Man, a while back everyone was talking about this band (think they're Italian, but not sure) that mixed black metal with electronic (think it was psybient, but again, not sure) in a way that was miraculously actually tasteful and interesting. Does anyone remember the name of this band, I'd like to give it a few more listens.

Can anybody recommend some good ambient/atmospheric black metal? I've fallen in love with the stuff lately. Looking for stuff in the vein of Wolves in the Throne Room, Weakling, Coldworld, and Abigail Williams.

HOW ABOUT SOME STUPIDLY FAST BLACK METAL!

I find this kind of music to be really amusing. Everyone knows of Marduk so please dont rec them! And please no drum machines!

Id liek to find something from the early 2000s or late 90's too. Bands that come to mind are groups like Mater Tenebra and Demonic Chorals. Another band like them would be awesome!

Most Besatt albums, earlyCirith Gorgor albums, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Endstille, Eternal Majesty, Olc Sinnsir. Probably other more obvious ones.

Edit: Thy Primordial was another amazing fast black metal band and I wish they were still around

There I added some links for what I could find a good example of

Hi all. I have a bit of an odd request. Do you know of anyone who has basically taken two black metal tunes, specifically some blast beat sections and mixed them over one another? I had this idea the other day and I think you could get some cool effects.

Check out the post right above you, Progenie Terrestre Pura's U.M.A. is my favorite Black Metal release this year, really cool and unique sense of atmosphere. If you dont mind plenty of effects and a drum machine, You can listen to it on their bandcamp.

I've got a paradoxically easy, but difficult request. I'm looking for something like Mayhem's track "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas." Fast, alive with atmosphere (scratchy, yet warm with audible bass), describable; even catchy riffing, and charismatic and dangerous vocals. Stuff from the 90's prefered.

I know pretty much all the big names in current and old black metal, so this is a bit of a tough request. Vocals similar to Attila's are a big plus, but one of the major things I'm after is the masterful combo of riffs and atmosphere; not overtly melodic like Mgla and definitely not as clean sounding.

Thanks!

Can I assume you already know Frost's "Cursed Again" album? By far the most obvious DMDS worship I've heard.

Behexen's By The Blessing Of Satan is the best DMDS-esque black metal I know. Well, you know the album too, I'm sure of that.

Is Thunderbolt fast enough? Here's also Infernal War: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPTpbfslGpk

Voidhanger is similar to the above bands, but not fast enough for the request perhaps.

Valoton is a rather fast band with excellent riffs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCb0mE2B_6s

Yeah, know this one. Never gave it a fair shot though (like many I'm sure I checked it out just because of Attila). but jeez, maybe it's too good of a rec as it sounds like leftover songs from DMDS. Still not hitting it though.

I absolutely LOVE Horna and Sargiest, but I find Behexen offensively boring and uninspired.

Then have you listened to By The Blessing of Satan? The album surpasses everything Horna and Sargeist have ever made in terms of intensity, and it has some very classic black metal riffing.

Well. I don't want to insist with it if you say you don't like it. It seems strange to me, though.

It's an album plagued with a bad production. Vocals/drums are too loud and the guitar tone is weak and too trebly and it's hard to discern the riffs (which generally seem to be good). The one thing I like about it is the bass, I actually really love that bass-but for wholly other reasons then why I set off here in the first place. I appreciate your recs though, maybe I've been too harsh on these fellas (always liked the first track off their split with Horna- and Horna's side on that split is some of the best bm ever). But again, not what I'm after. Denser production the better, this is on the other spectrum (and the vocals aren't there).

On the DMDS tip, I've only heard of, never heard, an album on the Oaken Shield label by the French band Nebel, called Hymns of Destruction, which supposedly was a "spot-on reworking/reconfiguration" of the Mayhem classic -- at least according to an old Metal Maniacs reviewer whose black metal opinions I almost always agreed with 100% (Nathan Birk). Good luck finding it; it's not even on Youtube.

