DIE HARD (Sweden) "Evil Always Return" CD EP review by http://www.metalcrypt.com

Image

By Michel Renaud

A short and sweet one from Die Hard this time around, Evil Always Return is the band's 2008 EP. Raw, heavy, pounding, bloodthirsty Death/Thrash is what's on the menu here. Clean, but harsh throaty vocals spit the hate above it all – takes a little getting used to here and there. This stuff is pretty old school, sounding like 80s raw Thrash but heavier and messier. The closing track "Beneath Pain and Death" even has a "70s meet 80s" kind of occult vibe, just with the heaviness and speed cranked up quite a bit. This may just last a little over 20 minutes, but it takes you from slow and heavy to fast-as-fuck in one hell of a rollercoaster ride. I found this one hard not to play over and over all day, when in the right mood.

FESTER (Norway) "Winter of Sin" DIGI CD review by http://www.vs-webzine.com

Image

By Dark Rabbit

While there the children if you want the home kvlte kvlte, you will be served! Here we touch the finger at a form of absolute, sublime! So young, Abyss Records has made up his mind to reissue the debut album from 1992 Fester. Go old, lifts his legs were very high! But do a little archeology. Long ago, a young Swede named Thomas Nyquist metal moved by the excitement crackling around him, decided to start a zine saddled with the sobriquet of Putrefaction country Mag. Kvlte ! Kvlte! Stitches in Time and strength of commitment, our young hairy eventually founded the label No Fashion Records. Kvlte power spin a mile beginning of erection to our national Zoltar!

"Winter of Sin" is the second release of the label and the first to be pressed on CD. But be careful, I can already see that this is still sigh of Death Metal from Stockholm. Well actually, it's not quite it. First, our lads are not studded Swedes and Norwegians, but especially our long-haired hell of Music offers a rather unique. Particular, use the term loosely because actually it goes back to that time between wolves and dogs when stylistic boundaries were completely porous.

Okay, but the Death of heavy, slow, this copula as well with Black Sabbath, as Bathory or Death. Florida's influence is present especially in solos or all of these ornate bridges instrumental riffs typical of the era. Somewhere and being a little provocative, take the first album Paradise Lost, remove it the gothic atmosphere and replace it with the excitement of the glorious past Nordic warrior. He must lose one eye to see it but there's a Viking on the mountain trying to invoke the gods. Death is therefore a good Doomy away by the epic of a black-based melodic tremolo and sublimated few passages at the keyboard, narratives and more atmospheric passages while melancholic arpeggios. And then there's this song Crow éructée flayed by a vocalist halfway between Schuldiner and Burzum which plunges us deeper into the intricacies of Black.

From a sound point of view, our Scandinavian adventure has been remastered and thus provides sound quality quite acceptable by today's standards. The risk still remains to be shocked for those who are accustomed Beats Bionic enriched synthetic products. The sound is good but it's kind of good roots.

Except a few bonus live song from 1991 and produced their first demo. A title filled with enough air instrumental passages that roams on a good ten minutes. The sober but gigipack class and the book recalls a brief history of the group and the concert in question while delivering a few amusing anecdotes. Personally, I like enough to immerse myself in the context of the time.

Surprisingly, even today the proposed mix remains relatively relevant because it is quite unusual to hear such an alloy types. I have already mentioned but at the time all these beautiful streams which now cause life crises in your servant, were less marked. All these beautiful people mingled merrily without worrying about if it were Death or Black or whatever else ... It must be said that in the land of the Vikings, Bathory has influenced both the Death Black.

Ultimately, we are dealing with an album prehistoric but keeps its freshness in relation to a certain conformism and platitudes that plague some of our wild world. A truly rejuvenating nostalgic for wrinkly like me and maybe an object of curiosity for the young history buffs.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by http://www.apochs.net

Image

By apochs.net

Those of you who may have missed out on the Chalice of Black Flames demo that was released earlier this year by the Black/Death Metal act Chaossworn, now is your chance to grab it. This Swedish act originally started out under the name Cryptic Death around 2004, only to release three demos and an EP before changing their name to Chaossworn in late 2009, perhaps as a way to distance themselves further from their Symphonic Black Metal roots. The band's demo of the same name was recently picked up by Abyss Records, this demo turned domestic retail EP, which was mixed and mastered by none other then Dan Swanö, features the same three songs and offers nothing new to the fan who already owns the demo. However, if you're new, it offers a little more then fifteen minuteus of well composed metal that will have fans howling along with the recording in pure delight.

The music on this release doesn't necessarily break from a heavy and sometimes haunting slower pace, but on occassion does seem to speed up here and there throughout the three songs, but not enough to completely throw the flow of the music completely out of whack. "Bringer of Storms", however, finds the band picking up the speed for a more Black Metal oriented track as opposed to "Crowned & Winged" as well as the title track "Chalice of Black Flames", both of which seem to have a heavier Death Metal feel that causes the music to move at a slower, more hard hitting pace, while the Black Metal elements set the perfect atmosphere of haunting emptiness. Each track on here flows nicely from start to finish, and from one to another, without getting repetitive, and leaving the listener wanting more.

The production of the album is rather clean and professional as opposed to a more raw sound. This, however, leads the music to wander near the borders of the Symphonic Black Metal territory the band had left behind. The haunting and hollow atmosphere presented on Chalice of Black Flames rings true to many Symphonic Black metal acts such as Emperor, especially during the more slower paced tracks "Crowned & Winged" and "Chalice of Black Flames". This is not a bad aspect to the release at all, as it only works to enhance the overall ambience being presented that may have been ruined by a more raw production since everything on this release manages to work in full harmony with one another. All of the tracks on this release show great promise from the band to weave grim sounding tracks will lure the listener in like a Siren to the open sea venturer.

Chalice of Black Flames shows impeccable potential from this Black and Death Metal act. With it's only real downfall being that it's simply a fifteen minute EP, it does welcome to the new listeners in nicely by introducing the band and what they are capable of without leaving a stone of this new monicker's soon to be past unturned. Hopefully we'll see some kind of compilation album featuring the demo tracks and EP under the name Cryptic Death, but what is more important is the future full-length album and the material that will be present. If the band can manage to focus on composing more tracks like those on this EP, and build up off of them more then what is present here, then Chaossworn will be a band to keep a very close eye on. As for the EP, the music here is fantastic, and well worth being tracked down.

BANE (Serbia) "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" DIGI CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

You wouldn't think of Serbia as a hotbed for metal acts quite yet, but in fact there are a hundred or so bands hailing from the area, one of whom I present to you here. Bane, not at all to be confused with the popular US hardcore band, performs a mix of black and death metal with strong production and an intense focus on the riffing over sheer vitriolic speed, their debut Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness a decent if familiar work that may indeed appeal to fans of numerous genres. The 'death metal' portion of the album manifests largely through some of the chugging riff patterns and about 50% of the vocals, which are splayed out in guttural excess, while the remainder consists of streaming, cutting chords and rampant snarling.

