Don't sure if this has been done before (yadda yadda...). Couldn't find anything by search.

It's propably pretty common to have bad air between people you live close to, be it misunderstandings or people just being different by nature or having different lifestyles from each other. Unless you live in a periphery or such, that is bound to happen sometimes.

I guess I have to blame myself from moving an area with so bad reputation. My other neighbour (a good neighbour) moved away last year because he couldn't take it anymore. The thing is that on the other side of our house is a commune of total junkies. It's just constant noise, music (Suomi-rock) and fighting from day to night. Why do you have to shout, when you sit in the same fucking table with the person you're speaking with!?! I'm in a pretty lucky situation because I don't live next door to them. If I lived, my humour would propably end there.

Okay, there's the positive side to this thing too. It's quite entertaining to follow their hassle. There's a tent on their yard, where one of the junkies sleeps, because he hasn't got an apartment right now. People fighting and shouting only their underwears on. Today they even harrassed my other neighbours dog. Just priceless.

So anyone has experiences like this?

Pray tell, where is this wonderful place? Suvela, Korso, or maybe Jakomäki?

Haha, fortunately nothing like that. It's Tiilikangas in Hollola. I don't know about the crimerates, but it's pretty well-known as the area of cheapest apartments around. My friend lives near me and he has had many similar experiences with local lowlives. Maybe not so notoriuous area, but well, there's some bad blood nearly everywhere.

I live in the woods of Espoo, and you can't really see any neighbors from our yard. And yet, one neighbor has a 42-year-old druggie son, who harasses the people around whenever his old man is out of the house. The mother died about three decades ago. His personal record is 28 calls to the police in one night, and what he does is creep to people's yards, look for stuff to steal, and when caught, ask to borrow some loose change or a cell phone, until people tell him to get the fuck off their lawn or something. The stupid thing is that he actually sold some inherited real estate around to a construction company, and got like 1.5 million € for it, so it's about being a drugged dick more than anything else.

Anyway, after telling him to fuck off about five times from our yard, my wife told me to go and check the living room one night, because she heard some noise. I went there, and the bugger was standing in the middle of our living room, drugged off his ass, and mumbled something. I escorted him out (while he kept telling me I was impolite to do it naked, since he was a guest and it's not nice...), called the police, and went to the police station to ask for a restraining order, mostly not to kill him next time. It took a month, and a grand total of 13 minutes in a court room, and I got a restraining order on him for two years. The result: it's been almost four and a half years now, and he hasn't been doing his drunken rounds for a single time yet. I think he went to some serious detox after it, and it might be that I accidentally saved his life. He will wear his butt as a really ugly fedora the next time I find him in our house, though.

The police did tell me that at least six people had asked for a restraining order against the guy before, but all had quit it half-way through, after finding out that they'd have to actually physically go to court to get it. The policeman made certain that I understood that, and said that if I dropped it too, it would be a waste of police resources. But I never quit certain kinds of things, and I think I did a favour for quite a large bunch of people back then. Including the worthless piece of chemically saturated flesh/crap.

Technically I live in a good neighborhood, but it is in fact a terrible neighborhood. A breeding ground for soccer moms, fratboys, retired lawyers and all kinds of people with "king of the world" complex.
I hate every single person that lives near me.

I also lived for some time in a place that was called "the Gaza strip" by the locals. The neighbours themselves were fine, but the place got filled with fucking junkies after sunset. Nothing like waking up at night to the sound of gunshots and police sirens and stuff like that. Good times.

i used to live in a place that was pretty much drug capital of Australia, had some interesting moments, like a car that drove into my neighbours house or having my house robbed a few times(3 in a few months) then we moved to a good area, had a few interesting moments, one where a drunk woman seemed to think she lived in our house, but really lucky to live in a good area that pretty much has no crime

i live in an area with a lot of tree's and no street lights, so in the country and its really creepy getting stuck out at night even if its a very low crime area

I go to a rich University with people like that. Trust me, you would much rather deal with these people than ignorant ghetto druggies.

I've spoken a few times about the deal with some of the terrible neighborhoods in Syracuse. I live right outside of what is probably the best inner-city community inside the city. But, I still live outside of it. There are 200,000 dollar mansions across the street on one block, another block of straight forward hard working families that I'm on, and then the next block over is porch-monkey-ville. It's totally bizarre. Fortunately, I don't have the need to go down there often, but I've still seen my fair share of fights, arsonry, drunks, and arguments between people fighting outside homes, resulting in gun threats, stolen goods, and even in one case, a refrigerator being tossed out of a window. This doesn't really compare to the stuff I saw in the city schools though. I think I'd rather not repeat most of those things and I'll end my description here.

