CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by http://www.masterful-magazine.com

Image

By masterful-magazine

Formed in 2004 as Cryptic Death this band released a couple of demos and promos before changing name to Chaossworn in late 2009. This EP was originally released as a promotional demo early this year, but is now re-released for wider distribution with improved artwork and packaging through American label Abyss Records. The three tracks of this EP present somber melodic Swedish death metal in the vein of Mors Principium Est. Opening track 'Crowned & Winged' has Chaossworn more death metal faced approach with sorrowful melodies and excellent riffing. 'Bringer Of Storms' is initially a more black metal oriented track, but the doomier conclusion greatly adds to the strength of this track. 'Chalice Of Black Flames', the last track, is once again more death metal faced but the excellent morose melodies add some spice to the proceedings. Recorded in 2009 at Bothnia Studios. Mixed and engineered by Anton Johansson. Mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound. The pristine artwork, design and lay-out make this a band to look out for. If they play their cards right, Chaossworn might just be picked up by a bigger label in a few years from now. Abyss Records has unearthed a gem with this band, hopefully they'll be able to unlock their full potential on a debut full length.

BANE (Serbia) "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" DIGI CD review by opium89

Image

By opium89

First thing announcing the atmosphere of this album is unquestionably its cover. By staring at it a bit longer you may notice all the emotions embedded in the music. Music will guide you from chaotic state, through hate, darkness, anger, sadness, to the loss of all emotions, to an empty state in which one is unable to feel. But let’s not judge the book by it’s cover.

First chapter: “Chaos”. Skipping the intro that usually sets the right atmosphere, the album starts with heavy drum and guitar hits, followed by a very powerful and mean theme. Further on, combining different growling and screaming vocals and various drum patterns, they make their music “wanna go out of control”, yet it is controlled by using slower passages. The third song continues where the second stops by going totally out of control. Confusion. Chaos.

Just before it’s too much, the chaotic noise is calmed down by a melodic instrumental that leads the listener to the second chapter: “Darkness”. Although themes are still fast and grim, one can also hear a strong death metal influence. Tempo and rhythm changes. Strong brakes, and heavy riff parts make this part different, more defined and sharper from previous.

“Emptiness”. The last chapter. “Inherited Infection” introduces slow doomish melodies between the fast parts of the song. The slow parts finally prevail during the penultimate song on the album. The melancholic melody, heavy chords and deep growls call for emptiness. The album ends with an eerie, empty, instrumental. The quest is fulfilled, the listener is taken through chaos, darkness and emptiness.

Speaking of genres, this album is a combination of many. Although they consider their music black death metal, there are influences of almost all metal sub-genres. Starting from the slow parts typical of doom metal, heavy parts influenced by old school death metal, to wide range of vocals typical of all extreme metal sub-genres. Sharp, tight and bright production adds modern, at some points industrial feel. Simple, but wisely fitted arrangements make it easy to listen, but keeping the listener’s attention. The lyrics are filled with hate, disappointment, sadness and anger.

Honestly, I have to agree with Zlabog’s conclusion. Away from combining all that has been already heard, “Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness” does not bring innovations. This is the only reason for the lower grade. But after listening to this album, I’m looking forward to their future releases, hoping they will contain stronger personal touch!

FESTER (Norway) "Silence" Remastered DIGI CD review by http://darkdoomgrinddeath.blogspot.com

Image

By Occult Black Metal

Fester/Silence/Abyss Records/2011 CD Re-Issue Review
Fester where a band from Norway that played a mixture of black, doom, and death metal that recently had their other album reviewed in this zine and this is a review of their 1995 album which was recently re-issued by Abyss Records in 2011.

Drums range from slow to midpaced drumming with not much in the ways of fast playing or blast beats, while the keyboards when they are utilized bring a dark sound to the music with overdominating, as for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful tone with some progressive sounding metal riffing.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to midpaced riffs that combine death, black and doom metal together with a great amount of rtaditional metal influences with some thrash style riffing being used on one song and melody, while the lead guitars are very melodic and progressive sounding metal guitar solos, as for the accoustic guiars whwen they are utilized they use finger picking and full chords to add a more dark, tragic and progressive sound to the music.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams mixd in with some grim sounding whispered vocals and on a couple of songs there are some spoken word passages, while the lyrics cover ddark and depessive themes that hace somewhat a feel of a classic gothic novel with some nuture orientated lyrics being added in, as for the production it sounds very dark and somewhat raw but still professional enough to the point where you can hear all of the musical instruments.

In my opinion this was a great album from Fester and while it is more melodic and experimental than the previous release, I still thought this was a good well put together album, if you are looking for something that was very different sounding even for the 90's, you should check out this recording. RECEMMONDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Silent Is The Raven" "Voces From The Wood" "My World Of Thoughts" and "Precaution". RECEMMONDED BUY.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by Pest Webzine

Image

Posted by Alrinack

Maax defines as being heavy trash black metal, this is not fake, listening to "Six Pack Witchcraft", several sensations through me! This sound makes me think both pleasantly Venom, that the album times by Slayer "Undisputed Attitude"!
An intro and 4 songs quite enjoyable, this album does not transcend the style, but good use the classic elements of the genre! Their "trash'n roll" is leading to, feel like blaster, scream.. you can feel their influence easily, this fine blend of different musical movements, makes this album attractive ..
I recommend it, waiting to see what will result the life of the group ....

