Blasphemy, Archgoat, Beherit, etc...

What kind of scales did these guys generally fall under? etc?

I can write basic "shit riffs" but I'd kinda like to do something with a bit more... finesse...

thanks

hahahaa you are talking about Black Witchery, Blasphemy, Archgoat, and Beherit and mouthing finesse. It's completely and totally about feel. If you can't come up with good riffs and saw them together in an interesting way then don't bother.

Well, perhaps I should have made myself a bit more clear... I would like a sound "similar" to them, but with a bit more finesse.

I apologize :D

Having written some songs in the style for a project i was involved with, and having spent some time around Black Witchery and know how they operate, minimalism is the name of the game. I wrote a bunch of stuff like this in a EXTREMELY short time frame, and the results have been praised. I don't know if it is a testament to my writing ability or to the somewhat shallow nature of this music, but I suspect it's more the latter. I don't mean this to say simple music is bad. I tend to prefer simple music. I just think that the style comes from an inherently rudimentary foundation, and scales, technique, and theory are generally an afterthought, if even a consideration at all.

Essentially what I'm telling you is set a drum machine to a blast beat at around 220bpm, tune to B, throw a ton of distortion on and fuck around. You'll come up with "usable" results soon enough.

That's okay. But honestly they don't have some well developed technique. You are already thinking it's much more involved than just writing simple cool riffs like chainsaw Omega said. I have a band that plays in this style and it's literally. I want this to start out blasting and I write a blast riff and then I just smash a few more together think about some dynamics in how to arrange it and then run through it. If you are grimacing and bobbing your head a bit subconciously then you are on to something. Maybe one of the main things to think about is not how the riff is soully but the whole song will be written/played. So some riff that might be just 2 simple notes will sound awesome layered with some blower bass and single foot blasting.

It's much simplier than you think and it's all in what tone you use and just the gut quality of your riffs.

Thanks, gentleman. I appreciate the comments.

I love the "blower bass" mention too. Put a smile on my face. hahaha

Best way to figure out would be to learn a song of theirs and see how it's done, IMO. The only song I've ever bothered to learn was The Gate Of Nanna and it literally took me just ONE listen because it was so stupidly simple. Do it with attitude and it'll work.

Agree about the singlefoot blasting for this genre hehe

haha you are welcome. A large of the overall package for these songs is to get that proper tone and the correct drumming for it.

If you get some stuff together post it up here!

If you want a really basic scale idea for this stuff, tune down to D or lower, and use frets 0, 1, 3, 4 on your lowest string, and occasionally frets 2 and 3 on your second string. Combinations of those notes will give you that murky bestial feel. You can, of course, expand, but it seems like you were asking for a basic starting point, plus, limiting yourself is a big part of this music. Check out Revenge, Conqueror, Teitanblood, Abhorer, Demoncy, and Embrace of Thorns if you're looking for more similar stuff too.

Black Witchery: drop B. Frets 0 1 3 4. Constant tremolo and power chords. You're done.

I don't think it makes a difference too much. play in standard be lazy and play in drop. your choice.

Try "YES".

Drop ANYTHING involves the bottom 2 open strings forming a power chord. I'll leave you to figure out the profoundness of the concept.

I've seen them play. They play in drop B. The power chord in a dropped tuning is easier because it means barring the first 3 strings instead of playing them with your first and 3rd fingers

I'm pretty sure Black Witchery play in some form of standard tuning... Tregenda doesn't use one finger power chords when he plays... they are standard shape.
