http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Rat ... 3540355802

What's this? And why does a side-project of all members of such a famous band have no reviews, and I've never seen anyone talk about it? Has anyone heard it? Is it any good?

I'm listening to a track from it right now on YouTube. So far it's really lurching, crawling death/doom. I'm guessing it's not talked about because it has riffs, and Drudkh fans don't really like riffs.

This is good stuff. DM is a genre that I am slowly inching towards, and this slow, crawling, doom laden style is really appealing to me. Thanks for the heads up.

Death metal haters need to listen to the olde stuff first.
Originally, death metal WAS about atmospherics, dark riffs, demonic vocals, dirty production, chaotic sections mixed up with despair-ridden doom breaks, etc.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the ultra-clean wankery, triggered drums, pig squeals, or hardcore breaks that plague modern death metal.

Occasionally a good newer band like Portal, Mitochondria, Grave Miasma, or Dead Congregation will grab my attention, but usually I only care about the pre-1995 era.....

There's plenty of good modern death metal. Dig deeper.

Ignore the OSDM revival, it sucks almost universally.

Ok, "those with pre-1995 musical values" I should have said.....

Anything with a hint of urban groove, and I make like Maiden and Run to the Hills :p

Some of the OSDM revival sucks, but stuff like Cruciamentum, Funebrarum, Necros Christos, Slugathor etc most certainly does not.

This year has seen some great shit like Beyond, Tyrant Goatgaldrakona...

Yes, bring back the DARKNESS in death metal!

Percussive groove-oriented stuff bores the fuck out of me.

yeah that new beyond record kills it. lots of good 'revival' bands though that are well above average.

Did we just witness a M-A paradigm shift? OSDM revival band now suck, they are sooo August!
Who's in charge of sending out the memo?

Note: I thought OSDM revival bands sucked way back in July.

lol, truthfully I don't recall any revivalist band that sucked that play oSDM. People saying so kinda reek of tryhardism.

Yeah I had the same thought. It's definitely one of the better side projects of Roman. After hearing the terribly sterile Old Silver Key, I had little hope when I heard about Rattenfanger. But it's good death metal. Worth checking out.

Oh, Drudkh does have riffs. Three on average per a ten minutes long song.

I haven't listened to Rattenfänger, but it might be worth checking out. Blood of Kingu, especially the debut album, shows that Roman Saenko has great abilities as a songwriter.

I know, isn't it GREAT??? :D

This is good stuff, but creeping death/doom isn't on my listening palate too often. Reminds me a lot of later Celtic Frost/Triptykon. I like how Drudkh use a similar amount of riffs and content in this band as they do in their black metal, but I guess since they're playing death/doom and not foresty black metal it's okay to like it now...? Whatever. This is curious, but it's a side project. You know where the real gold is.

It's not bad... I'll have to listen to them further to make a real decision. It sounds like Hate Forest meets Winter.

Yeah, people really need to get over themselves. And how is Slugathor part of the recent revival of OSDM when they've released their debut in 2003?! And how is it that Slugathor sucks, and even more from the perspective of someone who lives for death/doom??? It's fucking Finnish death metal bitches!

There was no need for that cause it shows at how much I hit the nail on the head about your crybaby and completely dismissive attitude. It must have struck a nerve.

This band was spoken about on this board I'm certain cause I believe that's why I went to go seek it out. You might have seen it if you didn't have that sort of blinders-on outlook on anything that you figure would fall into some sort of genre you hate based on the fact that other people enjoy it.

I think you are the last person to call anyone a crybaby (two thirds of your posts consist of whining), and stupidity certainly doesn't strike a nerve.

Sure, I pick out genres based on whether other people like or dislike them. Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? That you even dare say it without blushing in shame shows how completely you have lost touch with reality.

Sure, make outrageous claims, back them up with absolutely nothing, then when you're called out for being a retard tuck your tail between your legs and run. File that under the two thirds of whining, as described above.

(My suggestion: Grow a pair.)

Back to the band at hand, I'm curious to if this was a one off thing, of if they plan on releasing any more material just being a studio only band like Owl. Basically releasing material as they feel the desire to create it.

I mean, that seems to be how most of Roman's bands operate. I do wonder if the individual output of his bands is going to increase since two projects were shut down this year (Dark Ages and Old Silver Key). That pretty much leaves him with Drudkh, Blood of Kingu, and this. He's certainly not as prolific as he was in the early-to-mid aughties, though.

Honestly, I think Hate Forest is the most interesting thing Roman's done.

I mean, I like the first 3 Drudkh albums and the first Blood of Kingu album (haven't heard the others), but c'mon!! He seems to be taking credit for retreading the same paths as Burzum, Summoning, Graveland, and Falkenbach back in the 90s, who did it much better I may add!!

Dark Ages was pretty cool, but there's also better dark ambient out there.....

Hate Forest though can truly stand the test of time as something definitely creative, if not original.

Yea, I can see that. this all could've been a collection of riffs and ideas that didn't fit in any of those other projects and finally enough piled up that it was worth taking the time and composing it to a finalized project/product.

Hate Forest I have one cd of. I like it but it didn't really reach me to pick up even more of it.

The last one was his worst, but Battlefields sounds like a cross between Graveland and Bolt Thrower, or perhaps like another band everyone seems to have long forgotten: Bloodthorn!!

Also, Scythia is worth checking out. Like Aeternus but much darker!!!! "Attila" is always a track I try to stick into my black metal DJ playlists.....