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by http://www.metalunderground.com

Image

By sonictherapy

Every now and then, something oblique or left-of-center gets released that beckons a further listen. The Gardnerz' new one, "The System of Nature," is one such offering. Hailing from Stockholm, this quartet give us an interesting CD rich in a folkloric black metal sound that only a Northern European band could formulate. It was mixed and mastered by their drummer, Juan Pablo Donoso, down in Santiago.
From the get go, "The System of Nature" has a slower, quiet solitude to its overall sound that also belies a good, latent undercurrent of black metal. The sound is both bleak and stark, making for evocative mood music. "Incident" has some good serpentine guitar leads that entwine themselves nicely around the song body, complemented by the sinister vocals of Niklas Ankarbranth. "Your Final Solution" takes plowed-into leads and layers the guitar into a sophisticated song. One thing that The Gardnerz know how to do is change up direction and actually write songs that have movement to them, a lot like the progressive style reminiscent of Atheist.
"The System of Nature" is seeped in acoustic intros and song breaks as well. "The Art of Suffering" simmers with a graceful wrath, while "Shift in Thought" takes the acoustic riffage into a controlled nihilism of leads - transporting the listener into a desolate state of mind. Throughout the release, a dark theme of beauty prevails, evocative of an austere existence. This works very well for the bulk of the songs as a unifying theme.
The body and songwriting of tracks such as "Flaw in the Axiom" are fluid with charming simplicity, and the bass line in "More or Less" adds nice structure, but sometimes the guitar leads tend to be the achilles heel of this release. You'll see good leads by Wilhelm Lindh and another sessionist they brought in, but songs such as "Confusion" exemplify how that standard circular guitar lead employed over and over becomes redundant. That all-too-distinct guitar riff permeates many of the tracks and needs to be varied a lot more, as it sounds like they are running out of ideas.
The Gardnerz do have a very interesting, distinct ambient folk sound that highlights them from other bands in the scene. They have provided a good ethereal backdrop of sound with "The System of Nature" and would be more evocative if they would just work on some of the elements that comprise the body of their songs.

Highs: Nice ambient folkloric black metal
Lows: Some redundant elements and songwriting.
Bottom line: "The System Of Nature" is decent evocative mood music

Rating: 3.5/5

NONEXIST (Sweden) Interview by The Wizard of Noz

Image

By Noswal Nevik

1. Start off by introducing yourself and what is your role in your band?

Hello! My name is Johan Reinholdz and I play guitar, bass, and other various instruments in Nonexist.

2. So Nonexist has returned after quite a long hiatus, why reform now?

Because we really felt like writing more music and also playing live which we haven't done before. I've always had a plan to do a second Nonexist-album and actually wrote a whole album which I more or less discarded ´cause it wasn't good enough. Then in 2009-2010 I came up with some songs that pleased me more so then I got stoked about doing a new album.

3. Tell me a little about the other members of the band? And do any of you play in other bands?

It's me and Johan Liiva - ex Carnage/Furbowl/Arch Enemy on vocals doing the band in the studio. Besides Nonexist I also play guitar in Andromeda and Skyfire.
Then live we have Linus Abrahamson from my other band Andromeda on bass. He also plays in Edge of a Circle by the way. And then on drums and guitar we have Joakim Strandberg-Nilsson and Johan Aldgård, both from the band Faithful Darkness.

4. Tell me a little about the releases you have and where they are available for purchase?

We've put out two albums: "Deus Deceptor" in 2002 by New Hawen/Century Media/Toy's Factory and "From My Cold Dead Hands" in 2012/2013 by Pivotal/Trooper Entertainment/Abyss Rec.
You can buy "Deus Deceptor" here: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com/adv ... s=nonexist
And here are links for buying "From My Cold Dead Hands":
http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Nonexist ... ds_5432119
http://cdon.eu/music/nonexist/from_my_c ... s-23509719
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/nonexist

5. Tell us about some great shows Nonexist or any other bands you have performed with over the years?

We only just recenly gathered a full live-line-up so we've only made one gig so far- at the Scorched Tundra Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was great fun so we're dying to play more live.

6. Do you have any amusing stories from when you recorded your albums or when you were on the road?

I think I'll have to get back to you about this when we've played more gigs, hehe. Not much to tell yet!

7. Name some of the bands that have influenced your playing style and then name some of the bands that people think influenced you but didn't?

Some of the bands that have influenced us are Slayer, Morbid Angel, Merciless, Metallica, Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Exhorder, Edge of Sanity, At the Gates, Soilwork, Terrorizer, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Pantera, Massacre, Megadeth, Dan Swanö, Dissection, Opeth, Dismember, Sisters of Mercy, Black Sabbath, Fields of the Nephilim, Mercyful Fate.
Bands people think influenced us but haven't? Hmm, dunno... I think most references in reviews have been pretty accurate actually.

8. What are some of your all time favorite albums?

The Cure - "Disintegration", Captain Beyond - "S/T", The Doors - "S/T", Metallica - "Master of Puppets", Atheist - "Unquestionable Presence", Depeche Mode - "Violator", Muse - "HAARP", Marillion - "Clutching at Straws", Yes - "Close to the Edge", Merciless - "Unbound", Megadeth - "Rust in Peace", Pantera - "Vulgar Display of Power" and a few hundred more...

9. Name some of the all time worst or overated Metal albums in your opinion?

Interesting! I like these type of questions. Let's see... I'd say the first Ghost-album. Total crap. I really like old-school hardrock/heavymetal but to me Ghost are just weak and lame. Especially the singer. Volbeat also sucks big time. Venom - "Welcome to Hell" and "Black Metal".
Don't know if you count bands like Def Leppard and Kiss and such? I think Def Leppard - "Hysteria" is painfully bad. It's like cotton candy in music-form.
The list could go on and on but lastly I'd like to mention Mayhem - "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas" and anything by Helloween and Hammerfall.