But yeah, dude. I'll never understand how some people don't like rich people. I think most of them are capable of socializing with others based on their character, although there are totally legitimate reasons as to why they avoid people who exhibit those "characteristics" described above.

I've been living in a campus area next to my university for three years now. Surprisingly, I haven't experienced any major nuisances from fellow students. Sure, people have parties every now and then, but they tend not to be too loud (I'm afraid I may have had a few parties and afterparties that have been a nuisance to my neighbours, so I can't really complain).

The neighbourhood next to me, however, is a bit shady and since there's a pub and a bar close to my apartment, some of the more alcohol-prone people tend to spend their days there. Students living in the campus area need to be really careful with locking their bikes because they disappear in a heartbeat if left unlocked.

Edit. Oh yeah, the moment I pressed 'submit', my new neighbour, who moved to the ground floor awhile back, started testing his new PA system. I chuckled a bit when he started playing Scorpion's 'still loving you' at 3.30AM last weekend; I'm sure he had needed to get in the mood for something, but now he's playing Swedish techno and my whisky bottles are shaking because of that.

Damn! Didn't know Finland had a drug problem much at all. I live 15 minutes from downtown Detroit, so you can't go anywhere without finding panhandlers asking for money because their car "ran out of gas" etc. trying to scavenge drug money. Funny thing is that it is mostly white kids from the suburbs.

I haven't experienced anything as bad as some of the horror stories above, but I don't consider myself lucky.

I live in a neighbourhood that seems to attract party animals, coke junkies and rowdy drunkards, every Friday and Saturday evening I have to sleep to the sound of screaming, shouting, fighting, police sirens and loud techno music, some nights I even get contact high from my neighbours who smoke pot in their toke shack, and all the filth from across the river need to go through my neighbourhood to get into town which causes more problems since they're usually high out of their minds and start fights whenever they feel like it.

On New Years day my mother was assaulted in the front garden, police still haven't found the prick that did it.

I fucking hate it here.

I used to live in an area next to a ghetto that was infested with Somalian gangs. Got harrased, robbed and even attacked a few times, but nothing more serious than a stolen iPod. Not a bad neighbourhood, but we used to rent a house from a drug addict (think it was crack). When we moved in there was still obvious remnance of drug use, and she tried to pretend my dad hadn't paid bills he clearly had in order to get drug money. She lived in the place next door and sketchy people would always be showing up. It was a nice place, but we eventually had to move out because of her.

I lived on a pretty rough street in Cork city, it was quite close to a few rough housing estates, it was a ghetto area for lack of a better word. The people who lived above me would stay up until 3am blasting techno music and I can only assume they were off their faces on ex and there was a pub about 40 yards or so away from me where someone was shot with a shotgun.

I live in a pretty wealthy part of the Washington DC suburbs. A couple of years back I moved one town over. I got a sweet deal on rent on a nice little townhouse that's tucked away in the woods. The neighborhood I'm technically a part of is called "Cinnamon Woods" and apparently one of the shadier neighborhoods in the town. I've heard it called "Criminal Woods" or "Cinnamurder Woods" a few times. Anyway, my street is actually not connected to the rest of Cinnamon Woods proper and I get the impression that the isolation (there's a creek with a pretty good belt of trees and a big meadow separating me from the rest of the neighborhood) might help prevent much of the supposed criminal activity from taking place on my street. The crime statistics in the whole neighborhood are generally a hell of a lot lower than where I moved from, though, so I really can't complain.

What I've learned from this thread so far is that awful human beings tend to really like techno.

 the best part about my post is that I hadn't really read too many replies and only did a Ctrl+f for techno and more than me mentioned techno :-D

The advice I can gleam from this now is that when you're next viewing a house ask your estate agent does anyone listen to techno in the area and if s/he answers yes then take a wide berth ;)

I'm curious as to why you choose to live in such bad neighborhoods? Of course I can understand the financial situation - if you can't afford anything else then there is no alternative. But if you do and still choose to stay in some of these areas described above, why stay there?

And if I stayed in a place like that I think I'd seriously consider moving away from town and out towards the country where everything is cheaper.

When I was in Seattle I practically lived next door to the dump.

Should really be all I have to say.

That's pretty much what I did, you get used to it after awhile but moving from a city like Seattle to a small, desert town has some culture(erm... lack of) shock.

I haven't lived in a bad neighbourhood as such, but I did use to live in the dodgiest part of an inner-city suburb. It was an old Queenslander (a spacious house designed for the climate of Queensland) that was divided into several units. I shared a wall with a meth dealer. Now I take the libertarian view that people should be able to put whatever the hell they want into their bodies, but I got thoroughly sick of his customers knocking on my door. That and I had some homeless guy sleeping just outside my window. Another downside was that whenever my music got too loud these arseholes would switch off my power. If they came to my door and asked me nicely, I would have gladly turned the music down. That being said, I still had some good times in that house.

