Morgion - Encased in Glass

Far heavier than the other Morgion stuff and so far the material that I've heard of them. Love how clear the death metal roots of this band are evident here.

Revenance - Five Shots, from Omen Of Tragedy

Pulled this one off the shelf not too long ago for the first time in years... Wonder what ever happened to these guys?

Not a whole lot, sadly. Couple of them play in Mother Brain (which is pretty decent death/grind/hardcore along the lines of a very raw Cephalic Carnage) and one of that pair was involved with The Partisan Turbine. Not a bad pair of projects but neither is anywhere near as good as Omen of Tragedy.

That's too bad, I really would like to hear some new material.

NP: King Giant - Appomattox, from Dismal Hollow

Interesting. Sounds like Danzig decided to cover Primordial

Gorguts - An Ocean of Wisdom

That hooky melody that recurs throughout this song is pretty damn awesome. They managed to make something legitimately catchy, so I guess there's that.

Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac

First time I've heard these guys. Pretty awesome straight ahead metal attack. Will have to check out more.

Grave Upheaval - side of Manticore split

I must have listened to this and the demo 12" a million times in the past few months. Devastatingly heavy, oppressively dark/obscure atmosphere, not sure any other death/doom band can touch this at the moment. I'm fiending for their full-length album to be released.

Arghoslent - The Banners of Castille

Speaking of being untouchable, Sacriphyx came close but this still reigns supreme as far as this type of metal is concerned. RIFF RIFF RIFF

Satyricon - Satyricon (album)

After spending yesterday immersed in this album I progressed from 'incredibly boring (except for Phoenix, Walker Upon The Wind and Nekrohaven)' via 'hmm, maybe I get it a lot better now' and 'decent' to 'I think I actually do like this album.' Sure, it has its weaknesses, but I personally love Phoenix and the overall production. And the doom laden atmosphere works for me too. The analog recording/production gives it a certain feel and sound which is more natural and closer to how they sound live. On the weaknesses: Yes, Frost has not a lot to do, (but then again: I do love mid tempo double bass drum rhythms), yes, especially the first four songs are quite interchangeable (but they feel to as a fitting prelude to the next three songs) and yes, it isn't black metal anymore (but neither was Volcano or Age Of Nero).

I do not agree with the scores given in the reviews I read until now (6 out of 7 or 9 out of 10). It's a nice enough album until now, but I wouldn't score it above 8 out 10 at the moment. There isn't enough variation for that; two songs out of ten is a bit too little.

Putrevore - Macabre Kingdom

This has to be the most Finnish sounding Swedish death metal out there. One of Rogga's best works

Fyrdung - Framåt!

Great RAC, and also later great NSBM (or "black/viking")...

Taake - Fra Vadested til Vaandesmed, from Noregs Vaapen

Seems like a fitting listen as I am right in the middle of the blackest part of the night.

Remembrance - Ageless Fever, from Fall, Obsidian Night

Definitely not motivation to be productive music. I think I will just keep procrastinating then.

The Ruins of Beverast - Between Bronze Walls

So good. Chilling atmosphere...like being trapped in a cathedral with a bunch of decaying dead bodies.

Tribulation - The Horror

I saw this band 2010 at Party San Open Air, thought there were pretty good, and then forgot about them, until now.

Njiqahdda - In the Seven Woods EP

It appears all black metal is gone from their sound at this point. In fact very little metal if at all. This appears to be straight up psychedelic rock. It's still absolutely wonderful and extremely catchy. It goes to show that the nly thing you can expect from this band is the unexpected (and quality :) )

I've always thought similar things, particularly about that song. His voice sounds like a god damn avalanche in a massive cathedral!

Riot - On Wings of Eagles

One of my favorite jams by Riot and on Thundersteel, so catchy and powerful!

Nothing really to be said, great, classic death metal.

Exodus - Exodus

Recently re-listened to Bonded by Blood properly for the first time since I was first getting into metal, and by god, it sounds even better now, armed with a proper knowledge of thrash, than it did then.

Icarus - Love as Laughter
Some of the most beautiful and ambient indie rock I've ever heard. The vocals are unique but eerily ring of Eddie Vedder, and these people know how to apply the strengths of their amps. I feel the need to lie down in a field and listen to this track while staring at the sky (i.e. tomorrow). Seriously, drop everything and go listen to this song.