10. Let everyone know what the band has planned for the future.

We are currently writing our third album and most of the songs are done, except for the lyrics. We will start recording sometime this winter. We also have some local shows coming up. Gigs abroad we have to see about. We'd love to get out there though!
There are Nonexist-songs out for downloading to Rock Band via Rhythm Authors, check it here:
http://www.rhythmauthors.com Search for Nonexist at "Songs".
Hopefully we will make more songs available for Rock Band soon!
Thanks for you support and interest! Cheers!

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://heavymetal.about.com

Image

By Todd Lyons

Musicians, like regular folks, have longings for the good old days, as Tiger Mathisen must have when he revisited his by reviving Fester and then releasing A Celebration Of Death. He should have the urge more often, as the quality of Fester and A Celebration Of Death is supreme, with a thick coat of 1993 slathered all over it. There's even a cassette version! Nonetheless, it’s a tremendous death metal album for 2012.
Fester made Winter Of Sin in 1992 and the fine Silence in 1994. A scant 17 years later, Fester returns with their best effort yet. Tiger Mathisen and Thomas Simonsen of the original Fester (the bass player, Jorgen Skølden, overdosed in 2000), Jon Bakker, and a session drummer, Jotho, a renowned jazz drummer, expertly rip up the tracks. Nothing says death metal like jazz, especially when Jotho predominately plays standard 4/4 with only smidgens of stylizations and nary a blast-beat.
Enrobed in a dim-fi period piece mix, the musicianship is superlative and transforms the seemingly intentional blur into "atmosphere." Opening with the melodic yet ominous "Rites of Ceres," the track swells into a sheeting rainstorm of clamped phrygian guitars brutalizing their G-strings.
Solos, like black umbrellas bent against the wind, appear in the funereal procession of dragging beats and elongated vocal phrasing, which for death metal is sung in an upper-castrati range. They work well, providing contrast to the usual buzz-saw grunting. "Rites of Ceres" boasts unusually good lyrics, lending a tint of paganistic doom to the blackened festivities.
Fester plies this quilting texture and tortured tonality throughout A Celebration Of Death. Each track builds from the previous one by elevating intensity and expanding solos and guitar beds. The riffs pound Like chromatic sieges and never sound recycled from old Kreator or At the Gates albums.
"Rites of Ceres", "The Black Tower" and "A Face for a Funeral" are outstanding, almost sludgy tracks. The two tracks worthy of the illegal-to-tear-off tag of Classic are "I'll Hunt You Down" and "Metalized". The vocals in “Metalized” are actually pitched down to modern death metal mumblyness.
The forefinger-pinching riff in the following "Jeg Spytter Pa Deg" (a Norwegian phrase meaning something like “top of the mornin' to ya”) is practically infectious. The song's drive motors along until it crashes into an ending of messy guitar and jazz spilled all over the drumh eads. Overlooking a few gaffes, an album with 6 great tracks is worth the PayPal anytime.
Before the usual plea to purchase a great album worthy of a special death metal collection, be forewarned that there are several silly Pink Floyd soundscapes of sword and machine gun mayhem, and for whatever reason, a drum-machine remix of “Rites of Ceres” tacked on the end. The extra-added value is a nice thought, but the track dilutes that warm fuzzy glow of miserable death.

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By Paul Maddison

This album, all 19 tracks is part live album with four new studio tracks, and as another bonus, a remastered version of the bands ‘Deserts of Desolation’ EP. Diabolical from Sweden, are one of those bands that have sat under the radar for years, when lesser bands have rose up and taken the limelight. Feeding your music frenzy with rabid death/thrash these gents are both technical wizards and forthright in their annihilation of the live stage. Musically, the sound is perfect, perhaps too perfect, but what you can hear is the crystal clear live musicianship, hardly ever dropping any notes. Crushing classics like ‘Children of the Mushroom Cloud’ from their second full length ‘A Thousand Deaths’. Other earlier material standing out is ‘Ashes II’, this is rather good, and it has to be because I actually thought ‘Synergy’ was a good release, unlike popular opinion! The newer tracks, namely the first four, are that bit slower, but very powerful with it. There is an almost doomy desolation in the mix, but the vocals well and truly make their mark. The album title roughly translates to the “Art of Life”, I guess that is why the foetus is featured!
The only negative I would comment on is that this appears to be a live album from different shows, there is no flow into subsequent tracks, the mix is a definite stop gap between songs, and this kills the atmosphere you would hope to gain from a live album as is the main reason for my rating. This quirk aside, ‘Ars Vitae’ is a release that showcases Diabolical’s talented discography, and also manages to bring you up to date with the bands current ideas.

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by http://www.norsksvartmetall.com

Image

By norsk svart metall

The second album from this orthodox Black Metal band who take their cue from the likes of Gorgoroth and early Dødheimsgard. Outside Norway the band name may seem like something you put on your head, but ’hat’ is Norwegian for ‘hatred, and this is a simmering rage of fast, orthodox Black Metal with bursts of industrial frigidity. This is an album you need to listen to in its entirety as a few songs here and there may deprive you of this bands quite mesmerizing musical arrangements. There is a twist in every track, a brooding section, a ghostly industrial muse, a haunting flirtation, a glacial contemplation. All these clever interludes in the abrasive chaos of the furious music's main essence transform what could have been a mundane experience into a through provoking, enjoyable one.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

There seems to be no shortage of younger bands out there infusing the vintage realms of speed, thrash and heavy metal with a more aggressive, 'current' black metal edge in the vocals and atmosphere. Thankfully, they tend to draw upon such a wide palette of influences that very few feel quite the same. For example, Midnight feels little like Kvelertak; Speedwolf little like Gravehill, and yet they all seem bound for a similar audience. Enter Indiana's Maax, who wear all this 'black & roll' on their sleeves, with logo and album artwork that would literally make for an eye catching tattoo, and offering a blend of similar aesthetics to those you'd find in the aforementioned acts. I wasn't quite so taken with the previous release I had heard (their Six Pack Witchcraft EP last year), but persistence has clearly paid off.