West End, which is a great place if you don't mind hippies and anarchists and lesbians.

This was over ten years ago when the gentrification of the suburb wasn't as prevalent as it is today. Having said that, there still exists a very dodgy element in West End in the more cheaper parts of the suburb.

I'd rather put up with dodgy coke dealing, gangbanger neighbors and a dump then have to live out in the middle of nowhere again.

From the sounds of it the worst part people in this thread have lived in seems far worse than living in a smaller town or village on the countryside. Perhaps that's just me.

I've done a few stints in little villages. They have their benefits (I could play my drums all day, every day, scenery, big house, no crime) but there's plenty of downsides too. I disciplined myself so that hiking became a habit but when a winter storm would roll in you'd just sit at home and drink/smoke pot etc (never really got on the weed, I picked up a bad cigarette habit instead, haha). I've always been someone that drove heaps so I found myself doing regularly 90 minute one way trips to hang out with people, which was ok but certainly a bit annoying, couldn't just drop by a friends' house, etc. I'm sure there's a few ÏMMA BLACK METÄL ISOLATIONIST!!!! dudes that would say this sounds awesome but it's honestly pretty annoying just hanging around at home with no one to talk to and nothing but some books and videogames.

Having said that, overall I recommend it. If the weather's good then being out in the country is best, for sure.

Hells no man, the country is the shit. For most of my life I lived near the downtown area in south Texas and Houston. I've seen some fucked up shit and done some fucked up shit. I'm done hanging out with tweekers and soda heads, of neighbors breaking into homes as soon as you're gone for a couple of hours. I'm sick of people living in fear of guns too afraid to either do something about the burglaries or call the cops when they damn well know who the perps are. I used to love living in the city until I got the opportunity to settle out in the country and I have never looked back. Fuck all that gangbanging bullshit, out here in the country you either get chased by my dogs or you'll get a warning shot just for trespassing.

You could raise a family away from the crime and bullshit people have to endure living so close to each other. Out here people keep to themselves and don't go poking their nose in anybody's business. I've gotten to meet some colorful characters around here like the old man down the street who will invite me over to look for mushrooms in his cow field as long as I take him 'one of them fancy beers from Europe'. His wife passed away some months ago and he seems to enjoy his freedom. Most of his stories involve him getting into some argument with someone until the other person capitulates, and usually about the ranch life like, who could tie the best lasso knot, who was better at rounding up runaway horses, or whose daddy was the baddest cowboy back in the day.

Out here your lady can walk around naked if she wants to without worrying about neighbors peeping or offending anyone because they're all too damn far anyway. You can fuck on a hammock outside if you like. You can actually see the stars at night, hear the birds in the morning, smell the fresh manure in the air, see the cat snatch himself a nice rabbit, or hear the owls screech at night. Once in a while we'll kill a pig and fry and grill all night long while listening to loud shit and nobody will call the cops on ya. You can raise your own rabbits, goats, and sheep. If ya got a green thumb you can grow your own veggies and trade with the neighbors, well with the ones that like to trade.

When I go back to the city I'm astounded how crowded that life seems now; they're practically living on top of each other, you can't even fart for christsakes. If people's yards are not filthy they're wasting water on their pretty lawn. I don't see kids playing outside anymore, they're all inside playing video games trying to stay out of the sun. What's going on? As a kid we used to skate all day long and never once worried about global warming or skin cancer. In the city everybody walks around with a face like they just smelled shit or something. I never noticed how bad customer service was or how rude people were until I moved to the country and heard people call each other by their names at the diner and actually greeted each other without sounding fake. You can get into a long conversation with a stranger or keep quiet in the back and nobody will bother you all the while still getting that friendly service. Back in the city everyone's looking for that one weak spot where to pry you open.

Of course the only worthwhile things to do in the city are attending some music show or event. The only events out here in the country are the livestock show and rodeo, carnivals, the circus, and the mud and monster truck races.

I've lived in a few different cities, but only ever in the suburbs so far. In college it was because I just couldn't find anywhere else closer to the downtown area, and now that I'm working it's just the housing that the paper I work for provided for me. It ain't bad. The neighborhood in college had a few real creepy, weird fucks around. One of them called the cops on me once for parking wrong - and then a few weeks later I came home and saw him standing shirtless in the middle of the road, staring at my house with a vacant-eyed gaze. I locked my fucking doors that night.

The one I live in now is much more pleasant. Nice, working class oil folks. I made friends with one of em already. He has some nice kids.