Bane certainly sounds like a great deal of other bands, in particular Norse bands like Emperor in collision with Swedish bands like Dark Funeral or Hypocrisy, but I'd say they cast a wide enough net that you don't feel the material is too derivative of any one school of fish. Perhaps the strongest point of this full-length debut is that the band pace themselves well, offering some variety through the track list that keeps the listener engaged, though not exactly glued. The "Awakening of the Evil Spirits" intro is a nice synthesized classical overture breached by the hammering of "The True Insomnia", a piece that quite evenly divides its time between the two constituent genres, while "Pandemonium" writhes along at a brisk, mid pace through which the thunder of the rhythms is glazed over in chorus shouts, double bass and brisk flights of increased speed. After this is an acoustic piece, "Lost Shadows", and then a fairly brutal onslaught called "Abhorrence".

No two songs sound quite the same, and each delivers at least 1-2 quality riffs, my personal favorites coming in the melodic swagger of "The Haunting Presence" or the callous, blasting abandon of "The Dawn No More Rises". There's a nice ambient interlude piece deeper in the album titled "Dysthymia" which further cements the band's ability to vary up their content that the witness remain allured, but I wouldn't say that this was necessarily a great record, if only because there aren't enough tracks that you'll want to revisit constantly. Fans of bigger budget Swedish or Norse melodic black metal might very well find this their cup of blood tea, because the mix itself is quite enormous, and the compositions are never boring, but they're not blazing any new trails through the conscience. So, what we're ultimately left with is a debut that shows the talent and reach of a batch of individuals (all of whom also perform in other acts), but does little to bore itself beyond the upper layers of memory.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by http://www.hellridemusicforums.com

Image

By Janet Willis

Now this is the stuff!!!!! These bastards took classic filth and fury thrash, Motorhead riffing and classic metal rhythms, some of the most vile and essential black metal oldschool (Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, and Scorched Earth immediately come to mind upon the first dosing of this stuff) and give it to you packaged as MAAX. This stuff has the immense booming drums, breakneck whirlwind riffs and pace, and the under-produced gruff vocals that just summon total pandemonium. It’s as deafening as a typhoon of pissed off mutant hornets, and any bit as two-fisted as a captive tornado of Satan Worshipping Bikers with a massive case of withdrawals. This EP will rip the testicles of old Lemmy himself, or at least the horrid warts on his face. Packed with an attitude and as much heat as a fat trucker fart after a long binge of convenience store and greasy spoon crud, this is filth and fury at it one of it’s finest hours. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming release this year as well.

Seriously essential for fans of: Celtic Frost, Venom, early Bathory, Darkthrone, Kreator, Scorched Earth, Immortal.

FESTER (Norway) "Silence" Remastered DIGI CD review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Adrian

Fascinating album, very interesting and at the same time controversial. The closest definition I could come up with on the music presented here is Dark Metal and that's only the music has a general dark atmosphere, but you should imagine a combination of: Hard'n"Heavy guitar riffs with occasional Doomy passages, a slight Black Metal feeling here and there, melodic guitar leads, a light Thrashy mid-tempo rhythm section and vocals that mostly range within the whisperings tonalities. The album was first released by Lethal Records in 1993, so given the controversial times in Norway with all that Black Metal stir happening, it was quite odd for them to choose this less aggressive, but still very sombre style. A lesson of swimming against the currents. I like this album much more than their previous, "Winter of Sin", the band added good keyboard background and also the sound is much better.

SINCERA (Norway) Interview by Occult Black Metal Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you tell us a little bit about this project for those that are not familiar with your band?

Sincera started up back in 2002 as a project with members from FESTER, Algol, Wither and Decipher. The thought was to make music a bit different than with our main bands. The sound is old school as us, and a mix of several styles

2. How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the album?

The riffs are from slow to fast, the vocals are screamy, the drums are from blasts to slow..Most people who have heard SIncera finds it to be Black/Death. I think it has lots of elements from the Greece BM scene in the early 90's, but also elements from the swedish death scene, and mid 80's thrash scene.. As always, it's difficult to put your music in a booth, when your not trying to create a sertain style..

3. What are some of the lyrical topics the band explores with the music?

The topics we write about evolves around subjects as witches, ancient warriors, anti christianity, winter/nature and the freedom of dying.. We are not bound in writing about sertain themes or issues, so the themes are not carved in stone, but one cant write about flower picking when the riffs, vocals and drums burns like a flame !

4. You have a very original name for an underground metal band, where did you get the idea for the bands name?

He he, we where originally nameless for a long period. We just played harsh music for our own pleasure.. When we did our first show, we had to have a name, and used Evening..
As it was kind of dull, we took the name SIncera. It's a therm the the ancient Romans used for statues that where so perfect that they didnt need to be waxed. Without cracks: it was Sincera.

5. When I listened to the album, the first half of the album was studio material and the other half was live material and I noticed the live songs had more aof a raw sound than the studio material, do you consider yourselfs more of a live band than a studio band?

I think the live part on the album turned out just as raw and harsh that we hoped for. The sound is taped of a handheld camera to create that old school raw, and dirty feel. I think it represents us quit well. The studio sound could, and should have been a bit rawer, but then again, if we had done that , the live part wouldt have felt as raw as it does. I would agree with you that the eccense of Sincera come forth better live than in studio,so :Yes.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and what can we expect from your life performance?

Personally I loved a gig we did with Ragnarok and Drepjard, in Ragnaroks hometown in 2005 was great! Big crowd, the response was great, and the whole set just went like fire in dry gras. It was a blast !!! I think the show that some of the songs on the cd is taken from, a show with Witchhammer, also was great.. Though we had some issues with the sound, and a broken bass drum.. Ha ha..

7. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

No one... We have other things that ocupies our lifes right now, so ther will not be a tour supporting this release. That being said, we will continue to do shows in the future, and mayby we will support our next release with a tour? Only time will show.

8. How have metal fans reacted to your musical sound worldwide?

The response has been great so far, and we really apriciate it!SIncera has always been cept as a small secret though, so it will be cool to see what a bigger audience will say.

9. What can we expect on future releases?

Although you can hear some FESTER elements, Algol elements etc, I reccon you can expect a more brutal and rawer kind of style. We will always walk the street to the old school though, and I think the street is called blackened Death metal with a twist(..)

10. What are some of the main inspirations for the music of the band?

SIncera's members has always made almost equaly same ammount of music that has been put into the band.. One can hear that the inspiration has a wide range, but I think a lot of the old black and death bands, as well as Kreator, Soilwork and Pestilence are great insipration sources for our work.

