I do. In fact, right now I have one. Thankfully I can do stuff from Safe mode. I absolutely hate them. I got it just by looking up the difference between a remix and a remaster, on a seemingly unsuspicious website. GAAAAAAAH! :fuck: :brick: I don't know if rant topics are allowed, but this one is worthy, as I'm sure we all hate them. (Right?)

I hated them 5 years ago, but that's before I started using palemoon with various addons(probably more effective than actual antivirus), and malwarebytes. I was really bad with them 10 years ago.

Back when I was still using Internet Explorer exclusively, I would get the occasional virus / malware infection. Homepage hijacking, new and unwanted desktop icons, stuff like that. Nothing that rendered the computer un-useable, thankfully, but pretty annoying nonetheless.

I don't have the energy to completely abandon Windows like the more radical Mac or Linux advocates would suggest, but ditching IE, installing a free anti-virus program, and running the occasional Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan have kept me clean for years.

Oh yeah, I also like this program called Secunia PSI which scans all the other programs on the computer and makes sure they're the most secure, up to date versions.

I am thinking very seriously about ditching IE and just using Firefox, and Chrome to translate an occasional webpage. Thankfully, I haven't had any real bad viruses yet, but just annoying ones that won't go away (like the rootkit on my computer now). Good thing I am using Avira and Malwarebytes (they have block almost everything, except rootkits).

Why would anyone use IE ever?

The best anti-virus is the computer user. Don't use Internet Explorer, don't click on suspicious links, don't run suspicious scripts. You say you got a virus from an unsuspicious site; you might've gotten a virus that was programmed to stay dormant for a bit before that.

^ This.

I'd like to add that anti-viruses are mostly snake oil. They make the average user feel safe and get careless. They also slow down your computer. Being aware of the the main dangers (java, downloaded exe files), common sense and healthy distrust is much more effective. Always remind yourself that complete safety doesn't exist, especially with a Windows PC. Using Windows is like running around with a big bullseye on your forehead (but don't delude yourself; the only reason macs don't get attacked as much is that they are less common).

honestly I haven't used an anti-virus in years and I don't get viruses. Maybe I'm just an unadventurous web browser.

Also, even the people who would write viruses acknowledge the fact that anyone deluded into using a Mac has already been punished enough for a lifetime.

Computer without anti-virus = no problems as long as you're not screwing around too much
Computer with anti-virus = constant slow-downs due to updates every 10 goddamn minutes

I'm sure there's good anti-virus software out there that doesn't fuck around, but whatever, I've also went without one for years and don't get viruses, at least none that I'm noticing.

You should always be using this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... s-download
Run this every once in a while: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
And using this if you have any problems with odd popups, redirects, or anything else that MWB doesn't cover: http://support.kaspersky.com/5350?el=88446

Common sense is too much to expect from users, but AV software is useful. There's no reason Windows users shouldn't use MSSE, but it isn't going to stop non-savvy users from getting viruses simply because they never learned to tell the difference between normal things and shady things.

The misconception that Macs don't get viruses, as well as their increasing market share has led to Macs being a popular target for viruses that aim to gather credit card numbers and things like that.

Mainly because Mac users have already proven themselves willing to throw away money.

I haven't dealt with a virus in my system for years. I started learning many cool things about how they work, Java exploits, Windows tasks. Now I repair computers on the side and I use that money for CD's :-D

For Windows I use Firefox with Adblock Edge, Noscript, and HTTPS Everywhere. I use Avast as my antivirus because it is lightweight and comes with a boot-time scanner (AND IT'S FREE!).

Cthulhu_Fhtagn, use Hiren's Boot CD and burn it to a blank CD. Then boot into mini-Windows XP and run a scan on your hard drive with Malwarebytes. It should be better once you do that.

Not really. Sometimes I feel like Boris Grishenko from GoldenEye and yell out "I AM INVINCIBLE!" once I get it removed.

It's always good to be dualbooting between some linux/unix OS and your primary to have it as a failsafe if something goes awry software side. I also second what wombat said.

This site has helped me at least twice when I had a really bad virus. It was probably from downloading some game.

Well, not if we're talking about the live scan feature, which is the main selling point of antiviruses. A program that checks every file that W$ accesses will slow down your PC, no matter what. Malwarebytes Anti-malware is good because its a scanner but not a live scanner. You have to tell it what to do, but it seems most people can't handle that responsibility.

Malwarebytes is the best Ive used. I also have avg pro. I was using avast, but got rid of it a few months ago, since when it upgraded to 8, it gave me problems. I tried it again, and it said my pro license expired, when I originally did a trial, but wouldnt go to free.
I scan with malwarebytes daily(quick scan) and do a full scan once a week. Same with AVG. I just do it when watching a movie/tv. I do a defrag once a week too and my pc is never slow.