I might not be singing or remembering Unholy Rock & Roll a few months hence, but at least it is fun while it lasts, and there are at least 2-3 genuinely good tunes that make up for any of the filler. As hinted, there are a wide array of influences on the album, from the filthier side of the NWOBHM spectrum (Venom and Motörhead) to the formative Teutonic black/thrash of Sodom, Kreator and Destruction; with a healthy helping of Kill 'Em All or Celtic Frost. This manifests in a good deal of variation between individual songs, so you'll have something like "Fight With Fire" which feels like a mix of old Metallica and Kreator's "Riot of Violence"; or "Do What Thou Wilt" which incorporates a smudge of straight old Judas Priest trad metal with the blacker, barking vocals; or the band's namesake "Maax" which is pretty much barroom punk metal bred for broken glass and morning after regrets. Curiously enough, my favorite track here was "Overthrone", which is a mix of driving, tremolo black metal with these ominous, churning death metal breaks.

The point is: with Maax, you've got options. Perhaps none of the constituent sounds going into this record are so pronounced or volatile as you'd find them in other places, but they tend to handle everything well enough in this mixed punchbowl of punishment. Almost as if someone hurled a bunch of vintage metal tees and denim jackets into a cauldron, added a whole lotta whiskey and absinthe and then stirred the shit out of it and handed you the ladle. I enjoyed the deep, dark fuzz of the guitar tone and the bruised bluntness of the vocals, and in general the riffs hang with the ear, even if they don't really fashion into the most striking of patterns. But it's not as if the band set out to write Powerslave or Det Som Engang Var. This isn't 'deep'. No, this is meant to kick in the ribs of the opposition, spit or urinate on its victims and then hit the road in a high speed motorcycle escape from the local authorities. To that extent, there's nothing wrong with it. Unholy Rock & Roll, just as was advertised.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.alonemusic.it

Image

By ZEITGEIST

The Swedish old school reopens!
Six years after their formation, Entrench published under ABYSS RECORDS their first full-length from the prophetic title "Inevitable Decay". Already the first track "As Dawn Breaks" one senses the direction taken by the band, with a choice of style that recalls the early Kreator: primordial sounds that catapult us to the dawn of Thrash.
The third track "Portrait Of A Phobia" is subtly inspired flashes to "Golem" of the Protector, flagship of the group stage 80 Thrash / Death. "Into Oblivion" with its frenetic riffing stopped and the "Blind Illusion" give us the same cd in different eras, where sound more modern blend the Old School. "Crossing The River", entirely instrumental approaches to the blast megadethiane tight stairs with a good result. As we closed, "Where Only Ruins Remains" with a slow riffing and powerful at first, culminating with a perfectly executed solos.
The ability of these kids is truly astounding Swedes from composition to execution, but little originality of the themes (life, death and war) and the repetitive structure of the tracks can penalize them in the long run.
"Inevitable Decay" is still a more than full-length as well in only 8 pieces retraces the history of Thrash Metal.

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) "Nihil" CD EP review by Occult Black Metal Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Noctis Imperium are a band from Caracas, Venezuela that plays black metal with a strong death metal edge and this is a review of their 2010album "Nihil" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from being midpaced to fast with alot of brutal blast beats while the bass playing has a very powerful sound of it own with alot of fast and dark riffs, as for the keyboards they are rarely used but when utilized they are only there to enhance atmosphere..

Rhythm guitars combine the heaviest and fastest elements of black and death metal together while staying on the more dark side, while the lead guitars are very melodic and contain alot of early 90's satanic death metal influences.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep death metal growls, while the lyrics cover some Thelemic occultism, darkness, war, and imperailism, as for the production it has a very professional sound and you can hear all of the instruments that are present on this album.

In my opinion Noctis Imperium are good for what they do with the way they mix modern black metal with some death metal influences, and I can see this band getting mixed reviews in the underground since they are too primal for the mainstream black metal audience but probably would not be considered true by some of the more underground black metal audience, but other than that this is still a good metal album that would appeal to fans of Dark Funeral, Belphegor and other bands similar.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bring Me Sacrifice" and "Unus In Nihil". RECOMMENDED.

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by Aristocrazia Webzine

Image

By Mourning

Sincere is the moniker chosen for the project, which involves among other Tiger Fester of Algol and the former Thomas Andresen, have signed a deal with the Abyss Records and released debut album "Cursed And Proud" in September 2011.
The product is in line with the style I brought forward by the artists involved, a death very focused on the heels of the old school with mid-tempo that are interspersed with blasts, phrasing the limit with a propensity to thrash and black punctuated by icy melodies far time to remember that hidden in some ways the Greeks Rotting Christ and Dissection in part of this mixture in the past that were the real masters.
The platter is one that leaves little doubt it's real, made with good care, but obviously genuine and deliberately in the sound, the bass cut out a clear dimension pleasant to the ear, the compositions flow with no frills except for some inclusion of synth that enhances the appearance of atmospheric pollution, as if the early nineties for these musicians had never passed, we present them by living intensely and with pleasing results.
The material recovered, in part (tracks 1-4) from the demo "Tall And Proud" which was given new life, in part by the "Live In The Essence" (tracks 5-8) to which was added the same name Song of Norway's entry wrestler Byron Lawless, desires and passion is anchored to the period when the Scandinavian scene churning out works imbued with dark-hued metal.
Andresen's voice with his scratching lends itself to providing a further basis for the loading blackeggiante mostly death oriented and songs like "Tall And Proud", "Blinded" (short but guessed the stage singing clean), "Die Like Jesus Christ "and the fun bonus track" Byron Lawless "stand out in a platter level, yes, but no missteps.
After returning to activities of historians Fester see them side by side by Sincere implies that the circle of young men who turned around now that reality has not lost his desire to play and give their music, as a first step "Cursed And Proud" is convincing and recommended for those who (like me) is a nostalgic not get enough of listening to a certain type of sound, however, give the rest a chance to work on hold to give us official confirmation that it is not just a side project but a band in effect handing over a successor who Bissi positive feelings thus far received.