11. I have noticed the music sound is firmly rooted in the early 90's underground metal, what is your opinion on the more modern bands, I have noticed alot of older metal musicians are not really into the newer sounds that are coming out these days?

You know, dont ever teach an old dog to barf... Things were always better in the old days.. Ha ha.. I dont care if the band is new or old, but I can agree on the fact that the best music, in my ears, was made 20 years ago, and more.. But I find several bands in the scene today great as well. The problem is that there are just to many bands, to many releases, and so many bands looking and sounding just the same. I think it kills some of the foundation that this music has. But I love the new releases of Forgotten woods, The Konsortium and Dead To This World. And Ghost....

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

I hope people will check out our record "Cursed and proud", and also check out FESTER's comeback release later this year- " A celebration of death ". Play your music LOUD, and dont ever let anyone put you down!

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.metalunderground.com

Image

By CROMCarl

Maax returns with "Unholy Rock & Roll," the band's second album and follow-up to 2009's "Dawnbringer." It’s easy to see that this Indiana five piece draws its influences from the unholiest of the unholy Venom (perhaps a little too much influence) with a hefty dose of Motorhead. Maax is black metal the way it was originally intended, satanic fueled rock from the depths of Newcastle....check that, Indianapolis. Maax is what Blasphemy would have sounded like had the band been tolerable.

With the sonic assault "bursting out" and the beaten evil vocals of Tim "raising the dead," the band literally reinvents "Welcome to Hell" and "Black Metal" from the ultra catchy distorted riffs right down to the muddy production values. It is true black 'n' roll and a whole lot of fun to listen to if you can tolerate the debauchery for 45 minutes. Lyrically, the band would make Lamashtu blush, invoking evil, Satan, violence, drinking, sex, and motorcycles in a nefarious cacophony of rancorous, repugnant, maniacal hedonism. The band is unabashed in its viewpoints...as the track "Maax" will explain.
Maax does nothing intricate, progressive or anything that would be found on the cover of Guitar Magazine. You won't find corporate endorsements or glamorous press photo shoots. Maax gets the formula though: keep it simple, stupid. They are a throwback to a time when it just didn't matter, metal was just cantankerous, boisterous and loud. You play...you drink...you throw up the horns...you drink...you urinate on the crowd..you drink...you destroy the stage...you drink...you leave. It is brutally honest and brutally played.

The most memorable of tracks include "Fight With Fire," "Unholy Rock & Roll," "Maax," "Rot And Roll’" and "Black Thrash'Em All." Are they well played? By highly skilled musician standards, probably not. However, for the fan that loves metal pure, unfiltered, underproduced, and honestly played with a talent level slightly higher than that of early Venom...f**k yeah! Unlike other critics who spew negative reactions when a band fails to show an annual progression and consistently invent "new ideas," this one prefers when metal is just metal and stays that way. With no disrespect, if you want different, there is a dazzling array of jazz to keep you occupied.

Highs: brutal, honest black 'n' roll from the depths of hades...

Lows: ...but there can be only one Venom!

Bottom line: "Welcome to Hell"....Maax plays metal with "No Remorse!"

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

A successful union between the black and death metal formats is trickier than one might assume, despite the two styles' natural aesthetic overlap and general acceptance within each others' rabid fan bases. Often we have turned to Sweden for such transference, and bands like Dissection, Lord Belial, Sacramentum, The Crown, and to a lesser extent Marduk or Dark Funeral have all paved the way for a number of younger acts who wish to keep their sounds expansive by incorporating elements from both of these extremities. The worst of these will sound glaringly foolish as they ramble to and forth, trying to fit each mold and winding up in some awkward space that honors neither.

The best of these will simply transfuse their own creative energies with the influences of both overarching genres and transition to something personal and convincing. Chaossworn is not the 'best' of anything, but they do successfully conjure a spark of depressive, dense gloom here on this official EP pressing of their Chalice of Black Flames demo, a mellower alternative to, say, Sacramentum, with vocals that range from tearing rasps to a massive growling depth which recalls Mikael Åkerfeldt (perhaps Bloodbath more so than Opeth). Most impressively, these Swedes, who had existed for years prior as the demo level act Cryptic Death, are capable of writing a sequence of riffs that explore a multitude of downward climes and harrowing emotions without ever tiring the listener, so this is 15 minutes that might be worth sharing if you appreciate the moodier hybrid bands.

"Crowned & Winged" begins with a pattern of storm and gentle acoustic guitar presence that transforms into some heavily atmospheric, moody melodic death metal, plucking rhythms counteracted by thundering double bass and rampant Dissection-like riffs. "Bringer of Storms" emits a thick, bludgeoning wall of black conjuration interlaced with deep melodies that hang upon the precipice of the attention span, ;ater breaking into a series of carnal verses and slower passages over which a deep, gothic narrative vocal will join in the growling. "Chalice of Black Flames" itself might mislead the listener into a 'lull', deceptively the least aggressive of the three compositions, but by far the most evil and ensnaring if you can plumb its ominous depths.

The material falls somewhere short of stunning, yet competent and well-balanced enough that it should see the band forward for a longer playing effort. Certainly I would suggest a fan of the aforementioned bands check this out, for you might be surprised. I was also reminded of a few of the better tracks off the new Watain record, which rate a similar feel of dense production and possession. There is nothing crude about Chaossworn, and they have a promising future if they can pull off some slightly more memorable fare to indulge all who submit to their sweeping, weeping black flame fathoms.

Verdict: Win [7.25/10] (wield unclean malice)

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

Hat is another of the recent crop of Norse black metal acts that I felt I could go either way on, but they've thankfully incorporated enough of an adventure into their sophomore Vortex of Death that I found myself drawn back to its contents a number of times, thanks to some savvy riffing, decrepit atmosphere and hints of experimentation which leave the safety and sanctity of their primary genre for a balanced, atmospheric leverage that simply functions. The material is often as primal and ambivalent as the next underground band, but enough thoughts are provoked through its composition that a close listen will reveal thoughtful passages of repressed synthesizers, whispered dialog/vocals and other tricks of the night.

However, it doesn't always shake the straightforward blast and weave of sobering familiarity, and there are moments of "Inhumanus Revelatio", "Overmenneske" or "The Flesh I Wear" which are hardly as compelling as others within the very same tracks. The guitars are thin and bristling, the drums barely noticed without their crashing vortices of support for the rasping and tearing of the vocals. On the whole, this level of sound actually suits the material quite well, because it creates a pattern of depth, like one being in front of the other, as if the band were playing at you from a series of hills, each piled with bones and cinders. The result is that some of the moodier, slower pieces like "The Path to Immortality", or the shifting "Invocating Death" with its stark and engrossing bridge sequence gone mad with rushing, blood stream riffs that channel eerie beauty, are well worth hearing even if the album is not entirely consistent.