I actually have Malwarebytes installed, just haven't had any problems so haven't used it in ages. It did help me out a number of times in the past though.

One of the nice thing about using Linux is that I install all my software from my distro's package repository, so it's always clean and usually free (as in freedom).

Anyways, I did accidentally install a trojan once back when I used windows. I'm not sure exactly why, but I ended up on a page with one of those obviously fake "Your computer is infected! Install X!" messages with a popup dialog. I don't recall how, but I did end up downloading it and running it which prompted the installation. Thankfully, it was just annoying advertisements and an attempt to make me purchase the software to fix my computer. I ended up just using Spybot S&D and it got rid of it. At some point later, I stopped using antiviruses all together because they were just annoying, and I just browsed more safely (switched to firefox with ad block plus, https everywhere, noscript, etc.)

And then I eventually said "fuck proprietary software," and switched to linux.

Another vote for the "keep calm and install linux" contingent. Never had a problem since I switched.

I actually have a topic on there right now, and am currently in the process of being helped by one of their people. I currently use Avira and Malwarebytes, which has worked very well in the past, but they don't stop rootkits.

The apple hits in this thread are gold. Although, everything said about all the platforms so far has been pretty accurate. I agree, the best anti-virus is the user. I don't even have anything proper installed, just Avast, which to my knowledge is just a bare bones free program but it does the trick when combined with cautiousness and lots of internet experience.

I had a virus recently that kept producing pop ups, added toolbars, created links through many words on random websites, installed software i didn't want etc. Malewarebytes cleared it up for me easily.

How do you guys get viruses? What are you clicking on -ads? pop-ups? Seriously, forget anti virus software, all you need is a bit of common sense. It's easy to avoid them entirely if you know what to look out for.

I think the most common mistake is when people go to download something and they cannot find the correct download link. quite often there will be an ad with a big "download" link you may mistake for the link to the thing you actually wanted to download. To be honest this has nearly happened to me a few times. Just make sure you always look at the type of file you're downloading and the file size to get an idea that what you're downloading is the thing you wanted.

Computer viruses - Aaaarrrggghhhh!! But that was way too long ago.
Now, I'm using a genuine OS [Windows 7] + the free Miscrosoft Security Essentials installed + regular automatic updates and boom! I'm almost 3 years free of being annoyed by this computer viruses.
I've been downloading anything from the internet, encountered lots of pop-ups due from random websites [usually from porn sites] and still my computer is running great.

Computer virii? I'm unaware of this problem, isn't that a problem that plagues windoze? hehe I kid really, well kinda... I use Linux mainly so it doesn't really affect as most Linux related malware targets servers and even then it's rare. I use Windows 7 occasionally to game and I have Microsoft Security Essentials and that's enough. The end user is the best protection. You wouldn't go and find the most STI ridden person alive and sleep with them and assume you're ok because you have a condom on would you? same as downloading stuff from dodgy sources. In a contradiction to my first sentence, Windows 7 has gotten a lot better in recent years when it comes to Malware.

The problem with Windows is that the security access isn't built into the NT kernel like it is in the Linux kernel or the MACH/NEXTStep kernel or any Unix like operating system. It's a set of utilities built on top of the kernel running in user space and it's way too easy to gain adminstrator access. By default most Unix operating systems won't let you have root access where Windows allows you administratorial control by default.

Dude, not everyone is a Linux sysadmin :P. Was this post really necessary? I use Windows on my computers at home, but I used Linux (Ubuntu specifically) every day at work. Also, you sure about that last part? Usually to invoke admin privileges on my Windows machine (with my sole account), I have to explicitly specify that I want to run a program as administrator. Usually I'm greeted with some prompt along the lines of "Are you sure you want to make these changes?", and I just click yes. In Linux, if using the terminal, usually you type "sudo whatever-the-command-is" to run a program as root, provided you enter your password. Linux is still better in this case because, well, you need to know your password each time as opposed to just clicking yes!

Unless there's something that I'm misunderstanding here, I don't think your last sentence is 100% true.

The last two times I had a virus-type problem, it happened on my work computer!...which is supposedly heavily protected by "state-of-the-art" software from Mcafee (who have always rated rather poorly in the industry as I understand it, yet they seem to have a monopoly on a lot of commercial systems). I got them from sites that I visited on a regular basis and never had any problems with before, like a horror/SF/fantasy film review site. It's a bitch to get rid of these things because they won't let us install software and Mcafee detects them but only after they've done their dirty work, and it can't clean shit.

I highly recommend Firefox/Palemoon or Opera and install a bunch of addons. You can easily block bad sites with the right addons and never get pop ups.