NONEXIST (Sweden) Interview / Q&A by http://www.ladyobscure.com

Image

By Nem Nol

Bio: Nonexist was formed in 2000 when Johan Reinholdz presented some death/thrashmetal demo-tracks for Bengt ”Wez” Wenedikter of Swedish WAR-music (Darkane, Defleshed, Naglfar etc). Reinholdz’ other band Andromeda had recently signed a deal with WAR and now it was time for Nonexist to sign the papers. Ex-Arch Enemy/Furbowl/Carnage vocalist Johan Liiva was recruited along with Dark Funeral/Defleshed-drummer Matte Modin.

With no formal rehearsing under their belts the guys entered Abyss Studios in November 2001 and cut the tracks for the debutalbum Deus Deceptor which was put out on the market in May 2002.

Following the release of the album Nonexist became nonexistent as the members went their separate ways – Reinholdz with Andromeda, Liiva with Hearse and Modin with Dark Funeral and Raised Fist among others. Reinholdz continued to write songs during the years to come, most of which were discarded though.

However, in 2009 a collection of Nonexist-songs that were up to snuff emerged, the title From My Cold Dead Hands came about and Reinholdz started focusing on getting a sophomore album finished. In 2011 Liiva joined the band again and a contract was signed with American label Pivotal Rockorings for a digital release. 2012 was spent cutting the album at Multipass Studios with Reinholdz producing and mixing. From My Cold Dead Hands was finished in September and released in November.

Nonexist made their first gig ever at the Scorched Tundra Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden in December 2012.

Early 2013 the band signed with American Abyss Records for a physical release of the album. The Abyss Records-edition of From My Cold Dead Hands features three bonus tracks: cover-versions of Coroner’s Masked Jackal, Merciless’ Realm of the Dark and Eucharist’s Greeting Immortality.

It started back in 2000. I had come in contact with Swedish label WAR-music and the boss Wez Wenedikter. We had signed a contract for my other band Andromeda and Wez also got interested in the demos I made in the death/thrash-vein. So he offered me a deal for this project which carried a few different names like Legacy and Legacy of Pain and a couple more before we settled for Nonexist, which was more original.

Johan Liiva was just then out of Arch Enemy, he also played in Carnage and Furbowl before that by the way, and Wez knew Liiva since the time Arch Enemy were signed to his previous label Wrong Again Records. So Wez invited Liiva to join Nonexist and then we got Matte Modin, then in Defleshed and Dark Funeral to do the drums. He now plays in Raised Fist.

Without any rehearsals we entered Abyss Studios up north in Sweden in November 2001 and cut “Deus Deceptor” in ten days or so. The album came out in 2002, we did some press and then the band fell apart but was resurrected in 2010 and now we have a live-line up and hungry for making more albums!

Genre: We want to play metal that is intense, brutal and fast, but also has hooks and melodies and atmosphere, so this style then comes naturally to us!

Evolution of the initial musical and thematic elements: It usually starts with the music. I come up with a couple of riffs that seems to fit together and then I connect them in a way that makes sense. So then I have the spine of the song which then can be expanded. Maybe add a couple of parts or do variations of the riffs that are already in place. Writing the drums is a very important part of this process for me. The drums make the riffs come alive and bloom out in their full potential. And sometimes I have a riff come back but with a different drum-beat – which can change everything.

The lyrics are then written to fit the music. Sometimes I have the title before I even do the music and then the theme for lyrics may be in the back of my head. Other times I have lyrics written previously that suddenly fit a new piece of music I’ve come up with.

Ideas about the album: We’re very happy! But of course there are things to improve, like the production. It was the first album I ever produced all by myself, so I’m learning as I go along. But basically all of the material we’re very satisfied with. We’ll continue in this vein on the next but also incorporate different stuff to keep it interesting and evolving.

Reception: Mixed! Hehe! Some really like it and some think it’s too varied and that the album isn’t cohesive enough. Which I think is absurd considering that the whole album is pure brutal, more or less. I mean I like all kinds of music so to me these people are very narrow-minded and don’t get that you need some variation and dynamics on an album. That makes the brutality stand out more.

Preference; live or studio: Haven’t really been on the road with this band yet so I don’t know! But I guess the road would be more fun. I love writing music and that whole process but playing live and getting feedback from the fans is the best thing for me as a musician. It’s extremely rewarding.

Next step; live or studio: A new album is being written and actually most of the songs are ready, musically anyway. We are lagging behind with the lyrics. We have some local shows coming up and we’ll see if we’ll get abroad soon or not. We are building the band up from scratch again almost so it’s tough right now. Especially considering how the music-scene works these days. But sure, we want to play live a lot, no doubt.

Future plans: A new album every other year, I think that’s realistic. Also keep the music evolving and don’t stagnate. Hopefully festival-gigs and tours! We want to get out there and thrash to the max!

Lyrics, themes and concepts: The lyrics deal with dark subjects overall. They have to fit the mood of the music of course so there’s a lot of death, hate, love, betrayal, pain, psychological issues. These lyrics are quite personal. Then we also have lyrics that are more extrovert so to speak – they deal more with observations about the world around us – like “Fire at Will” or “Collective Coma” for example. The lyrics often pop up by themselves but pretty often I work from a title, which sets the topic and mood.

Regarding how they influence the writing I refer back to the previous question about the writing process!

Composers: I wrote more or less “From My Cold Dead Hands” on my own. On the third album Liiva will write more lyrics and also music for one song.