I'll admit that I don't remember much about the band's debut The Demise of Mankind, but I can recall the band's name and logo, and with Vortex of Death, I'll be sure to keep them on my watch list. The delivery here is not stunning, nor staggering, but both convex and insular. Evil, and at its very best, mildly alien in composition, which is always sure to draw the ear deeper than your run of the mill black metal album about forests, snow and Satan. Not that Hat are writing about ponies, mind you, the band's name is Norwegian for hate, and their music is neither comfortable nor compromising, but they will not betray your attention span with needless, excess repetition or recycling all of the precise tropes that you might have grown tired of over the past 20 years they were hammered into you.

Verdict: Win [7.5/10]

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) Interview by http://allabouttherock.co.uk

Image

By Dave O'Gorman

Dave interviews Praetorian (Guitars, Keys & Vocals) from Irish Black Metal band Eternal Helcaraxe.

How did the band get going, what were you guys looking to achieve?

It started with two friends that just loved early Norwegian Black Metal really, started meeting up and writing and rehearsing and it just gelled well together, that’s about as exciting as it was!

Having known you guys for a while now, I get the impression that you consider everything very carefully before making a move and this appears to have served you well as each live performance is very very tight and also each release has been sick. I imagine everything that the band does must give you a great sense of achievement as nothing is forced?

Yeah, well there is no point in doing it by half’s. There are already way too many crap bands saturating the whole music scene as it is. Besides, we love the work involved in the band more than the feedback or the egos that seem to be involved with so many other bands that we have to deal with.

What are you trying to achieve sound wise – there is certainly an Irish influence and I get the impression that you are proud Irishmen but again it is not forced. It is not like here is the metal bit and then there’s a load of tin whistles, it is altogether more subtle than that; again what are you guys looking to achieve?

I’m really not mad into the whole whistle thing to be honest. I think it sounds fucking terrible! No, all the music and lyrics just come together really. It’s never forced or “trying to sound like someone”. Again, there are way too many bands trying to do that at the moment. Once a band starts doing well, it seems like a load of bands go down the same road as them.

Are you pleased with Against All Odds? It is an incredible record.

Thanks. Yeah, really happy with this release and the way in which it was received. The reviews and all that seem to be going well too.

What is next for the band?

We’re heading into the studio in three weeks’ time for record the 7? split with that’s gonna be released through “Elemental Nightmares”! It’s gonna be cool, it’s a vinyl project that will consist of 26 bands with 26 brand new and unreleased tracks, on 13, 7? vinyl’s! When fully collected, the 13 vinyls will form one huge piece of artwork! The splits will be limited to 300 copies and will all include high quality digital downloads of the songs. Check out the link: https://www.elemental-nightmares.com/index.php

We’ll also be Re-releasing ‘To Whatever End’ in this session. For the re-release, we’re re-recording the songs Palest Kingdom, Burning light and The undying lands from our first demo Palest Kingdom as bonus tracks, so hopefully they will come out the way we what them to this time. The songs from To Whatever End, we’re keeping the way they are, I always loved that release.

A lot of people at the moment are also asking for a vinyl pressing of ‘To Whatever End’ and ‘Against All Odds’ on vinyl. So I think once we’ve got through all the things we’re doing at the moment that would be an idea.

Are you guys following Darkthrone in the playing live stakes? Again you guys seem to consider very carefully what gigs you play. I was blown away by your support slot with Negative Plane – it was close to a religious experience that night incredible bands.

Not really we try to pick gigs that we think will suit us musically and actually benefit the band.

How does it work out having brothers in the band? Does it get heated?!?

Haha, Sometime. But it’s always for the better of the band, never personal. Myself and Tyrith do most of the writing these days and sometime we’re just looking for different thing for some parts of the songs. But we always walk away happy in the end.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by From Beyond Metal Fanzine

Image

By GV

Witnessing the horendas respuetstas of life, live in a Tower of Babel, where we do not know which starts and ends early existence, inevitably unequivocally, we are in a world pretentiously savagely and cruelly lacking valid responses and existentialists, is just diving into the deep sea of "unreality" and a vacuum postularnos full of inaccuracies, there at that place are very calm, in the presence and calm waiting for works such as this the reissue of the album which originally dates from 2004, just now published by the Abyys Records, skillfully takes us to what we might call proto doom rock, setentoso own about Black Sabbath, and definitive cornerstone reference ethos based sounds psychedelic and hippy, the dark, dream-inspired thematic discussion intrinsic life-death-reality-fiction. We have a formidable demonstration environments guitars and own the very same retro rockers and the aforementioned stoner-rock proto-doom, one reissue that is well worth taking into account, for his way of dealing with nobility and integrity a genre that refuses flatly to disappear, as long as there bands like The Gates of Slumber, we can rest assured, the cradle of Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Cathedral and precursors of "Circle of True Doom."

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by http://www.slugmag.com

Image

By Bryer Wharton

Hyperborean The Spirit of Warfare Abyss Records: One of three records released Tuesday from Abyss Records, it's a massively promising debut from this Swedish melodic black metal act. A far cry from your typical Swedish melodic black metal, precise and potent songwriting not ruled by the standard black metal tremolo riffing. A great sensory assault reminiscent of the innovativeness of Melechesh and Absu.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by http://www.metallian.com

Image

By Ali "The Metallian"

If anyone would like to hear what a ripping underground death metal demo back in 1985 sounded like here is the CD to get. It isn’t an underground release unearthed and issued for the masses. It is not even an older band. Mäax is a younger band with an album and an EP to its name. This disc was recorded in 2009. Yet, the studio so-called surely is no more than four-track console (so 1984) and the music sounds so badly produced one wonders how deliberate it all is. Could it be tongue-in-cheek? After all, the disc’s title is stupid beyond belief, but the music is so vintage underground, the riffs (that one can hear) so authentic and the band’s image so punkish early death that one can only admire the end-result. The fast riffing on Bastards is the best since Destructor circa 1986! Fans of Necrophagia circa 1985 need this now!

