Review -

It took me a couple listens to appreciate them, but I love the drums in the intro. Coupled with the droning they make me think of one who has somehow traveled forward into time and is beholding the bleak nothingness that is now earth. The landscape is so bleak in fact that they can only hear the beating of their heart (drums) and as they slowly become more disturbed at the void the beating intensifies (stronger drum beat). The yawn of nothingness is so great and the traveler seems to panic as the drums cut out. Great beginning.

The sounds and music at the start of ‘The Awakening of Planet Earth’ were truly disturbing and fitting to the atmosphere. Well done. After the first few moments this yawning bass started and I felt like I was being drawn into the mouth of a horribly dark, murky cave. Or in this context, the void-barren landscape trying to draw some sort of life back into it (the traveler). Also I hear this sort of sloshing sound, like water. Perhaps it is a ghastly remnant of Earth? Or a hallucination on the travelers behalf while recalling how vibrant the Earth was before?

The next track ‘Mass Apocalypse of Planet Earth’ was a great contrast to the previous track, not just in volume, but also in the movement of the drone melody. It feels like waves of emptiness, perhaps clouds of dust drifting hauntingly across the landscape. With my computer bass speakers the low rumbling could be felt as well as heard, adding another level to experiencing the atmosphere. The drop in volume towards the middle and again near the end was a great effect musically. The fade out at the end was very well done. You really nailed the ebb and flow feel of the drone in this track.

I’m going to say that ‘Pulsating Drone’ really fucked with my mind when I listened to it at night laying on my floor. I don’t know if you are familiar with it, but the rhythmic pattering reminded me of the indie horror game SCP-807B where you walk down an infinite staircase trying to get to the bottom and hear something following you several flights of stairs up. The ‘footstep’ sounds are almost identical. Damn, this track is disturbing. Anyway, this track to me really showcases just how empty the world in the album is with the only sounds the character hears is their own footsteps and the wind. Also, the dissonant windy sounds at the end totally sounded like the monster finally getting you. I’m getting goose bumps just writing this (did you take inspiration from the game?). Fantastic job of creating the atmosphere.

Coming from the atmosphere of the last track, ‘Desolate Wastelands’ reinforces the fact that this world you’re experiencing is a really bad place to be. More so than when the album began it has an unsettling feeling, like something gnawing at the edges of your consciousness. Like the song title suggests, it seems like wherever one goes in this world it’s just the same bleakness, nothingness. The steadiness of the drone and the dynamics really added to the feel of the track.

The carrying on the dynamic over into ‘Earth Lives On’ and then the sort of ‘wake-up’ call crescendo suggests that something about Earth does indeed live on. Perhaps even in total desolation there is meaning, maybe even purpose? Through walking the wastelands the traveler seems to have learned something from this void, a revelation, as suggested by the melodic phrase at the end of the track. I thought moment was a very interesting contrast to the drone from the rest of the album.

Something about the ‘outro’ track seems almost… lively. Yet no less desolate at the same time. It was reminiscent of the ‘intro’ but with the change in the feel of the album that occurred in the last few tracks. Like some sort of desperation.

Overall, I loved the album. It flowed well and had tones of story and meaning in it (to me at least). The concept came across extremely well in my opinion and the atmosphere and musicality was well-crafted throughout.

New Review -

The second offering from enigmatic UK drone act Orbis is yet another dark and depressing affair. This is extremely intense dark music, quite possibly the darkest music I have come across since I started this webzine. Orbis is the sound of post apocalyptic barren landscapes, with devastated wastelands that are perpetually extinct of life. ‘The Awakening Of Planet Earth’ has a devilish, menacing pulse-like rhythm and a blood-curdling static weighted, wave like drawl. ‘Mass Apocalypse Of Planet Earth’, smoulders and prowls forth at a tortoise pace, similar to a demonic mist, engulfing everything strewn in its misty path. Every now and then a frightening buzz pierces the obscure calm. If interested, then pick up this on cassette as it features three extra tracks on side B (Cosmic Dust Particles Of Earth Reforming #1, Have Mercy As The Stars Meet In The Darkened Sky, Cosmic Dust Particles Of Earth Reforming #2). These three tracks are regarded as bonus tracks by the artist, and are well worth checking out.

Cosmic Dust Particles Of Earth Reforming is available to buy direct from Darkness Shade Records.

Orbis is:
Shade (All Instruments, Compositions, Arrangement).