Inspirations: Slayer, Morbid Angel, Merciless, Metallica, Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Terrorizer, Exhorder, Edge of Sanity, At the Gates, Pantera, Megadeth, Dan Swanö, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Opeth, Dismember, Sisters of Mercy, Black Sabbath, Fields of the Nephilim, Mercyful Fate.

Preference; cater to the audience or music for its own sake: Music for its own sake. The band is really underground, hasn’t been active for quite some time so we have nothing to lose really, haha! We just throw out the music there and see what happens. I don’t think calculating too much about the style of the music is really beneficial actually. I think the people who listen can tell if the music comes from the musicians hearts or is more a cynical move to become popular.

Greatest Accomplishment: Both the quantity and quality of the albums I’ve made or made in collaboration with my band mates.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.musiq.no

Image

By Jørgen Garmann

Askim quartet parties released back in 1992 their debut album "Winter of Sin" on No Fashion Records, and for a debut it was! Parties showed here with his doom death metal sandwiches harsh solos and a high-pitch vocals, as heard time, the Norwegian death metal from the early 90's has been far too little cred in retrospect. Abyss Records are now choosing and render their debut and its sequel, the band's latest release, "Silence" . Both remastered and remixed with a super clear sound . The parties, and several others of course had, it was explosive, but controlled run going coupled with a not excessively hyper-blast beat and said evil vocals. pace is now what defines "classic" death metal and yes, the solos being served is carefully conceived and executed with an immersion one seldom hears of the death metal from this period. The simple but effective riffs resulting in melodies can in a couple of songs to be somewhat repetitive, but the thing is that they are not perceived that way. It all felt rather like Norwegian death metal of the highest quality and this album can not be called anything other than a classic and milestone ekstremmetalls in Norwegian history.

ANGIST (Iceland) Interview by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

ICELAND. The small island in the middle of the sea resting on the remains of volcanoes. That place can’t possible produce great metal bands, can they? Enter ANGIST. Anders Ekdahl ©2013

I can’t help being impressed by the number of bands that come out of Iceland, a country with a population the size of Malmö, Sweden. But are there really a music scene, let alone a metal scene to speak of?

-Yes definitely, even though the scene is maybe not very big, it’s still very dedicated and close knit.

There are always new bands popping up and we have so many talented people over here. We have a lot of really good bands over here. When you want to record are you forced to go abroad or are there local studios that you can use?

-There are a lot of good studios here and many people are also recording in their own houses or garages. But the problem we are facing is that even we have good producers for pop/indie/alt music, there are not many that truly “get” metal so some people go abroad or import their own producer. For our upcoming record we are for example getting the Swedish producer Fredrik Rheindal, who recorded the last two Sólstafir album.

Iceland is pretty isolated in the North Sea, half way to the North Pole. How isolated do you feel? And has this isolation helped shape your sound?

-Some days you feel the isolation more than others. It’s definitely harder for touring but if there’s a will there’s a way.
But the winters here are dark and endless so it’s maybe nothing better for us to do than to make music. The music scene here, whether it’s metal or something else, is very active, so many bands, rehearsal spaces and gigs. It’s actually pretty great for such a small country.

What is it really that has been the most significant factor in shaping your sound?

-First and foremost the dynamic in the band, between the band members and our influences. We are also not set in any form, we try everything until we are satisfied and we are always improving and always follow our instincts when it comes to writing music.

Is there a specific Icelandic sound to speak of? The pop/rock acts that have come from Iceland like Sugarcubes, Mùm or Sigur Ros doesn’t sound quite like anybody else.

-Some people say that they can hear “the Icelandic metal sound” but there are so many different metal bands here that we find it hard to hear a specific sound. But maybe it’s right, maybe we are just used to it and therefore a part of it!

The whole Scandinavian mythology seems to have its origin on Iceland. How much does the common history we share play a part in the concept of ANGIST?

-We are of course very much aware of it and we love the stories but it’s not connected to Angist’s music.
The lyrical conception is more what’s happening now, how people are behaving, or misbehaving, treating each other, how spoiled and greedy people are and can lack total empathy.

Can I ask about the band name? What is the general idea of it?

-Angist means torment or anguish. It sounds very powerful in Icelandic and we thought it was the perfect word to describe our music and lyrics.

When you have a record to promote how much attention do you get locally? Do they pick up the buzz once it has happened elsewhere?

-Well, we have only released an EP and that was late 2011. In 2012 it started to get more attention internationally and we feel that interest has been getting stronger and now we are feeling anticipation for our new album so we are really excited for that.
But locally it’s always much easier to promote your albums even though there are only few indie shops that will sell them but the metal scene knows that if you come to shows, you can buy people’s albums. Or even just go to people’s houses, grab a coffee and an album haha, it’s a small country!

What would you consider a success?

-To us, success is having fun with our music and we have already reached much further with our music than we even thought about in the beginning.
We really love playing music together and we are having so much fun, so combine that with releasing albums and touring, we are one happy bunch!

What would you like the future to hold for you?