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) "Nihil" CD EP review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By devilmetal747

Noctis Imperium are a black metal band from Venezeula who offer fans their third EP, 'Nihil.' Thankfully, the name doesn't reflect the music as raw, dismal and dissonant black metal. Noctis are actually very creative while dismal and raw at the same time. The album begins with the brief ambiant "Ra-hoor-khuit" before delving into "Descensus ad inferos." It is pretty typical black metal full of tremolo pickings and evil shriekings, with bits of catchy rhythms. It is the drums on this EP that really grab the listener's attention- they are furious but also very clean, and there is a reason for this. Nick Barker of Dimmu Borgir fame amongst other bands is the drummer-for-hire on this and his work is perfect for the band; hopefully they'll keep him as a steady drummer. Just listen to his work near the end on "Maze Of Torment;" one cannot sound much clearer and ferocious than that. The guitars are also interesting the way they are used in their sliding techniques to create almost an industrial feel to the music, but it is miniscule.
"Bring Me Sacrifice" is a highly energized track, but also the most generic, save for the guitar solo. Thankfully there's "Unus In Nihil" where things slow down a bit and the guitars offer some depressive melodic bits, amongst layered vocals, before going for an ambient outro similar to how the album began, but much more symphonic despite the hissing distortion. The last two tracks featured are live ones. The first is from an earlier EP and features some great quality sound. The guitars sound crisp and the only thing that would really give it away is the way the vocals echo, like they're in a closed concrete room. The other track is a live version of "Maze Of Torment" and has a much more 'live' feel due to the faded sound of the instruments altogether. Sadly, the song feels more rushed than the original, but the drums still sound like perhaps Barker is behind the kit. Plus the interaction with the crowd is always a sure sign.
Considering three great EPs, it is a wonder this band hasn't gotten their full length out. They're certainly seasoned enough and have Abyss records under their belt. Sadly if they lose Nick Barker they may go downhill in sound, but between the vocals and guitars, Noctis have a great rap going for them. Definitely evil and powerful without being too raw and typical, along the lines of 1349 and Emperor (minus the keyboards).

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

Long heralded as potential successors to the Swedish thrones left abandoned by At the Gates and Dissection, Diabolical have been steadily and readily improving themselves over the course of the last 15 years, passable efforts like Synergy and A Thousand Deaths breeding inspiration for the superior, strangely unsung 2008 opus The Gallery of Bleeding Art. Melodic death with character, composition and variation. Ars Vitae is not quite the anticipated full-length successor to that album, but instead a substantial fan package. Seeking to avoid a similar gulf as that which separated the releases of their 2nd and 3rd onslaughts, the Swedes have assembled some new studio material, a live set and their rare Deserts of Desolation EP (from 2000) to whet the appetites of a no doubt eager audience.

First at bat, the most anticipated portion: the new songs. There are three here, inaugurated with a moody, brief atmospheric intro ("Ortus"). "Sightless 6" is nearly seven minutes in length, but it handles its bulk extremely well, an opening salvo of arching, powerful mystique fording into the more subtle textures of its depths. In particular I enjoyed the somber ambiance created over the melodies around 2:00, but from that point on its a study in contrasts. "Infvitabile Fatvm" follows with a similar appreciation for ethereal beauty, a 3 minute instrumental with clean guitars and lush, droning synthesizers that predicates the driving "Eye". You'll notice at once that this trial material is a slightly different direction than The Gallery of Bleeding Art, less intense perhaps, but far more modern and atmospheric. If you enjoy Sverker Widgren's performance in the amazing Demonical, then you'll find his growling presence here a curious change of pace.

The live cuts span all three of the band's full-lengths, though admittedly The Gallery tracks dominate in quality: "Extinction", "Vertigo", "The One Who Bleeds" and "The Gallery of Bleeding Art" itself. From A Thousand Deaths (2002) they've incorporated "Children of the Mushroom Cloud" and "Under My Skin", and Synergy (2001) is represented through "Suicidal Glory" and "Ashes II". All of these tracks sound clear, consistent, and tautly executed, but if there is one possible drawback to their inclusion here, it's that a track like "The Gallery..." is simply so much more explosive that what the band seem to be writing now. To place it back to back with the more illicit, ambient futurism of the studio material seems akin to shooting oneself in the proverbial foot, but hopefully fans can look beyond this and appreciate the differences.

As for the Deserts of Desolation EP, it's pretty rough. The band's compositional talent was set in place even this early in their career, but the production is shoddy, particularly the fuzzed out guitars. The vocals feel more like a snarled caricature of their later representation, but there are clearly some excellent riffs being carved through "Guidance of Sin" and "Deserts", perhaps less so in the more progressive course of "The Dreaming Dead". All told, this is the least entertaining sequence on the disc, but for most of the band's fans, who likely don't have a legitimate physical copy of the Y2K-spawned EP itself, it's a chance for completion (though the Synergy version of "Guidance of Sin" is superior to this one).

Ultimately, Ars Vitae is intended for the band's established audience, but it certainly has a broader appeal for fans of melodic, introspective death metal. It's a good companion piece for The Gallery of Bleeding Art, but if this is your first exposure, head straight for that. As a compilation, this offers a window to where the band is going, and a glimpse of where they've been, without resorting to redundant studio tracks from the three prior full-lengths. Sure, they might have tacked on an additional demo or two, but as it stands, this rounds out a considerable 70 minutes of content. The live material is potent and elegant and the new tracks show a lot of promise. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer for more word from that front.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.metal-observer.com

Image

By Ailo

In a time when Doom Metal is at its highest point of popularity ever, a storm of re-issued classics is sure to follow. While not quite reaching the status of legends, Minneapolis three-piece THE GATES OF SLUMBER have been crushing skulls since 1998, years ahead of the renaissance of Doom. Their first full-length "The Awakening" was unleashed upon the world in 2004, and proudly carries the banner of Traditional Doom. This newly issued version features artwork by Ken Kelly (known from Manowar's ultra-masculine covers), and the bonus track "The Cloaked Figure" from their 2004 demo of the same name.

For the uninitiated, THE GATES OF SLUMBER have made a name for themselves through offering extensive tribute at the temple of SAINT VITUS, while imbuing their axes with a hefty dose of MANILLA ROAD-style Heavy Metal. The trifecta is completed by an affinity for Robert E. Howard's fantasy epics, forming a strong brew of heaviness served in a grimly repurposed skull. The band's love for the low-fantasy chronicles of Conan serves the music well as a general theme, grounding the dark epic sound which never descends into anything overtly cheesy.

The main drawback of "The Awakening" comes with the segments of pure VITUS-worship. These crawling bleak moments serve only as a platform from which huge riffs can evolve, and bring little to the table when left to simmer for a while. However, when the riffs and solos explode, the results are often neckbreaking. Songs like "The Jury" and "The Executioner" are the musical equivalent of a battleaxe in the gut, and a celebration of all things heavy. At times the vocals fail to live up to the pounding melodies, and a generally rough-around-the-edges sound bear witness to a band that are still finding their stride. On that note, it's worth noting that many of these songs are repurposed from earlier demos, stretching as far back as 2000.

