For most people it's not really much more than moments of silence and the aforementioned Facebook flag sharing, which is entirely appropriate and not a big deal. The media stuff is where it can go overboard.

On an unrelated note, looking for work blows (and does not having work).

You know how I like to bitch and moan about how shitloads of metalheads think that "shoegaze" is a word that means "bands that combine elements of post-rock and/or shoegaze with black metal"? Well, in a hilarious turn of irony, apparently the non-metalhead post-rock community now largely believes that "shoegaze" means the exact same thing. So, congratulations, Neige, you've somehow managed to appropriate an entire genre tag from a legitimate genre with your boring sad guy bullshit.

The only thing sad about his music is how depressingly shitty it is. No melancholy in it whatsoever, it's the opposite.

Huh...the biggest irony of all maybe being that Neige claimed to not know a thing about shoegaze and was apparently surprised to hear people using this term to describe his music.

I've listened to some shoegaze bands, such as My Bloody Valentine and Ride, and to a greater extent Slowdive, and none of those really sound like Alcest.

Yeah, it just annoys me to no end for some reason. It would be sorta like if at some point some guy listened to Sear Bliss and was like, "huh, this is like black metal/swing" and then five years later 78% of the internet thought "swing" just meant "stuff that sounds like Sear Bliss".

When I was walking to the bus stop this morning, I saw a guy wearing an Ill Nino shirt.
You guys forgot they were a band? I certainly fucking did. I'm not happy remembering them either.

Holy crap blast from the past there. Now there is a group that totally dropped off the face of the universe.

I know we don't have too many political weirdness things around here, but a minor item caught my eye. The local right wing (that's only superficially communist for you US people) party National Coalition's youngster league released a new manifesto of whatever the hell they think is the future. Among many things, some of which I agree with, some of which I find repulsive, there's a gem. They want to repeal the law that requires mandatory winter tires on cars. Because we don't have enough death on the roads, maybe? Because their fanbase can't afford a second set of tires on the Porsche daddy bought them? Because we are, like, being totally oppressed by The Man and stuff?

Like. Umm. What the fuck??

Is there, like, a National Motorists Association in Finland?

There's probably something like that here, but it's probably not something that will try to make the roads more dangerous than they already are in the winter. The proposal is frankly a retarded idea, and they don't even give any reasoning behind it.

Yes, or mandatory seat belts, motorcycle helmets, or blood alcohol limits. Retards should only be allowed to drive padded bicycles with training wheels for the first three years.

That just seems like such a random, inconsequential thing to put in a manifesto. We're going to fight to lower taxes, raise employment, and end winter tire tyranny!

Exactly. They do mention their will to lower the cost of transport, but that can't be it, since a car does not have both tires under it at the same time, the tire cost per km will stay the same in the medium term, winter tires or no. The total wear is the same. Morons.

Well, I know around here certain types of tires might possibly be illegal. I'm pretty sure tire chains are definitely illegal. I think the reasoning is that they fuck up the road surface or something like that, which then costs taxpayer money to fix.

Am I the only one tired of 9/11 remembrance?

Surely the old patriots and patriarchs that surround me down here in America's retirement home would fancy me "unpatriotic" for that statement, but it's true. After 12 years, the force-fed, throat-clogging memorial atmosphere that comes around every year has become too draining. I understand the tragedy involved in the loss of near 3,000 people in a highly brazen fashion, but after 12 years, surely those who lost someone have had ample time to grieve and move on? I'm really curious as to when 9/11 will become just another Pearl Harbor; a note in the high school history book that we dedicate a 5 minute recap to on the nightly news every year before moving on to sports.

Maybe true, but I wasn't personally affected by 9/11. So it's not up to me. If people who did lose loved ones in the event want to mourn, it's fine by me and I won't begrudge them that. I personally don't think much about 9/11 except a few minutes each year when we have a memorial thing somewhere, but if people were personally affected by the tragedy then they can do what they want. It's not our place to tell them otherwise.