-Well at the moment we are preparing to record our first full length album so hopefully it will be well received and we can do more tours. Playing live and connecting with new people is what we truly love. We are going on a tour (Ferðin til Heljar) in Iceland and Faeroe Islands this summer so that’s something we are very much looking forward to.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by Blackened Horde Zine

Image

By Kris

One of the many great aspects of reviewing music is often you get to hear how a band grows and improves. After the 2011 full-length album The System Of Nature by Swedish band The Gardnerz, I felt they didn’t have much to improve upon. Their album was a dynamic masterpiece of doom infused death metal that was a real pleasure to experience. The Gardnerz wasted no time getting to work and expanding on their already impeccable sound. The result is their 2012 EP titled It All Fades. This EP is every bit the equal of The System Of Nature in quality and creative songwriting. But this time around The Gardnerz show us that they are not content to simply copy the same formula that made The System of nature a success. They instead decide to expand on their sound and they have created one hell of an incredible EP. This time around they add melodic elements to the already solid musical blend. This combination of doom melodic death metal gives us an EP that is extreme at points but can also slow things down and deliver wispy somber moments of dread that pull you in as a listener. This EP wants to play you by giving you some anger and then swinging you into sadness, and it pulls this off immaculately. All of the brilliant musical performances featured are on The System of Nature are back and also expanded upon. Singer Niclas Ankarbranth still has his deep, dominating death metal voice but this time putts in some great bellowing and some great clean singing too. He is a phenomenal death metal singer that shows he is improving on his already near perfect voice and expanding on what he does best in artistic ways. Not to be out done, guitarist Wilhelm Lindh also expands on his playing keeping his blisteringly brutal death metal riffs but now at times can move to hauntingly beautiful delicate leads and arpeggios. He and bassist Francisco Martin once again weave a perfect tapestry together. This EP has the guts to take on a black metal classic and completely rework it. Transilvanian Hunger by the one and only Darkthrone has been covered here in an intensely fascinating way. They strip out the extreme metal and have a woman beautifully sing the song over soft melodies played gracefully on guitar. This works extremely well as a cover and as a creative spin on a black metal classic. This is one fantastic band and this is one fantastic EP. Constantly imaginative and evolving proving that even though it all fades, The Gardnerz continue to shine.

BANE (Serbia) "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" DIGI CD review by Rockerilla Magazine

Image

By Mystery Flame

Serbia will add your name to the list of nations of the 'east, such as Poland, Ukraine and Flomania, which produce extreme metal club quality of higher education, these groups often know how to customize their own style Please use melodies or instruments of their traditional lands. In the case of Bane's what you do not check their excellent sound directly back to Sweden of Dark Funeral, Dissection and Old Man's Child, Blackened Death drenched in melody and great intensity, Quincke will not be a novelty, but because this type of style, appealing not often hear, especially so well produced and performed, I would recommend cold.

Rating: 8/10

Review was originally written in Italian and has been translated using Google Translate, Original review in Italian can be seen below.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by Metal Obs Magazine

Image

By Yath

Nobody saw it coming that little disc that looks like nothing. Yet Inevitable Decay, works from the first power-trio Entrench is a carnage. 40 short minutes of ecstasy Thrash Metal front, fast, and very hysterical, but then very well composed. Small rifss vicious, complex structures and compounds that develop intelligent approach a little combo of Thrash Progressive training. Only a little, because the group nevertheless remains focused on its primary energy and groove.

Rating: 4/5

This review was originally written in French and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in French is listed below.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.extreminal.com

Image

By Battlepig

The Swedes SEPTEKH are no novices. Since already 2008 they honour the sympathetic Metal people. In April 2013 their by now third EP which is called “Apollonian Eyes“ came out via Abyss Records.
The guys play Death Metal with a proper portion of dirty Thrash Metal. Straight, without detours, into the listeners' face. Energetic riffs which may once make leeway into the Thrash Metal area mingle with powerful drumming in the high speed area. This mixture gives the production hardness and brutality. Forceful bass lines as well as the distinctive shouting of vocalist Nils Meseke still reinforce and manifest the raw and native general impression of “Apollonian Eyes“. The all in all four songs get across fresh and unconsumed and doesn't let miss the necessary hardness at any time.Very dedicated recorded I can only recommend SEPTEKH to each Death Metal and Thrash Metal fan! It's worth it!!!!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.mondometalwebzine.com

Image

By Saetta Gatto

Eleven fucking years. So is the time taken by the Swedes Dead Awaken to achieve their first full-length. Said an old proverb: "time gives advice." And it must have received several tips to be able to create a sound so perfect, pure death metal style. This is perhaps one of those cases where it would be enough to observe the cover to have some idea of what lies ahead. A tank, soldiers, rubble. A war. The war in the sound. The CD opens with " Carnivore ", where an aggressive sound and a masterful voice growl are the masters. " Deutsches Afrika Corpse "is perhaps the song with the sound faster than all of them. " Rocket Symphony "begins with bass and then have a sudden change of speed (typical of the genre). The guitar riffs are violent and concise. Just as in a battle: first the gun that fires and then the atomic bomb that destroys. In " Venom of the Population "we find an opening melodic turns slowly slip back into the vortex until death. All embellished with dramatic bass lines that accompany the voice on the chorus. Guitars fast and scratching bring this piece to get the podium for grandeur. The lyrics leave little to the imagination. Death, destruction, demons, divine, all written in a very fluid and smooth. The use of the double bass, the bass punchy, rhythmic guitars that can change depending on the need, are the elements that characterize the entire work. A cd to listen to, share and spread. If you love the genre you absolutely can not ignore it.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by Dave's Underground Laboratory

Image

By Dave Schalek

Toss Motörhead, Venom, and even early (very early) Motley Crüe into a blender along with an unabashed fondness for rollicking, sloppy blackened thrash and you have Unholy Rock N’ Roll, the second full-length album from Indianapolis’ Mäax. Obviously, a release such as this is going to appeal to the old timers such as myself, but the band’s approach is also just one of infectious fun and an enthusiasm for all things metal.
The riffs are dirty and are obviously descended from pure, old school rock n’ roll, the tempo is generally a gallop, and the vocals are snarled and nasty. Add a slightly muddy production and Unholy Rock N’ Roll becomes an obvious niche release for a particular demographic. That’s just fine as Unholy Rock N’ Roll is a lot of fun, if somewhat forgettable due to average songwriting and musicianship.
But, forging new territory in songwriting and technical expertise is not the point, and Unholy Rock N’ Roll succeeds in its mission to find that demographic niche.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.arisingrealm.at