In retrospect, THE GATES OF SLUMBER have proven to be one of the most stalwart purveyors of Traditional Doom Metal, and "The Awakening" testaments that their path has not strayed. While not as immediately captivating and refined as their 2009 masterpiece "Hymns Of Blood And Thunder", their debut is still worth its salt in grimy crawls and triumphant gallops. This re-issue is definitely worth picking up for anyone who missed the album the first time around.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.truemetal.it

Image

By Chiara Rizzatti

From Sweden comes "Apollonian Eyes" , the band's latest effort death Septekh , so that makes up his fourth EP: to be an emerging ensemble seems to have consolidated a certain habit when choosing this type of format, which began in 2009. Surely Septekh attempt to test the waters before you carry out an album, but the impression is that of a reluctance to nell'affacciarsi metal scene perhaps excessive. Meanwhile give birth "Apollonian Eyes" EP containing four tracks for a total a little more than fifteen minutes. At first sight it seems to be a positive premise, when taking into account previous work that could count on a greater number of tracks and apparently even greater dose of inspiration. Preliminary considerations of this kind are literally swept away by the title track , which opens the disc with a sound full of pure violence, which are the masters anguished rhythms and scratchy guitar riffs. The scenery is complemented by the vocals of Nils Meseke, a growl that's more like a piercing scream, but that is a perfect place in the context in which it is located. Even the last track, "Vlad Tepes" , deserves some attention: certainly does not reach the levels of brutality that characterize "Apollonian Eyes" , but is distinguished by an effective growing more and more aggressive, however much it shines a little originality. However, this more disappointing is the central part of the EP, which has no great merit than to be surrounded by "Apollonian Eyes" and "Vlad Tepes" . A smart choice by Septekh that seems to aim to open and conclude the work in the best way to undo the success of anything but memorable of the remaining tracks. "Burn It To The Ground" and "Cursing The Skies" does not involve, tend to be trivially repetitive and devoid of the momentum that would be expected, and whose Septekh have proven to be capable, although so obviously discontinuous. "Apollonian Eyes", however, is a total EP enjoyable, that reveals several cues interesting and also highlights some improvement compared to the previous works. At this point for the Scandinavian band continue to fossilize on the mini could be counterproductive, since the potential to end a good first album and finally express the most of their actual artistic quality does not seem to miss.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by Brutiful Metal Radio

Image

By Paul D. Jackson

Dead Awaken hailing from the frigid wasteland of Sweden, the frozen oasis of hatred, offer up another apocalyptic march chocked full of brutal breakdowns and blast beats.

Dead Awaken wastes no time with the blistering opening riff of "Carnivore", a crushing effort from this Swedish bands' groove laden crunch fest with drum fills that sound like tanks raining down in a monsoon of hatred. The whirlwind guitars are textbook death metal riffs, nothing fancy, no nerdy technical arpeggios just solid riffage. This band is the meat and potatoes of killer Death Metal you've been dying for.

Deutsches Afrika Corpse starts out with a solid frenzy of mish mash time changes and even lower guttural growls than that of Corpsegrinder himself. Jorgen Kristiansen's vocals although brutal, are rife with a terse melody that couples well in a sanitized harmony with the black metal-esque fury of the single string attack of the guitars. It's hard to capture growls that are clean but the production really brings the madness together tighter than human skin lampshade, out front vocals and dirty bass fills with consistent atomic clock timed double bass kicks engorge your most basic barbaric instincts.

Venom of the Population is a bit choppy with eight bar starts and stops it's hard to get the hate train accelerating but after the first chorus, total bludgeoning begins with an aural assault on your eardrums. The kind of timing that makes you instantly fist bang inanimate objects, a little more wizardry with the mid tempo guitar solo slowly working its way up winding back and forth to bring you back into to the fold of manic time changes. Vox aren't as crisp as Duetsches or Carnivore but it does the job conveying a state of a misanthropic myopic view of the current state of affairs.

State of corrosion shows impressive drumming once again making tactical use of cymbals in innovative ways. State of Corrosion is like watching an unfolding terrorist act on live television, slack jawed and numb, it grabs your balls and won't let go. Although the chorus "State of Corrosion, State of Corrosion" is a bit digitized mid-song, they really bring it down to a sludgy crunch at the end, akin to a schizophrenic banging his head straight through a concrete wall, they save you with another fast and hard attack ride all the way home.

While "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" is nothing to write home about, it's something to enjoy for yourself, a gem of a personal, self loathing introspective, a vending machine of social feeling and discernment. You almost want to keep this one in the archives for yourself, to be the one of the few and proud in the know, jamming whether you're in the gym, disturbing the neighbors or driving the motorway with seething hatred for your fellow man. Do everyone a favor and pick this up and spread the word.

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by http://www.blackmetalreviews.com

Image

By Black Metal Reviews

One thing that’s clearly working against Norwegian Black Metal duo Hat is the name. It may mean hate in their native tongue but here in the English-speaking world hat will always and forever be the yoke you use to keep your head warm. Or to be a cool fuck. Either way, Hat isn’t a great name for a Black Metal band. Or any band, for that matter. Pity about the unfortunate handle as I really enjoy their music.

Debut ‘The Demise Of Mankind’ surfaced in 2009 and is highly impressive; this second full-length followed in 2011 and is also pretty damn fine. ‘Vortex Of Death’ delivers circa 45 minutes of well-thought-out, modern-sounding, sinister BM with a truly stellar sound and an organic feel. Right now, I’m struggling for superlatives (a combination of writer’s block and retardedness) so I’ll simply tell you that I’ve listened to this album countless times since purchasing it and, truth to tell, ‘Vortex Of Death’ never bores me.

Arguably one of Norway’s best-kept secrets, Hat may have a shite name but if you can get past that admittedly-significant stumbling block (first impressions, cognitive imagery and all that…) there’s a treasure trove of quality music to be found on both their albums. And last time I checked Abyss were practically giving this sumptuous digi CD away!

FESTER (Norway) "Silence" DIGI CD review by http://www.minacious.org

Image

By Mordant

This is the second full-length from Fester, originally released in 1994, here we encounter a more mature Fester which have gotten rid of some of their rawer features and replaced them with a more melodic sensibility. Which doesn’t have to be a bad thing, quite the contrary since this is a really fucking great album. They have moved away from some of their Black Metal tendencies and moved much more towards Death Metal and Doom/Death Metal, yet at times there is an almost Heavy Metal feel to the music. What makes this so great is the combination the steady and heavy drumming, the raw, heavy and melodic riffing and the vocals which are very sick, whispered screams almost, very strange and very good. Get this album.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernández

Undoubtedly, this quintet from Indiana knows how well the ears hammered with this ep seems to have come from the very underworld and causes the listener a whole flood of feelings in order to move his head and ripped enjoy that voice and those rapid rhythms that make us crazy at times. The production is nasty how could it be otherwise with the spotlight focused on the guitar while the bass and drums do not hear too (bass nothing).

In short, MAAX recreated some songs ideal for a good while and for those we like the garage rock 'n' Roll more pork, and children enjoy this "Six Pack Witchcraft".

Rating: 9/10

ANGIST (Iceland) Interview by http://www.metallized.it

Image

By Elena Aren "Akaah"

They have the skill and talent to spare, an original style and the desire to carry out its project in music. But above all, what distinguishes the Angist and in particular its two leaders Edda and Gyda is the great frankness: do not seek easy consensus as women, do not play death metal only joking ...