Myself, I think Nagelfar's Virus West has some occasional DMDS-isms that might not be obvious on first listen. The grainy atmosphere, the hypnotic guitars with a paradoxically warm/cold tone and audible bass, the occasional pseudo-operatic baritones -- all there, especially on "Faden des Schicksals" and "Hellbarn", the latter actually having some of the sniveling gremlin vocals Attila employed through much of DMDS.

edit: I also am in that category of people who almost unconditionally love not just traditional black metal but Finnish black metal specifically, and I just can't get into Behexen. It's like there's some kind of subliminal tone in the music that shuts off the part of my brain receptive to black metal's charm. Mysterious.

I've always found the production to be nearly ideal for black metal. Strange how opinion work, eh?

By The Blessing Of Satan is perfect... Nothing bad about the production at all IMO also, it's one of the only albums where you really don't need to turn the treble up actually. "Celebration of Christ's Fall" is one of my favorite songs ever.

This Nebel?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GevoHXm19YQ

Digging this, production/guitar tone's more what I'm after, along with the vocals and drums (not those inane hyper blasts Behexen had). Might have to buy this cd, although I'd rather just buy the mp3s.

As for Bm production, 3 of my favorite productions are A Blaze in the Northern Sky, DMDS, and Horna's side of their split with Behexen (live takes are awesome). That Behexen CD is just overbearing.

*Edit*
Also, 1349's Liberation's really up my alley. The perfect mixture of cacophonous drums, scratchy guitars and a foreboding low-end. I guess that's another DMDS inspiree.

^Understandable, never knew that Horna side of the Behexen split was a "live" recording but makes sense due to how it sounds. Those other albums (besides DMDS) definitely have that dirty, lo-fi production

Edit: whoops someone got a post in before me so ^x2

both sides of the split are live studio recordings, meaning they were full takes, something that I think is way more "tr0000000" than anything else.

Popping in not to request a rec but rather to just bring attention to an album that most of you probably haven't heard of (yes, even STORMM :o ) -- Heulend Horn - Fragments from the 13th Century. This Argentinian one-man project is the creation of a guy with a separate symphonic dungeon synth band called Mitternacht, and you can hear the influence of that sound in the harmonic/melodic choices on show in this medieval-tinged slab of imaginative, pagan-y black metal. This basically sounds like a more compositionally creative Graveland, with that same grim chainmail vibe, but it's a more varied experience that manages to avoid the monotonous feeling that one sometimes gets from Darken's works. A really nice blend of dark, cold riffwork with ancient instrumental/symphonic narrative passages, medieval-ish interludes, all quite tastefully done despite some noticeable production limitations. Interesting find! Definitely recommended for fans of Graveland or the recent Emyn Muil debut, or just anyone looking for black metal that evokes an unusual, shadowy medieval atmosphere.

Thanks for the heads up Starmere, while being familiar with Mitternacht I dont think I can say the same for Heulend Horn? Though your discription sounds very interesting and something that should be right up my street, especially as I was somewhat dissappointed with Thunderbolts from the Gods, it was an ok listen to be fair but I just could not get past Darken's new approach to the drums, they seemed more over the place than ever and very loud in the mix, not that percussion has been one of his strong points lol Will check this out after work mate, cheers!

Svartidauði is the classic answer.

Most of the band in that style are death metal with black elements. Impetuous Ritual, Adversarial, Sonne Adam, Maveth, Muknal, Void Meditation Cult. Some of the bands make it somewhat difficult to draw the line. Try S.V.E.S.T. for something pretty black.

I really like Kaevum. I got into them a while ago already, but I've kept returning to Natur over and over again. It's really an underground classic of the genre. The album has very raw sounds, but everything sounds powerful. It's hateful black metal, but it's still wrought with melodically pleasant material and great atmosphere.

looking for more current stuff that's like Archgoat, Revenge, and Ruin Lust but without so much goddamn reverb abuse. "moshable" sections are a big plus (picture how Revenge likes to start-stop). Also, atypical vocals for the genre are a big plus (i.e. no Blasphemy clones please).

Well, lots of people point out Immortal as a strong influence, which is definitely there. The closest thing I know of is Siculicidium, but their riffs are something like a mixture of Inquisition's groovy chords and more traditional European riffing styles. They've also got really dry, monotone vocals that are sort of like Dagon's. Unfortunately they're just not really anywhere near as good as Inquisition, if you ask me.
