I am looking for a list of concepts albums (heavy metal) that are based on literature.

PS: Searches got me to only discussions on concept albums in general, so I created this thread only for literature/books/novels based albums.

Grave Digger's Rheingold, if I'm not mistaken. It did immediately come to mind.

Manticora - Hyperion is based on the novel of the same name. They actually have a blurb in the liner notes encouraging their fans to go out and read the book.

Kamelot - Epica and The Black Halo, based on Goethe's Faust

Catacombs - In the Depths of R'lyeh, based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos

The whole slew of Tolkien-based stuff -- Blind Guardian, Summoning, blah blah.

Angra's Aqua is based off of The Tempest. Very cool, evocative album too...a masterwork and probably their best. Go check it out.

Amazing album, but it should be noted that only about half of it actually concerns Dracula, including two instrumentals.

Several bands composed albums about a 2000+ year old series of dystopian dark fantasy also known as The Bible. Orphaned Land's Mabool is one.

The upcoming The Ruins Of Beverast seems to be themed around the infamous Malleus Maleficarum.

Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding and Ulver's Marriage of Heave and Hell are based to great extent on the works of William Blake.

Symphony X - Paradise Lost: Based on the eponymous epic poem of the same name by John Milton. The poem is also the basis for a large portion of Damnation and a Day by Cradle of Filth.
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth: Based on Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

Those are the initial albums that come to mind. If I think of more later I'll put them here.

And most are poorly done sketches!

I love Maiden as much as the next maniac but come on! Sans Rime of The Ancient Mariner and maybe To Tame A Land, none of the so called adaptations is deeply probing.

And to the one who mentioned Helstar's "Nosferatu", isn't that based more on the movie than on the book? What with the dialogue intros and all.

Manilla Road!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Mystification" draws a lot from Poe lyrically and although it is not a concept record it does have the themes of horror and mysticism binding all the songs together.

"Gates of Fire" is three stories in all;
1-3: "The Frost Giant's Daughter" - inspired by the story of the same name written by Robert E. Howard.
4-6: "Out of the Ashes" - inspired by Virgil's "The Aeneid".
7-9: "Gates of Fire" - inspired by the heroic stand of King Leonides and his Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae.

Earth's "HEX; or Printing in the Infernal Method" is based on Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, the best book ever written. Haven't heard the album because drone/doom isn't exactly to my taste.

EDIT: Because I'm an idiot.

Whoa, really? Most creepy, atmospheric and metaphysically weird book...love it. Will have to check out this band/album because of that.

The progressive death metal band Forgotten Silence's album Thots is based upon Isabel Allende's novel House of Spirits. Both are worth checking out. THe Forgotten Silence stuff is pretty weird with influences all over the place but I much prefer it to something like Maudlin of the Well for the most part.

I remember when I started a topic like this years ago. It wasn't about concept albums but rather metal based upon literature in general, with a request to steer away from Tolkienish stuff (because that's what all these bands seem to want to do, and at this point, sorry to say, who cares anymore?)...and I do know some concept albums were brought up. Might want to look through the forum for that thread.

Oh, and I don't think "2112" is based on The Fountainhead, although it could be aslight inspiration. Anthem, maybe; I haven't read that one but Rush already made a short song about it on Fly by Night.

I'm pretty Sure Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea is based off of Moby Dick

This. 2112 isn't really based on Anthem either, but the similarities are clearly there. The Fountainhead, I think, is a miss.

Fuck, still have to read that. Cormac McCarthy really is brilliant.

Not a full on concept album, but Cobalt's Gin is largely inspired by the work of Ernest Hemmingway and Hunter S. Thompson.