Early in college, I lived in a dorm. It was OK until my third year when I had a psychotic steroid-addicted roommate who liked to start fights in bars and constantly tried to pick a fight with me over nothing. I was literally afraid to go to sleep with him in the room. That was why I ended up moving out in the first place.

I'd like to live in the country when I'm a bit older and have a serious family or girlfriend/wife. Until then I'd rather be in a more populated area so I can meet more people.

I've always been someone that drove heaps so I found myself doing regularly 90 minute one way trips to hang out with people, which was ok but certainly a bit annoying, couldn't just drop by a friends' house, etc.

When I lived in London it took me over an hour or more to visit my friends. The distance was closer geographically but to get there took a good amount of time. But then again I did not have access to a car.

Its weird how mentality changes. In London I was ok with traveling for an hour on public transportation to visit a friend. In Stockholm an hour on public transportation means a bigger geographical distance and therefore feels longer and to travel like this just to visit someone feels like like a chore. I imagine 60 minutes by car on the countryside feels perfectly natural and ok since distances are naturally so much longer there.

For me though I could never live in a really bad neighborhood if I had the option to live somewhere else. Doesn't matter if I'm a little bit further away from people. I'd do good anyway.

I live in a somewhat trashy neighborhood of Laval, it kinda was a suburb of Montréal but it's pretty much the city now since it grew a lot. We have 3 metro stations connected to Montréal and one is in my neighborhood Pont-Viau, it certainly helped the place as it made the rents more expensive. It certainly is still a bit rough, I've never seen anything and I always felt safe even when I'm walking outside at 1 am (I'm big so I guess it would be different if I was a woman or something). My mom and I were living in another apartment 3 years ago, while it wasn't far from where I am now (bigger house with her boyfriend, nice place, nicer street), it was fucking trashy because of the neighbors. The woman upstairs was an Haitian prostitute and her boyfriend was probably her pimp and he was violent, he was arrested once and the cops had to call another police car since he was resisting, it was funny/sad to watch -_-

Oh and last month, someone stole my mom's boyfriend car. It was 3 am, we were all sleeping and the woman living upstairs (it's a duplex) called us because she was still awake and knew something was wrong. My mom went outside, the car was leaving. They called the cops and they found the car abandoned near, intact. Still, the thief stole 2 cellphones, my mom's boyfriend wallet, the keys... We had to change all the locks and stuff. When I'll can, I'll move to Montréal. Even though I'm near the city, the commuting is shit at night as it's two different societies so I can't really go out late, the freaking metro should be 24/7, it closes for like 4 hours...

And yeah, Marag, you indeed sound like a whiny privileged white teen.

Did you miss the part of his post where he talks about gunfire and police sirens? That sounds like a worse place than where you are at...

nah nah Morrigan, the part that I (and I assume tony) found disagreeable was this:

Technically I live in a good neighborhood, but it is in fact a terrible neighborhood. A breeding ground for soccer moms, fratboys, retired lawyers and all kinds of people with "king of the world" complex.
I hate every single person that lives near me.

We hear quite a few police sirens from our house in Bunbury (or as the locals call it, bunnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaz), but it's generally just them chasing dudes doing burnouts in their HSV's and shit. My neighbourhood is kinda boring, especially after living in Margs but all things considered I have no reason to complain.

Hey now lad, what was so passive about that?

Out of curiosity markoff, what suburb?

West End, which is a great place if you don't mind hippies and anarchists and lesbians.

Was the lesbian part really necessary? Haha.

I get the impression that some people are blowing up their situations to a larger extent than they really are. I mean, I live in Edmonton, Alberta, and Millwoods isn't the greatest place in the world past midnight, but only once in my now 26 years of life have I ever been accosted. The big thing is to just be smart. If you see a group of people walking down the road at night, just be safe, and find another way. They could be the nicest of people, but it's better to be safe than sorry. It's not cowardly to take precautions.

Also, I don't know why the fuck people would rather live in a shit neighbourhood than live around a bunch of rich people. I mean, yeah, some of 'em are assholes, but at least they won't rob you for fuck sakes.

Won't rob you, quieter (generally), suburb looks nicer- when I get my teaching degree I'll be stoked if I can land a school in a rich neighbourhood.

I tried that one time. Got up after finishing and I was covered in net marks from the hammock mesh. I felt like a salami or some kind of ham.

I live in a 99 percent white middle-class/working class neighborhood. My street is one of the oldest in town and there is barley any crime. I lived here all my life and it's been a great place to grow up and grow old in. The only draw back has been the developments that popped up all over in the 90's and early 00's, which destroyed a lot of the woodlands and fields, plus a lot of rich D-bags from the city (philadelphia/New York) moved in the area, so thanks for the recession they can't build anymore.