Image

By Kai Scheibe

Again, the time machine is lost - it goes back to the spring of 1992. A few Norwegian boys have recorded nine tracks, the whole "Winter of sin", and still a rather new label called No Fashion Records saw that this came on the market. Funny, more than an insider tip was never proof. But when you look at the NFR after following releases, the Pavlov effect immediately ensures massive salivation: Marduk, Dissection, Unanimated, Katatonia, Merciless, Lord Belial, Dark Funeral, Decameron, Mörk Gryning, Allegiance ... the Scandinavian experts need first a few drops of heart. Almost 20 years later, No Fashion is indeed long gone, but other people remember the early releases: Abyss Records have "winter of sin" wrapped in a digipak, a live track as a bonus packed so tight with it and give again a stage. They are certainly not a mainstream food, but also no 08/15-Skandinavien-Stangenware. Fixed spit slow Black Metal is not free of built-in melodies or leads sent from acting somehow odd and can be called more bulky than catchy, it. Great cinema is the nagging-drooling-howling singers, is certainly the already tormented by a few articulate sounds the concentrated attention. Reminds me a bit at the corrupted guy who at Bluuurgh (also have 1992 a wonderfully sick Death Metal album "In My Embrace" was published) was on the mic. "Winter of sin" is eating slowly and steadily through the ear turns, but it also tense after some playing time before, given the less accessible arrangements and the nerve-tiring vocals. Overall, however, an interesting album that deserves a hearing test.

Rating: 7.0/10.0

FESTER (Norway) "Silence" DIGI CD review by http://southerndarkness.net

Image

By Southern Darkness

Abyss Records re released this past April 7 a classic one of the legendary band Death / Black Metal Norwegian, which emerged in the years when Emperor Mayhem and others were planting base of what would be so controversial Norwegian black metal scene This edition re Fester and his first work "Silence" comes in its original form as it came out in 1993, in those days the label was responsible for editing Lethal Records.
What if commissioned to redesign Abyss Records was the artwork, the songs have some touch of mastering, and brings each of the topics a few lines of the band members where they explain in detail its meaning when composing, and bonus track of a live track recorded in 1991.
The album is a piece of worship without a doubt, full of cold atmospheres, depression, anger, and very good riffs, completing a work that has everything a good album of old school Death / Black Metal has to have strongly recommended for which no conscience Fester, one of the legendary Norwegian band of the late 80's.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Adrian

The gardnerz seems to be a South American band actually, two of is members being from Chile, one from Mexico and only one from Sweden, but I guess they have relocated to Sweden. The Mexican guy namely Wilhelm Lindh was (is?) also a member of the Death Metal legends Toxodeth, everyone should know who Toxodeth is. "The System of Nature" is The Gardnerz' debut album, a 12 tracks effort lasting for exactly an hour, a melodic, heavy and dark Doom Death Metal a la' '90's that honestly made me think of early Amorphis, and that's because of the "oriental" approach on guitar leads. The guitar riffs unfortunately are getting too repetitive at times and that gets monotonous, and if you add the mono-tone raspy vocals of Niclas (good vocals, but not varied enough) this drags down the release, but still all in all I have enjoyed it, especially the guitar leads and bass lines. Recommended to old Amorphis followers. The Progressive Death Metal elements that are thrown in here and there only show that these guys have a lot more potential than they show on this release.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by http://www.mylastchapter.net

Image

By Phuling

Upon a glance of the cover I’d have expected this to be either pure rock and roll or a crustcore album. But Six pack witchcraft is none of the above, what Maax (or Mäax if you wish) does here is completely bastardize the lovechild of Venom and Motörhead, and they do so in the ugliest way possible.

A few seconds into the opening track Die by the ax’ I’m almost overwhelmed by the insanely burly sound of the guitars and bass, and it really takes me a while to come to terms with the production. It sounds as to have been recorded in the rehearsal room, but for some reason onto a cell phone. The drum sound is relatively clear, the vocals are minorly reverbed (just like they should be) and comes across in a decent manner. So do the guitar leads, but the rhythm guitar and bass presents one of the burliest and ugliest offering I’ve heard to date. But it’s still ugly in a good way, ‘cause this lot of hairy, denim-wearing men is all about bringing back the golden days of pure rocking metal.

The influences from the previously mentioned Venom and Motörhead are obvious, and I suppose there’s a hint of a blackened punkiness of later Darkthrone in there as well, just as a buttload of heavy metal shines through. It all comes together in a neat knapsack of thrash, rock and roll, punk, black metal and a humongous buttload of attitude. It’s difficult to withstand the energetic, testosterone-ridden journey Maax takes you on. Every track is filled to the rim with simple and wickedly effective riffing. The powerful vocals sound just as harsh and evil as most metal vocalists wants to sound like, but fail terribly at achieving. It’s like being given a brief look into the mischievous, blasphemous, grave robbing, beer drinking, porn watching and bike riding metalhead heaven.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by Extremonia Zine

Image

By Carlos Rendo

Fester is a classic and pioneering band in the Norwegian scene charged scatter raw sounds and riffs worthy of the best death / doom / black metal fury and fall of the old school. "Winter of Sin" is his first album originally released in 1992 and now re-edited by Abyss Records in 2010 with different art. remastered and with bonus live track. While the music Fester did not seem too elaborate, draws attention as a disc is very dark without losing strength and aggressiveness in its content. To give an idea or to better define this band, it makes things Celtic Frost and Hellhammer, but at no time is lost originality Fester. Perhaps it is a good time to discover gems beens or well guarded in the depths of the early 90's.

This review was originally written in Spanish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in Spanish is below.
