my long-time friend Nikola. He is currently the only one organizing concerts on Serbian soil, up next being KATATONIA next Spring, amongst other shows. Apart from that we organized many bands, so I will only name a few which I can think of right now: DECAPITATED (Pol), WARBRINGER (USA), CORPUS CHRISTI (Por), etc... About Zlabog Home Studio - this is actually my personal project, which was initially made for my projects only. However after a bit the interest got up to some bands, and so far I produced recordngs for Keychain and Goat Eater as far as my bands go, but did some recording/mixing/mastering for other bands such as Ungoliath (Germany), Paimonia, Ancient Sorrow, etc...

C: What are the main reasons BANE will not to play live presentations during 2013?

Branislav: As mentioned earlier - I changed continents, and now live in Montreal, Québec. It will take time before/if I ever find a new line-up, but I also want to concentrate on the writing of BANE's 3rd full-length album, which will be pretty complex looking at the demo recordings done so far.

C: What are your next plans for the rest of this year?

Branislav: We toured as much as we could, so now the only thing left to do is to promote the new album as much as possible by getting reviews, interviews, etc...

C: Thanks a lot for this interview; Do you want to say something to ours readers in Clandestine at the end of the interview?

Branislav: Thank you brother for this interview & support, it means a lot. Follow BANE via our official site (baneband.com) or via Facebook if you prefer (facebook.com/baneband). If you have any questions address them to the band directly: [email protected], until then check out our brand new album "The Acausal Fire", just released via Abyss Records (USA)! HAIL CHAOS! -Branislav / BANE

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.metallized.it

Image

By Enrico Latino "tino84"

There are only four tracks for judging the work done by the Swedes Septekh.Four tracks that already but they say a lot about the type of music that drives our songwriting and notes and there is no doubt that it is the usual dirty, powerful and wonderful death metal. strong of an area that has produced bands like Grave , Entombed and At The Gates , our easily chew the Swedish sound, moving in a natural way and pull parts from aggressive to melodic parts that put the guitar in the foreground. Yet another EP of the band begins immediately fast and powerful with the title track, a bundle of energy and malice, mixed with a good dose of technique. It is a good choice to put the ladder at the beginning of a track so vital, deep voice that stands out the sufferer Meseke , the riffing explosive Wikström and the even more explosive coupled bass / drums duo Ström / Persson , united and cohesive well in causing maximum possible level of magnitude. represents a shift to more and more earth-shaking Burning To The Ground , slightly more canonical dell'opener, but damn effective. The band pressed on the accelerator without any problems and we find ourselves inundated by wickedness of Cursing The Skies , where the blast beats are wasted and the adrenaline soars up to the sudden conclusion. But it is with Vlad Tepes who reached the height of the disk, where it is mixed wonderfully ferocity and melody, with theorbo in full dusting and well inspired, alternating with restarts catchy and dynamic, on which you print the deep voice that convincingly well supports the whole. The dramatic final crescendo is creepy and closes as best you could short out this new combo of Swedish. macroscopic The only real flaw of Apollonian Eyes lies in its being very clear debtor of the sound track from the works of the famous bands of the past, albeit this does not prevent him very well be effective. Ultimately, passion, craft and good skills are the credentials with which the Septekh try to look out in the music industry, then the premise is promising. Okay, it will not be something innovative or fundamental to the history of music, but the chances to pull out quality albums are there. Meanwhile, fifteen minutes of fame and of plays, coincidentally the duration of this EP, do not refuse anyone, much less to bold Septekh.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by Absolute Hell

Image

By KaosChrist

Dead Awaken is a Swedish Death Metal band formed in 2002. They have had quite a string of releases thus far, but today we are taking a look at Where Hope Turns Bloods Red, released in 2013. As one would expect from their cover art, their lyrical themes are about war, quite fitting for a Death Metal band if you ask me. War is a brutal thing and so is Dead Awaken, a fitting combo.

Starting off I really liked the first track, the rest to follow were equally well done. The guitars are heavy and bombastic, as to be expected of the genre. They are well done and nice to listen to. As is typical of extreme metal the bass isn’t very loud, but there are times when you can hear it. They drums are fast and on time. They are very aggressive and hard hitting. They do not have any real flaws from what I can tell, everything sounds as it should. There as a lot of blasts used, but I was never annoyed by them. They are fitting. The vocals are typical Death fair, but are preformed competently. The music is quite fast paced, yet they know when to slow it down, which adds a lot and gives it a feel of dread. The mixing is well done. All in all, it is quite solid.

It is fitting in the times we live in to have a band that speaks about war and its brutalities. Here is a lyrical sample, taken from the track Mudhell. “Scar tissue graces Earth. Every trench is a wound. The war is bleeding our world. Into a cenotaph of souls. Eating its way through sanity. Our sentence carved in stone. Sorrow lingers in the fog. While lead greets flesh and bones.” Pretty powerful stuff, but it is 100% true. Humanity has always been a messed up race and war is one of our greatest crimes, it is nice to see and band covering the topic. Aside from their lyrical content, the music is good. There are no major flaws and I quite enjoyed the album. If you are a fan of Death Metal, you should check this out. Dead Awaken is a solid band with a great message. Notable tracks are Carnivore and Venom of the Population.

FESTER (Norway) "Silence" DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Dennis van Dommelen

First of all I am not worthy to review an album which I consider the biggest cult release of all time! No, I am not kidding, boys and girls. For me this is somewhat of the holy grail in extreme metal. A few months ago Fester's debut album “Winter of Sin” was re-released and got its deserved review at MMM (see Archive CD/DVD Reviews). Now it is time for the re-release of Fester's second album “Silence” First it's important to tell something about the time this album was recorded. When the band was recording in Vienna Powerstation in Austria -once again using Raymond Cesar Pellicer as a supervisor- in August 1993, Euronymous got killed. The media hype was enormous and also reaching Fester. At that time it wasn't even clear who murdered the guitarist of Mayhem. The band got several phone calls from different 'zines that wanted an interview. Fester only did one. Which once again showed the guys from Askim went their own way and did the things they believed were good.
The band then already signed a contract for 5! albums with Lethal records since No Fashion records (who released “Winter of Sin”) went bankrupt. Not knowing that “Silence” would be their one and only album for the Austrian label before a long hibernation. The album was meant to be called “Silent is the Raven” the artwork, a painting with a raven sitting on a branche in an old tree with a pole struck to its beard was already done but never used for this release (the vinyl release from Abyss records of this album has somewhat of the original idea in it). Instead Lethal ended up by just calling the album “Silence” while using a different cover art.
Now over to the music, the most important thing. On “Silence” you can hear that Fester has become a more mature band but without losing their touch with the underground and most important: their originality. Still here are the strong riffs the absolutely beautiful solo's which give the songs really surplus value. Different from “Winter of Sin” are the vocals. Rolf Tommy had decided that he didn't want to scream on the record. After several meetings the band came up with an interesting idea. Since the album was called “Silence” the band decided to do the vocals as whispering instead. Ralf and Tiger split the songs in two. So some of the songs have whispering vocals while others have the wellknown screams. I know no other band that has ever done this, only Belial on some parts on their “Wisdom of Darkness” EP. I think it gives great contribution to the dark, calm and gloomy music which has reached its full potential here on “Silence” Because that is what “Silence” is gloom and doom cast in beautiful songs. Give this album a chance, I promise, you won't be disapointed.
Also look out for the new album of Fester coming begin 2012 and besides that a project with members from Fester involved called Sincera.
