Does anyone know of any signed or otherwise popular musicians who offer the service of mixing and/or mastering? I know of very few, and would like to know of more that do offer that kind of thing...

James Plotkin offers mastering and other audio services. I just saw him credited with mastering the brand new Lycia album released last month.

Timo Tolkki does as well, although apparently he's not very good...

Oh yea...forgot about Jeff Waters. I know that Ken Sorceron from Abigail Williams does mixing and mastering, too. Thinking about hitting him up my new EP. Any other black metal musicians out there that do mixing and mastering?

Kurt Ballou of Converge records and mixes, but he very rarely does mastering.

I want to say Scott Hull? I'm not really sure, though.

Yes, he does it with the studio name "Visceral Sound" to differentiate himself from the more famous engineer also named Scott Hull. I believe he does mastering, but rarely mixes.

There are quite a few musicians who do all sorts of audio engineering, some of the more notable ones have been mentioned. Is there any reason you're looking for a pro musician rather than a full-time engineer to do it?

I'm gonna be totally honest here...lol

I don't really care so much about the music being insanely polished. It is an EP album, afterall... So for me, this is mostly for the name association--it's mostly for marketing reasons.

With that being said, I do have a trusted and skilled friend in the band Empyreus that will be doing the actual mixing of the EP, and I'll be paying him a couple hundred dollars to do it. This is their EP they released earlier this year: http://empyreus666.bandcamp.com/album/the-burning-path It's totally self-produced. Once it's mixed, I'll be sending it out to get mastered by someone with a more "known" reputation.

Not a musician, but one of the good 'names' to get mastering services from would be Hertz studios.

There are great engineers who can fit mastering work into their schedule and do a great job, for example Jim Morris - ~4 hours for a full-length @ $150/hour IIRC. There are also musicians associated with famous bands who can do terrible things to your music - Kelly Gray's wretched mix of "Enemies of Reality" is a good example. Your best bet is to look through the band/artist pages of bands you admire and see if any of them have production credits, then get in touch with them. Keep in mind that those who are known as engineers are known for a reason, and there are plenty of good musicians who try to get into engineering who aren't very good at it.

My vocalist does the mixing and mastering for our work as well as many other extreme metal bands as well. Take a look and see if you like his work. Don't know how much you'll care but he possesses a degree in audio engineering.

https://soundcloud.com/ipab_productions

EDIT: Don't know how much he'll quote you though, depending on the number/length of the songs. Possibly around US$300 but it could vary greatly, I really don't know :P

I'm actually getting what I'd consider a good deal for mixing from my friend in Empyreus. I think he did a great job on their EP, and he's going to charge me $200 for 5 songs. He goes very in-depth, too, and doesn't glaze over details. The mastering would cost even less, and I'm looking at having Ken Sorceron to do that job.

It depends on the album length, email the details to [email protected] and I can get a quote together.