Akaah : Today we have a guest the Icelandic death metal band Angist almost complete, with the frontman and guitarist Edda Tegeder , the other guitarist, Gyda Thorvaldsdóttir and bassist Haraldur Ingi Shoshan . Welcome to Metallized! First of all, as the Icelandic festival Eistnaflug is one of the milestones of your tour with the band Faroese Earth Divide , what are your impressions of FERDIN til Heljar 2013 tour (tour that annually includes a band Faroese and Icelandic, with stops in both nations, Ed)?

Gyda : So far it's been great, fantastic, really interesting, the boys of the other band, the Earth Divide, they are really funny ...

Edda : We were really lucky to be chosen for this tour with them ...

Gyda : In fact it is the staff of G ! Festival every year chooses two groups, one Icelandic and Faroese one, for this tour, so one can be found to spend two whole weeks of touring with a band of strangers ... we were really lucky to have met them. So far it has been wonderful, we had a great ...

Haraldur : And we can not wait to go to the Faroe Islands!

Akaah : Another particular news story was that of the republication of one of your early work, the EP Circle Of Suffering , in a new edition, enriched and, above all, in the box. What are the reasons that led you to make this choice unusual?

Gyda : It was a rather random thing, there was a person in Malaysia, owner of a distro (the Narrowards Kult , Ed) who contacted us to propose a deal. He wanted to publish our work but it is very expensive to ship CDs from Iceland, not to mention that, due to customs fees, we would have had to pay extra when there would have been sent copies. So we have been obliged to decline the offer, given that we only wasted money. He told us that though he wanted to publish it anyway, but in boxes, and we accepted. Given the long lead times of shipping from Malaysia, we have not yet received our copies personally, but the work was carried out in a truly professional.

Edda : This release also includes the songs in our first demo and is the first to include the published in the EP and in the demo.

Gyda : We're really pleased, although it was a rather random thing, the guy was really professional and was passionately devoted to this work, it was great.

Akaah : From the past to the future: you have announced that you want to release an album later this year. How are the recordings? Do you have any anticipation to do about it?

Edda : We have clearly already started working on this album and writing songs and hope to publish it soon ...

Gyda : This depends mainly on our label, we pianificavamo long before you start recording, because we are all workers or students who do not have much free time, but we could not do much last winter and now we're on tour. We hope to continue recording in September and October, then we'll see what the label says. We hope that the process will be pretty quick.

Akaah : Speaking of labels, have recently signed a record deal with the U.S. label Abyss Records : are you satisfied with this new collaboration?

Gyda : So far, we are satisfied. Ferguson Daniel , the owner of the label, someone like us, has given birth to this small label is continuing to develop and treats with great respect its artists, so we're happy. In addition, personally he followed us from the beginning, we had contacted immediately as soon as we published our first two songs on Myspace and even then we discussed in our music. I do not know if you let us sign a contract was already in his mind then, but when we started looking for a label, he became affected and we closed the deal. So far everything went well, because this professional environment and full of dedication for music is exactly what we needed.

Akaah : The time comes for a rather obvious question: how does it feel, to be the female leader of a death metal band? How did you find inside the Icelandic scene? Have you ever had to deal with the problems?

Edda : There were difficult moments, but in general people support us ...

Gyda : We do not see ourselves as' oh yes, we are women who make metal ", we have this idea of ourselves ... ah, I can not really ever how to answer a question like this! (Laughs, Ed.) We're just two girls in a band, we have fun and it's nice to have someone else to talk to, spend time, make-up and stuff like that ...

Edda : We still have other experiences prior to this in the Icelandic metal scene, then the situation has been consolidated.

Haraldur : Sometimes there is a problem, but never anything too high or too worrying.

Gyda : There are people who come to our band because it happened to two women, but also others who do not even listen our music because we are there. We only promote as a band in the feminine, and when we make music with our experience we can entice some other girl to come closer to this world, we are happy.

Edda : Personally, I'd really like to see more women involved in the metal scene and rock Icelandic!

Gyda : Then there is always to remember that everyone has the freedom to think what they think. We make our music and we are interested in relatively little of those who do not appreciate us, we go forward!

Akaah : The style that is presented very convincing, powerful and old school. How, therefore, does a song by Angist ?

Gyda : I Edda and we meet often in a living room, which is more or less the headquarters of the band and we try, we discuss new ideas, arrange new materials. When we try, the whole band is making its contribution and the process develops rather quickly.

Edda : Usually we do neither we rely on particular plans ...

Gyda : In fact, in most cases we have a basic idea, but not a project that we must follow to the letter. We do what we feel we can do, we follow what is in our minds and let us be ourselves. We have songs that we changed the main riff at least four times, then you know how difficult we set the stakes of aspects that, once chosen, can not be altered. All too often we change only after lightning had an idea ...

Edda : Especially after having played live, often on stage there are so many new ideas!

Akaah : In addition to your unique style, the feature that immediately jumps to the ears of anyone who will listen, even for the first time, is the aggressive and powerful voice of Edda . What kind of path you have followed and training, to be able to achieve such a level and vocal style?

Edda : I think it must first take care of your voice and learn the right technique, especially in the case where there are 2:00 to 3:00 show one after the other. I found a teacher who taught me a lot, both with regard to the use of voice that the techniques to warm up before a performance and has been instrumental. I, then, I also have experience in singing in clean, which I did not help, but the base is always the exercise for me, and done so in a consistent manner.

Akaah : After many years in which you found yourself struggling with several changes of line-up on drums and the difficulties resulting from them, as you are now working with Tumi Gíslason , your present, and finally fixed, drummer?

Gyda : The main problem of our first drummer was that he was a member of three or four groups at the same time ... is a typical problem in Iceland, we have so many good drummers, but almost all are engaged at the same time in many different projects music. So he stayed with us for a few months, not even for the time of our first recordings. With the second things do not just work, we never found the right harmony. We are fortunate now to have Tumi , a person is really passionate about his work, is professional and is well in our small group ...

Edda : In our small family ... sort

Gyda : It has taken us to another level, we can not deny it. He, along with us, he made ??a tour in France as a session and on our return to Iceland immediately became an official member of the group. It is very creative and is just what we needed because, during our concerts, we always wanted to try to convey something, to give our best and with him we succeed, we can trust him, and not worry about anything. It has definitely changed the band.

Akaah : What are, to this day, your plans for the future? Are planning something for the post release of the album such as, for example, a tour?

Gyda : Going on tour would be our dream

Edda : Yes, we really hope to be able to organize some dates in Europe

Gyda : After releasing the album, we hope to organize a concert, so far we have been on tour in France, last April we stayed at Desertfest in England and now will play the Faroe Islands ... but it would be really nice to meet new people, play for new and different audiences. In Iceland, the public must always be drunk to really enjoy themselves, while in other countries it is not so, people come early and still have fun without drinking, so we have fun too. So we really hope, both in terms of participation in festivals for a European tour. We will probably make more accurate plans after releasing the album.