Tell me about it. I have a job, but I need moe money so I've been applying for better ones. I guess the good news is I'm getting interviews (after doing the full on corporate "address the selection criteria" shit), but I keep getting knocked back. A lot of it seems to be that they find someone with equal technical skills but who speaks a second language. It's fucking depressing - how the fuck am I meant to learn Chinese at 35 years old? Why should I need to? meh. Still, these are not entry-level tech jobs, so I sort of understand them wanting to maximise their chances. But it's still depressing.

Pfft, I was just HAPPY they were doing open interviews at KFC/A&W. Of course I didn't get the job.

That's freaking crazy, what's your degree in? Also all this job talk is making me really thankful that I haven't had to look for a job in quite some time. I had no idea that market was so bad as my place of employment seems to be a veritable revolving door as of late. Sorry to hear that guys.

Anyway, my problem is a bit different. I'm trying to make a 25-30k pay jump, so the competition is harder than it would be if I were chasing any old job. But if it takes a year or two, that's ok I guess - it's a strategic move rather than one born out of urgent need. Worst case scenario is I finish my Masters by correspondence (around a year left to go), then focus on looking for jobs in that field. I'll be the most brutal fucking Librarian there ever was haha.

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!

I've just been to an Asia shop for the first time in my life. I think I died and went to heaven. Next time I have money I'm gonna spend a hundred euros there, so much awesome foodstuffs to try, tons of instant noodles, tons of sauces, tons of cool ingredients for making Asian food, and on top of that they have a good selection of Asian beers, it is like the most amazing place in this entire city!!

Oh yeah man, those shops are really great. I live about six blocks from Chinatown in DC (one of the larger Chinatowns in America) and I buy a fair amount of my food and liquor around there. Great prices, an amazing selection of delicious things, and if you go there often enough - they start treating you like just another Asian dude. It's pretty awesome.

Last time I was there I bought some extra spicy home-made curry stuff, some really fresh and delicious rice noodles, and two Whitehouse cassettes some dude was selling out of his car

The only thing I frequently buy at my local Asia shop is Sriracha and Dutch peanut butter. I tried my hands on Asian cuisine once and I ruined it. Never found the motivation for a second attempt.

Yeah Asian grocery stores are awesome, I can spend tons of time just wandering up and down aisles marveling at the products. There was an awesome little Korean store by my old place, I’d go in once a month to buy seaweed snacks and any ramen noodle bowls that had no English on it. They were almost all very spicy, and most of them tasted like seafood.

Oh, and Milkis! It’s a milk soda that the label describes as "New feeling of soda beverage". I figured it would be gross but I bought it once on a lark and loved it.

Regarding weed, I believe you can't be charged for possessing a small amount (can't remember what the cutoff is), but it's still illegal to sell it, and for the most part to grow as well. It seems very accepted by a huge cross-section of different demographics, but I still wouldn't like to be caught with it by the police.

Edit:
Nice post, Drone. I'm really just a dabbler in "punk culture" (and mostly just in the past few years) but I think I've observed some of the things you point out as being problematic right here in my own city. The drunkenness, certainly, and the weird fixation with Nazism, both of which cause a lot of unnecessary posturing and fighting within the scene.

Pretty sure drunk homeless crusty's aren't really a true representative of what punk is today. Also you live in Germany? I have honestly never heard of a punk band from Germany. Crossover yes, very much so but never a punk band. Probably not the best country for punk I would say.

Edit: I feel like hardcore kids are more into the nazi ideals due to the interest in Death in June and the hitler youth haircuts. But that is just me.

Why would you say that, Wizard? Don't think Germans are angry enough? :D

What?? There are hundreds of punk bands from Germany, most of them better than what other countries have produced. You probably haven't heard of them because they don't enjoy much international success due to the language barrier.

Explain this to an American. I thought that pot was legal in Canada, but the article refers to the pot plants as illegal and criminal?

 refer

I would love to say that was intentional...

As for Asian stores. We have large one in a predominantly Asian neighborhood across the train tracks, and while I've never gotten the nerve to actually try any of the food, I have sunk far too much money into their energy drink cooler. Unlike American energy drinks, these don't have sugar; it's literally just ginseng, water and honey. And, being a massive fan of the whole "chopsocky" film genre, I end up with at least 1 or 2 DVDs every time I go there.
