Grand Supreme Blood Court - Piled Up for the Scavengers

This is appropriately old school enough for my tastes.

Napalm Death - Utilitarian

Haven't heard this one in a little while, so I thought I'd bust it out again. It's pretty much what you'd expect from modern Napalm Death, but I like this one more than their last one (or maybe couple).

Anacrusis - Blood in the Water

Yet another newly released track from the long awaited Parallax Error double album. Again, Kenn has succeeded. Basically all these songs just sound like a continuation of Screams and Whispers, so needless to say, I remain excited about their release. Who knows when that'll be at this rate, though...

Kongh - Sole Creation, from Sole Creation

Finally getting around to giving this album a listen. Still on the first track of four, but I can tell already that I am going to enjoy all of them.

Eyes of Fire - The End Result of Falling..., from Ashes to Embers

I've owned this album for years now and still find ways to sneak into disc playing rotation every several months. I've heard very mixed reviews for this piece and this band in general, but I doubt I will ever get tired of it.

Blind Guardian - The Last Candle

One of their best songs, easily.

Pharaoh - Leave Me Here to Dream, off Bury the Light

The interplay between the bass lines and the guitar playing on this thing is amazing.

NP: October Falls, "The Plague of a Coming Age"

Not sure if this is more atmospheric or black metal, but holy fuck is it good. Love the melodies, leads and vocals. Getting better with every listen. Perfect for the autumn.

One of those records which makes me really want to orchestrate some kind of fun, black metal worshipping cult, with esoteric paraphernalia all over the place.

NP: Candlemass - Solitude

Every time I listen to this record, the more epic and beautiful it seems to become.

King Diamond - Abigail

Their best album by far, in contrast to the sequel which is their absolute worst, also by far.

'Conspiracy' and 'The Eye' want a word with you.

Deceased... - In the Laboratory of Joyous Gloom

Deceased's last album may well be my second-favorite of theirs, after 'As the Weird Travel On'. Never a dull moment with this band.

Sabbat - Blood for the Blood God (the single)

Raw thrash about the Ruinous Powers. Nerdy as hell, and pretty fucking awesome.

Sunrise - Trust Your Soul

So glad I finally have a version of this album playable all the way through via iPod. So damn good. Stands right up with the best power metal of the late 2000s.

Paradise Lost - Mercy

Everything about this song is awesome. Another one of those tunes that are impossibly nostalgic because practically no one else in the state of Pennsylvania knows who they are, yet somehow it takes me back.

Auspex "Resolutio"

Haven't dusted this off in a long time. This band has more in common with the Japanese power metal bands I've been listening to lately than any Euro power metal band, IMO.

Vektor - Tetrastructural Minds

Lots of great riffs and plenty of aggressive energy. Here's to hoping they release a third album sometime soon.

Riot - Should I Run

I swear, Mike DiMeo sounds almost exactly like Russell Allen on this album, and it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Listening for the first time to Heretic Cult Redeemer. Kinda enjoyable, but also pretty forgettable at first glance. Anti-climactic songstructure and the album flow is atrocious. Makes me wish I was listening to Void Meditation Cult. Maybe I'll just have to give it a few more listens, but right now I don't feel terribly motivated to do so.
Anyone else have an opinion on HCR?

After some considerable underground hype, this has been a very disappointing listen for me. Very unadventurous Doom

Busy listening to comeback albums.

Carcass - Surgical Steel
Didn't mind it, but each song seems modeled after very discrete points in the band's past. Songwriting wise it doesn't feel like an album with a unified sound or purpose. If you take some of the better songs outside of the context of the album though they are pretty cool, but nothing that you couldn't get from one of the many other Carcass-worship bands in existence.

Gorguts - Colored Sands
The more I listen to it the more I love it. This is, for my money, the best extreme metal "comeback" album by a very large margin. Contrasting this with my complaints about Surgical Steel, the songwriting on this album is so polished without being compromising or boring, and the entire band's sound takes a giant step forward from FWTH (though FWTH took a sidestep from Obscura). A lot of bands who've returned to the scene with new albums often just do what is safe and reiterate what they've done in the past (and in the case of bands like Autopsy, I think that's pretty enjoyable), but I find CS is totally worthwhile on its own. Would be a great album in 2013 without the Gorguts name behind it.

I'm fairly convinced that these dudes are in possession of a time machine.