Akaah : Our interview now comes to an end. Want to add something?

Gyda : Thank you for the attention you've wanted to spend and I urge everyone to listen to our music and know each other better, hoping to one day play in Italy!

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://totgehoert.blogspot.de

Image

By Nico

Wow, I delivered my first thought EP for Rezi Totgehört at times but my skin directly from the socks. SEPTEKH offer on their EP " Apollonian Eyes "four songs in the intersection between thrash and mangy Death'n'Roll for tasting.

What is heard is fresh and distinctive, even when times every now and then to old references feats of THE CROWN shine through. The band manages to make the songs so that every now and again are great moments of surprise. An example is the song called 'Vlad Tepes'. After a bold reefs determined initial to increase the song and leads into a melodic chorus that not soon get out of your head and the worn chorus line "Now I just want you to know Vlad Tepes was my bitch" is cool again.
" The Wicked "is the right word when it comes to artwork and stage outfit. Men see the musicians with their Zwirbelbärten and suits, as if they had sprung from a different era. All in all an interesting band from which you will hear more in the future.

For fans of old THE CROWN publications or thrash GOD DETHRONED exploits highly recommended. One can only hope that the gentlemen can keep the level about music distance.
disc Horny!

Since the first of April is "Apollonian Eyes" on Abyss Records to relate.

DIE HARD (Sweden) "Evil Always Return" CD EP review by Blackened Death Metal Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Die Hard are a band from Sweden that mixes thrash, death and black metal and this is a review of their 2008 e.p "Evil Always Return' which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums are very fast and brutal with alot of blast beats, while the bass playing is very fast and primal with riffs that follow the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are very fast with alot of brual death/thrash riffs that contain a small amount of a black metal influence, with some very fast guitar leads and solos being thrown in.

Vocals are mostly death/thrash style grunts with some deep death metal growls, while the lyrics cover Satanism, death, and hate, as for the production it sounds very heavy and primal with all of the instruments coming out with a brutal sound.

In my opinion Die Hard are a very good band that any true fan 0f death/black/thrash should enjoy and they bring back alot of memories of the death and black metal bands of the 80's. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Black Mass" and "The Weak Lead The Blind". RECOMMENDED BUY.

WAN (Sweden) "Wolves of the North" CD review by http://www.apochs.net

By apochs

Wan is a band that pretty much came out of nowhere, but wasn't really one that was too deep in obscurity. This Swedish Black Metal act formed in 2009, and within the rear bring us their debut full-lengt album, Woles of the North. While this is a simpler interpretation of earlier second wave Black Metal and draws insppiration from many established acts, the music here varies between ambitious and full of promise, as well as amateurish and comes off as filler. However, there's still a good amount of solid song writing for the Black Metal fan who just wants to kick back with an album that you don't truly have to lose yourself in to enjoy.

The material that Wan presents on Wolves of the North really isn't anything all that new, or even all that impressive. However, what it lacks sorely in originallity, the band makes up for in solid recordings. The production on this release is rather on the raw side, but in a much more positive way then some of the less higher end recording qualities that Black Metal acts have been churning out. In fact, this works very well to capture the essence of the album, focusing on a rather heavy, downtuned sound with a strong presence from the bass, all working well with the more gutteral vocal presentation of the release then your generic higher rhaspier wail. The drums on this release sound really full, and in the end the album manages too pull a great deal of influence from such acts as Hellhammer, but still manage to keep a somewhat different approach to the music. This atmosphere works out fantastic for the start of the album and really works out well to create a dark and cold sounding band that clearly just went into this to write heavy, driving Black Metal the way they want, and for the most part it really makes some enjoyable material. However, when you hit the song "Kingdom of Wan", things start to get a bit side tracked.

The first three songs on Wolves of the North are hard hitting, accessible, and simple Black Metal for fans who just want to listen to some solid music without overproduction, or extreme underproduction, hidden references, etc., and give off a musical presence that goes perfectly with the cheesy, amateurish artwork that one would expect to see on early second wave Black Metal albums on more underground labels, such as the artwork on earlier Belmez albus, or even hand drawn cover art for earlier Thrash recordings. Either way, the momentum of the album really shifts at "Kingdom of Wan" due to the sudden snap in musical approach and recording quality. This song, and many that follow, shift to a mudch higher pitched quality instead of having a deeper sound that you were introduced to. Even the vocals hop onto the generic train for no reason and go from gutteral to mainly wailing, plus the audio levels just don't quite sync up either when jumping from "Död Kroistem Man" and into "Kingdom of Wan". On top of this, the material goes from just being solid, to often solidly borng and stereotypical with the following track "Wargoat", which is a song that goes on for over 5 minutes, the longest track on here that shows some severe second wave worship such as with bands like slower paced Darkthrone, especially as you round the home stretch of the song and it just becomes heavily repetitive, and highly redundant. This is also where these shenanigans cut out, but yet continue.

The audio quality does shift back to the deeper, rich style that started the album off after "Wargoat", which is great and really brings the enjoyment level of the album back up to solid, raw but rich recordings once more. The problem is that some of the closing songs just aren't all that great. "Med Stormsteg Mot Doden", for example, is one of the stronger songs to close out the release, and one of the few songs on here that really brings in a Bathory feel to the release. This song is fast, heavy, and stands out not just in the fact of intensity and how enjoyable it comes down to, but also because it kind of conflicts with the rest of the release musically. Even the following "Rapid Satan", the shortes song on here, which clocks in under a minute, is a strong track that will grab the listener's attention by the balls, leaving you only wishing the band had focused on turning this song into a full-length track by another minute and a half at least. This is especially off when you're coming off the slower paced "War of the Unholy" which is just dreadful and actually has guitars that sound like they were performed by an amateur throughout, clashing completely with the rest of the song to make you want to scramble for the skip button.

Wolves of the North isn't the most impressive Black Metal album you'll ever hear, but it's also not one of the worst. Wan present some solid, simple musicianship to create songs that are enjoyable when you don't want to be on your toes with sheer intensity or hidden aspects and just want to kick back to a grim feeling album. Sure it has it's moments throughout that will leave you wondering why the band went the rought they did, such as the sudden jerk of recording quality and compositions through the album, and the amateurish guitar work on "War of the Unholy", but that doesn't make this release a terrible one. If you walk into this album knowing what to experience, which is a decent album that shows some potential from this band, then you'll wind up getting a good aount of replay from it. Just don't go into this expecting the latest Watain album or anything, as you will be sorely displeased and probabloy scorn Wan before allowing them to show you what they bring to the table.
